17 Rescue (final)

""Shit"" the three cursed.

The zombies at the school were small due to them being young, but after this... Evolution? They had not only grown taller but were also growing in muscles. But from the looks of it, not all of them buffed up. Some of the zombies had leaner physique which made it pretty obvious what advantage they would have over the more built ones.

It was plain to see that the leaner zombies were going to be faster and more agile than the ones who were built like body builders. Johnathan sighed, hoping that the leaner zombies weren't too fast, but only time would tell. But he doubted that he wouldn't have to fight at least one anytime soon.

After the quick peek, the three hid behind the portable once more. This time however, one of the newly mutated zombies started walking towards the portable. Once it got close enough, it saw the three teens. Acting on its instincts, the zombie made its move.

"What shou-"

Ivan was quickly caught of guard when they saw a buffed up zombie running towards them at a fast pace. Johnathan was confused at how it found them. From what he experienced zombies were stationary or had simple movements. They would never check corners, and don't even mention them running at them as fast as this one was.

"Shit, run"

Getting flustered at how fast the zombie was running towards them, Danny couldn't think about attacking it. Frightened, the three followed started running towards the short cut. Since the zombie was coming form the opposite side of were they wanted to go, without thinking they ran towards their wanted destination.

As they stepped into view of the other zombies, they quickly turned their heads towards the boys. With grazed looks on their faces, they started bolting towards them. The leaner zombies, as Johnathan predicted, were faster than the bulkier ones.

"Shit, don't look behind you guys, keep running towards the garbage container"

Johnathan quickly warned them, as when he checked behind them, the leaner zombies were closing in. While they were running towards the large garbage container, Johnathan couldn't help but wonder how these zombies were so fast. The three of them had eaten at least four crystals, which had increased their strength by a good amount.

Shaking his head, they continued to run forwards a couple more meters before turning right and running twenty more meters straight. Reaching the front of the school they noticed even more zombies looking at them, but now that they reached the garbage container, they had a way to escape.

Quickly jumping on top of the container, Johnathan bent his knees and jumped up to the small roof a few meters in front of him. However, he was unable to fully make the jump, making him need to pull himself up. But once he got on top he sat down and sighed, while watching the other two do the same.

Once all three of them were on the small roof, they sighed of relief, while watching the hundreds of zombies standing still, watching them with bloodshot eyes. Johnathan looking at the sight, shook a bit. It was frightening to say the least. Imagine hundreds of zombies staring at you as if you were a five star meal.

"Lets go before they find a way up. We're still not on the main roof yet, and your brother still needs help"

Danny's words made Johnathan snap out of his thoughts and look away from the zombies. Sighing once again, Johnathan nodded.

"You're right. But before we do anything, lets make sure to not overestimate ourselves and underestimate these zombies again. If we were any slower, I doubt we would've gotten away without having to fight them"

The other two nodded at Johnathan and agreed with him. With their newfound power and how weak they found the zombies, they thought everything would be a breeze. Not only were the other zombies slower physically than the new and evolved ones but were also mentally slower. The new and improved zombies weren't as dumb as the ones before.

The zombies also acted like a living being instead of a doll that only knew how to move forwards.( can I even say living? They're dead!)

After agreeing to not underestimate the zombies again, Johnathan bent his knees and jumped upwards. This time, he didn't have hundreds of zombies chasing after him, so he easily got on the main roof.

The others did the same, and once they got on the roof, they walked around the little wall that had the door leading into the school. Johnathan's worry decreased and with a smile on his face

Johnathan's worry decreased and with a smile on his face, he walked around the wall. Once he got around it Johnathan's eyes widened at the scene.

No one was there. Not one person was on the roof.

He looked around and only saw that his brothers bag was on the floor. Not only his but two others'. Anger and worry rushed up as Johnathan suddenly vomited out his lunch. Walking towards the wall with tears on his face he punched it with all his strength.

The two watching the scene could only look at their best friend having a break down. But they quickly widened their eyes when Johnathan broke a large piece of the brick wall. However, they didn't bring it up and let him express his emotions.

'Why. Why isn't he here. Did that idiot leave with other kids? Is he, i-is he dead? Please no! WHY THE FUCK IS THIS HAPPENING! IF HE'S DEAD I HAVE NO ONE ELSE. MY MOMS PRBABLY DEAD, MY DADS ALSO PROBABLY DEAD. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT GOD! WHY THE FUCK IS THIS eve APOCAYLPSE HAPPENING'

Johnathan dropped to the ground and started pounding on the floor as tears and snot rushed down his face. He couldn't help but blame this on God. He knew that this couldn't be a virus. How the fuck would they get superpowers and hear fucking trumpets in the skies.

During the whole day he had one goal in mind. That was to save his little brother. He even pushed aside the fact that his mom didn't pick up the phone for his brother, which probably meant she was dead. He didn't even want to start on his dad. His whole world turned upside down, with the only plus being powers. But why would he want top stop time and survive, if he had no family left?

He had his friends, yeah. But they weren't anywhere as important to him than his parents and his brother. During the whole time, he only imagined how excited his brother would be to have a superpower, but that pipe dream was crushed.

Deep down he understood that his parents and brother had a high chance of dying, but he wanted to hold onto that shred of hope with all he had.

Alas, reality hit him hard. Though there was a chance his brother was still alive, Johnathan couldn't help but let it go. He was hopeful through his entire journey, but reality was something different than he wanted it to be. So with that in mind, he got up from the floor and wiped his tears.

"Lets leave"

With a horse tone, Johnathan spoke.

Hearing him, his two closest friends couldn't help but take him into a hug. They knew how much stress Johnathan was probably going through. Even they themselves felt it, but they still haven't confirmed if their family was dead or not. They held onto their hope, while having to watch their good friend loser his.

The tears Johnathan forcefully stopped, started flowing again. He let out quiet sobs as he thought about all the times he was rude towards his family members. He thought about all the laughs they had together and fun memories they made.

'I cant die! They would want me to survive this shit hole and live a good life. Mom, dad, little bro, I love you and I'm so sorry I didn't come here sooner'

_______________

AN: The only reason, the three ran away in the start was because they got scared. This whole time the zombies were slow so when the buffed up zombies ran at them pretty fast, they froze and ran away despite knowing they would be stronger and faster than the previous ones.

- This whole arc's goal was a failure but it did give some things to the three. Strength and experience is something that they would need for the future so this journey wasn't too fruitless

- Look forwards to the future. This is the beginning and the story will only pick up from here
