THE PORTALS OPEN

I, Samuel Adams, awoken in the middle of the battlefield, bullets whiz through the air. I snap back into reality, as I pick up my M4 rifle. I shoot back at the Russians while limping back to an abandoned building with the rest of my team.

I got back to the rest of my team where I shouted orders behind the noise of screams of agony and gunfire. That was when I heard it, a sound so loud, it sent shockwaves through the ground. I wasn't sure I was right until I peaked over the broken wall.

"TANK!" I shouted as we all ducked down.

A shot was fired towards us, the boom was deafening and was followed with a ringing I could hear in my ear. I look around to see if my team was alright, and they all looked alright, just a little shocked. It looked like the tank was about to fire again, so I tell my team to brace themselves. 10 seconds...15....20....30... and a whole minute passes by, I get curious and peak over despite my team's warnings. and what I saw, shook me to the very core.

"A...portal, no, there's dozens of them!" I said in disbelief.

I also saw the enemy tank crew crawling out of their mighty T-72.

I snapped back into reality and saw a beautiful opportunity to take the remainder of the Russian forces. I quietly tell my team to capture them, and they did as I told them to, and we decided that today's battle was a success considering the amount of POWs that we had in questioning. I reported back to base while looking at the portal with dozens if thoughts racing through my head.

"That's it for now, you can return to base, and treat your team to a party of some sort." The commander announced after I reported.

"And the portals?" I asked curiously.

"We'll send a group radioactive scientists or something" The commander said worryingly.

I just agreed and regrouped my team and saw that we were missing 1 of the rookies. We watched and payed our respects to our fallen comrades. Afterwards, we headed for home, or at least it will be our home for the next year or so. It was almost midnight when we got back. I was greeted by my long time best friend, we've known each other since infancy. He goes by the name Foxtrot, but i call him by his name, which is Steve Arthur. we've done everything together, and here we are...signing up to the military to be able to afford collage.

"Hey, Sam!" Steve exclaimed while holding two bottles of beer on both hands.

As I was about to invite the rookies to the bar, I saw their dead expressions, they were completely dead on the inside, which was pretty normal considering they just started field work today.

"Rough one, huh?" Steve remarked while the rookies walked to the barracks like zombies.

"Yeah, always hits 'em the hardest.." I said while taking the beer out of my friend's hand.

We had a toast for the fallen men, and a moment of silence. The whole night we were both chugging bottles after bottles of beer while talking and sharing stories and reminisced about old times.

"I heard portals suddenly appeared." Steve said, after chugging yet another bottle of beer.

"Hm? Ah, yes they were everywhere, like dozens of them, but nothing came through."

"Isn't something out of a sci-fi movie?" Steve remarked looking all concerned.

"I know right!" I exclaimed.

"I don't know man, my gut tells me something bad is gonna happen."He said while rubbing his belly.

"your gut tells you all sorts of nonsense!" I remarked jokingly.

A couple of weeks pass by, and one rainy morning, I was awoken by the emergency alarms and I quickly get ready and report to the head general.

"Sir! Samuel Adams, reporting for duty sir! What's the threat?"

"No time to explain, deploy every unit available!" He commanded, with a distressed look on his face.

"Sir, yes sir!" I responded sternly without question.

I scrambled out the room to regroup my team, and on the way I met Steve.

"What's going on?" Steve said while we walk hastily to the barracks.

"I don't know! Just gather your team and follow me!" I sternly command.

"Got it, just don't start without me!"

Soon Steve's and my team was gathered and we were all loaded in Humvees. When we got there, we were met by screams of terror, and the heat from fire. The buildings were also all knocked down by something colossal.

"What do you think it is?" Steve asked, while inspecting the buildings and the way there was a trail of fire.

"Mechs?" I took a guess.

"Maybe...If so its definitely the Chinese..." Steve remarked.

"Maybe its a super weapon of some sort..."

"Uh, guys, what's that?" one of the members of my party said, with a trembling voice.

We all looked in the sky where he was pointing and what we saw was peculiar...

"Wait...isn't that a...DRAGON?"
