13 Chapter 13

Don't stay in town for the night.

Was she trying to warn us about the herd outside? They showed up a couple of minutes after we took out the ones after us. They were probably attracted by the gunshots. I gently knocked on the basement door and Ezra quickly opened it.

"They're leaving?" he asked and I nodded before remembering he couldn't see me in the dark.

"Yes."

He turned on his torch and pointed it at the floor. "I'll go grab Jack."

He went down the stairs and I made my way back to the living room. I could still hear the moans of the infected but it sounded far. Daniel was looking out the window and I joined him. There were still some infected in front of the house but they were following the others. Our way out of town was also clear and I was immensely grateful for whatever that had snagged their attention.

Daniel's brows were furrowed and he was frowning as he stared in the direction the infected were headed.

"Where's Roshni?"

I turned around and saw Cassandra and Hae In at the doorway of the living room.

"Where's Roshni?" Cassandra asked again.

I surveyed the living room and stared at Cassandra. "She's not here."

Genius.

"She left the pantry immediately after you did."

"I'll check upstairs," Faye said as she got up and I quickly followed her.

We'd closed all the doors and windows on the first floor after checking for infected in the house so we immediately headed for the door that was open. A quick glance around the room revealed that the only thing here was the metal guitar in the corner. She wasn't here and the window was open. I took quick steps to the window and looked out. She couldn't have left. She actually couldn't because she'd have twisted or broken something by jumping out the window and the herd was just a few houses away.

"Faye," I called out when I realized she was no longer in the room with me. A thud came from the next room and I headed for the door only for it to be slammed shut in my face.

What the hell?

"Faye!" I yelled and covered my mouth with my hands when I heard how loud I was. I could only hope it wasn't loud enough to draw the herd back here.

I placed my ear against it but I didn't hear anything and I tried to open the door. My heart began to thump in my chest when it didn't open. She wouldn't lock me in.

"Faye?" I began to wrench and tug the doorknob as I became more agitated.

"Enny?" came a voice from the other side of the door.

"Yes, yes, I'm here."

"The door is locked." The voice was Debbie's.

"I know. Can you open it? Is Faye there?"

"She's not," she said before the key turned in the lock and I tried to open the door.

It was still locked. "Debbie, open the door."

I knocked on the door when she didn't answer and a muffled sound came from the other side. The hair started to tinge along the back of my neck as blood rushed through my veins, making me lightheaded. Something was wrong.

A knock came from the other side of the door and I took a step back. Another knock. What do I do? What do I do? I didn't know who or what was on the other side of the door but I was sure it was someone that wasn't supposed to be here. No one I know would decide to randomly mess with me like this. Not even Faye.

My eyes darted to the guitar in the corner and I immediately went to grab it. The edge looked sharp enough to cut steel and I hoped that it could actually do that.

The unmistakable sound of glass shattering came from downstairs and after a few beats of silence, gunshots filled the air.

Holy shit!

I yelped when a sudden bang came from the other side followed by some muffled words and heavy footsteps. The door suddenly swung open and I raised the guitar up, ready to swing it, when I saw Faye.

I lowered the guitar to the ground. "Oh, than-"

"Dude, run!"

"Huh?" she had already gone. "Wait!"

I ran out of the room and almost tripped on something on the ground. Debbie. Her eyes were wide open and her neck was bent at an unnatural angle.

Oh my God.

Air flew from my lungs and I couldn't breathe. I hold my hands out, wanting to touch her, wanting to check if she's still alive. But it's obvious, she's not. Fear tortures my guts, churning my stomach in tense cramps. I hear voices behind me and I turn around to see a man and a woman struggling with each other. It was the infected lady.

"Enny!" someone yelled from downstairs just as the man kicked the lady into a room and turned to face me.

He was also an infected.

I turned around and ran down the hallway, past Debbie's body, towards the stairs. I was fairly certain I was going to eat shit on the floor if I didn't slow down as I rushed down the stairs. Someone abruptly ran past me as I got to the ground floor. I tried to avoid the person and ended up falling to the ground. I wasted no time in getting to my feet when I realized that the door was wide open and infected were stumbling in.

Shit.

The smell of rot permeated the air, making me nauseous. I couldn't see my cleaver but Clareta's trench hawk was propped against the wall on the other side of the room and I ran towards it, dodging multiple hands that tried to grab me. I instantly swung it at the head of the infected closest to me after grabbing the handle. He looked like some kind of horrific burn victim and his jaw, which was open too wide, displayed a set of rotting yellow teeth.

I kept swinging but as I took one infected down, another took its place. The moans became louder and the dragging of limbs became harder to ignore. I was cornered and absolutely fucked.
