Chapter 12 - Danger On The Road

The school buses were parked outside. We looked for survivors inside the buses but there were none. We could not find any living creature in close proximity to the school.

So without waiting any longer we made our way toward the mall.

The road didn't look anything like it did before. Overgrown vegetation was starting to cover everything. It was as if the place was left abandoned for decades. If we were not too familiar with the path then getting lost was for sure, everywhere I looked was green. It was as if we were teleported to the Amazon Rainforest.

It was not an easy journey, in some situations I had to chop down some trees and grass with my axe to make way. Finally, after around 40 minutes of struggle, we reached the highway. The mall was not too far from the highway.

The highway was clustered with crashed cars. I could see blood and corpses, but the damage on their body didn't look like it was done by a goblin. The bodies had deep claw marks. There were even a few claw marks on the hoods of a few cars. Whatever did this was able to rip through the metal hood of the cars.

By my estimate, their strength was not close to that of the hobgoblin but it was far more than a level 1 forest goblin. I was not really worried about it because of my high vitality and defense. But if it was a fast monster, then it could be trouble defending myself and protecting Walter and Lily at the same time.

I told both Walter and Lily to take a defensive stance and to take every step with caution. I was at the front, whereas Lily and Walter were guarding my left and right.

Making sure to not break the formation we started to cross the highway slowly.

We were only halfway through the highway when I saw a person running our way. The thing chasing him was a sabretooth-looking creature but it had red fur. The red color of its fur gave it an uncanny majestic look. The closer it got the bigger it looked. It was the size of a fully-grown cow. Paws as big as a person's thigh.

The sheer amount of power it could produce, with a ginormous body that could snap a person's body in half. My heart started to pump faster… it was as if my body was aching for another fight. But when I saw Walter and Lily trying their best to maintain their composure and defend my blind spots, I decided not to fight and ran away for it.

We ran for around 2 minutes and thought we made enough distance between us and the monster but when I turned back to look, I saw the person following us. I was not sure if it was a coincidence or if he was trying to lead the monster toward us but the sabretooth-looking creature was getting close.

Although I didn't have much agility, I was still much better than an average human. So I picked Walter and Lily with both my hands and ran as fast as I could. After running for a few minutes I found a three-story building, I rushed straight into it and put down Walter and Lily. They were not really super thrilled about being carried like a sack.

We did a quick check of the building for any lurking dangers. The inside of the building was safe but when I looked outside the window, the stupid person was getting close to our location with the sabretooth at his tail.

Since the building seemed safe enough, I asked Lily and Walter to remain inside till I go and deal with the sabretooth.

Without waiting any longer I jumped down from the 2nd floor and rushed towards the sabretooth's direction, they were still not close to the building yet.

The place we were at right now was filled with buildings and stores, it was the market area before but now it was abandoned and was surrounded by long grass and overgrown vines on building walls.

There were a bunch of abandoned cars on the streets. I picked up a small sedan with every ounce of strength in my body and threw it towards the sabretooth, which was still a little far away from me.

My plan was to kill the stupid person who was being chased by the monster and the monster at once, or at least severely injure them.

The car went flying toward the person who was chased by the sabretooth. He did a forward roll and somehow survived being crushed by the car by an inch, the sabretooth even was more nimble, it jumped and evaded the vehicle easily.

I walked close to the unknown person who was laying flat on the ground panting.

Identification gave me information about the person and the sabretooth. To my surprise, the person was level 3, which explains how he was able to run away from the sabretooth for so long.

I went to him and picked him by his neck. The guy looked like he was in his mid-20s, lean frame, and was about 5.7 feet(173cm) tall.

"So why are you following us? Speak up or I throw you to that cat over there!"

Tim: "Please don't kill me! Please…."

While the guy was talking, the sabretooth jumped at us. The sabretooth's claw came straight down at us. I jumped backward but the claw still grazed my chest a little.

I was underestimating the sharpness of his claw, although the guy might not be as powerful as the hobgoblin, but it having giant claws and fangs made it a killing machine.

Although with my high physical stats, it might not be able to kill me easily, but if it gets a hit on my vitals then it might be a problem.

I got my stone axe out from the inventory and took a defensive stance and waited for it to attack again.

The Omega sabretooth did another claw attack, this time I swung my stone axe right against it, with a slash the paw was slit and there was a gashing wound with blood pouring out like crazy.

The sabretooth did not back down and bit straight down with its massive fangs. If its jaw got a hold of me, my bones were sure to be crushed.

But I was ready for his attack, I did a diagonal upward swing and hit the left fang. Because the stone axe was dull it was not able to cut through the fang, hence it resulted in the fang being cracked at the point of impact. The swing was still strong enough to sever the fang.

With the sabretooth stunned in pain, I took the opportunity and jumped in the air and delivered one final blow to its head with my axe. My axe cracked through its skull, and all that was left was a giant opening at the top of the sabretooth's head. With this, the monster was slain.

I tried to store its body in the inventory, I was not sure if such an enormous creature would even be allowed in the inventory or not, but to my surprise, the sabretooth's corpse disappeared and a sabretooth head icon appeared in the inventory slot.

Thanks for reading! It would be great If you could let me know how to improve the novel and make it better.
