"I'd rather have you guard the town in my absence. Knowing the ruins' reputation, no humans should come looking for trouble. Savage beasts, however, may very well try to nest here."

The Basara ancestors might have deserted the town, emptying the treasury, but riches or salvageable items like the ones in the raven-head statue waited to be unearthed, left behind either because they hadn't cared much about money or they hadn't dared touch a sacred item.
