2 Chapter 1: Damon

Life from birth had been nothing but hell.

I lost my parents to some stupid aristocrats whom they offended and got executed for no good reason.

My relatives abandoned me and pushed me aside. They feared for their lives, leaving me and my sister to starve while wandering the streets alone!

No, this is worse than hell!

I watched my sister die of starvation...

Her lips were dry, her fits were bloodied, and her nails were broken. With fingers riddled with cuts, she hung on to dear life in my hands and after a few seconds of struggle she passed away.

Watching her face in horror, I realized she seemed joyful in death, so I prayed mine will come soon. Only then can I escape this hell I am living in!

I had no place to go or anyone I could depend on, so I stayed in the alleyway. Alone with her rotting corpse on my laps, waiting for death.

And it came!

I could see the darkness encroaching from all sides, and the world turned silent.

Everyone said death is scary, but I say it's the end. The end to all the struggles, pain and suffering. The end I desired!

Who needs life after death?

What is the need for reincarnation?

Who would want to return to this crazy world?

"It's not yet time for you to go… You have one more task to accomplish." A voice called out to me.

"You will become my host." It said, and an eerie laughter followed.

I could barely see or speak, but how can I miss such a beautiful face?

It was an extremely handsome man with jet black hair, a straight nose, chiseled jawlines and most importantly a pale skin. He gazed at me with tender eyes, a look I have been craving from people since the death of my parents.

"Haven't I suffered enough? Can't I just rest?" I cried out. "Why would I want to stay back in such a cruel world?"

"Don't you want to avenge the death of your parents?" He asked in an alluring voice. "Don't you want to become something greater? I can make that happen!"

"You… Who are you?" I asked with an anxious heart.

His words were enticing, and I knew it was a matter of time before I get swayed.

My parents always said God is the only one who cares about me. Maybe in my final hours, he had come to save me.

"Call me Death…"

Huff!

Damon sat up with a face covered in sweat. He was barely up to twelve years old, with slightly pale skin color and short black hair. Dressed in rags and torn boots, he stained the ground he laid on.

A foul smell snuck into his nostrils, causing him to cover them.

'I know I haven't bathed in a while, but I can't smell that bad' Damon's eyes watered.

At that moment, his memories returned, and he looked down only to see the corpse laying on his chest had gone rotten with crows chewing off it.

Bleegh!

Damon frantically shoved the body aside and threw up. He shot a final glance at the corpse which was already missing an eye, he knew if the city guards found him with the corpse, he would only suffer more.

'I'm sorry' Damon felt tears welling up in him.

He reluctantly stood up and ran through the alley, occasionally looking over his shoulders. Surprisingly, his weak body was full of energy, and he ran faster than ever before!

Damon's vision blurred and all he could see was the exit ahead of him. For some reason, every other thing was blocked out as he dashed out the alleyway, and only then did he stop running.

Huff!

Huff!

Huff!

Damon fell to his knees as he began gasping for air. He felt light-headed and his body seemed weaker than usual.

A strong sense of hunger made his stomach rumble, making him shiver terribly, but then sounds of metal clapping together reached his ears.

Clank!

Clank!

Clank!

Damon looked up only to see street guards racing towards him from the alleyway.

'They must have found the body' Damon paled with fright, but he was too weak to run.

The temporal burst of energy he had was gone just as fast as it came.

{If you wish to die a second time, stay here!} The voice returned.

{Don't you dare forget that your sister's corpse is in there… They must have found it and saw you running, so they assumed you are the killer! Run boy!} the sinister voice erupted in his head.

It wasn't as gentle as the one he listened to in his dream, but it was enough to remind him how dire the situation was.

Damon gathered what was left of the strength he could muster and started running!

At first, he looked sluggish, and it seemed they would catch up to him, but slowly his body became more steady as he began to speed up.

Once again, his vision blurred and all he could see was what was in front of him and nothing else.

Damon ran through the street and into another alleyway in a flash, shocking those on the streets.

"Catch that murderer!" The captain of the guards cried out with his round belly jingling with each step he took.

He stopped moments later, gasping like a dying pig while the other guards ran past him.

Meanwhile, Damon was thrilled!

He moved so fast that it seemed like things slowed down in his eyes. He soon made it out of the alleyway, but from the corner of his eyes he noticed something huge he couldn't ignore.

"Fuck my life" Damon cursed as he saw a horse dragging along a rather fancy carriage behind it.

He lost focus for a moment and tripped.

Bang!

He hit the ground, rolling on the ground severally before finally stopping. He felt pain from all parts of his body, which was now riddled with cuts and bruises

His lips were busted open, and he had an injury on his head which he bled from.

The horse cried out loudly and stopped while guards dressed in fancier armors ran forward with their weapons unsheathed, surrounding the carriage while a few approached the fallen Damon with their weapons pointed at him.

'Another noble? You guys killed my parents and took my sister away from me, now you want to kill me for blocking your path? He-he! This life is so unfair' Damon chuckled bitterly as he noticed the banner on the carriage.

It's not uncommon for a peasant like him to be killed on a daily basis for blocking the path of a noble. But strangely he felt no fear and silently awaited his fate. After experiencing the peace death brought, he was more than happy to end this sad life of his.

With a mocking smile, he gazed at the guards with defiant eyes while silently taking a secret oath.

'If reincarnation does exist!'

'If there is a second, no a third chance at this crappy place called life'

'I will make all of them pay!'

"It's the murder! Kill him!"

The guards chasing after him soon emerged from the alley just to see Damon on the floor and a guard approaching with his weapon raised.

They weren't even eager to find out the circumstances behind her death, they just wanted to pin the blame on him, execute him and end this silly case that wasn't worth their time.
