Order of the First Ember (part 4)

"So… it seems as though you three had a good evening."

"Well, its the end of the week and we wanted a night on the – oh shit – I think I'm going to throw up."

Eli ran back outside and leaned against a tree and purged. The other two stood looking sheepish in front of Michah waiting for Eli to come back. Once he returned Michah turned to him.

"I expect you take tomorrow to recover as we have been invited to a party held by lord and lady Jas."

"Yes sir."

Michah walked away slightly amused by the night's events. They walked through the greeting room and stopped one of the servants that were nearby "can you please prepare tea made of seraph root and have a pot bought to our room now and again in the morning"

"But sir?" Philip asked slightly jealous.

"Relax Philip, you need sleep just as much as we do, it would be cruel to ask for you to work when you are in the same state as we, no, take the morning off and return to my service mid-day."

Sighing in relief "Yes sir, thank you." They then made their way to the lift and went to bed. Dreams of Aamira singing, and dancing filled his mind. He woke late in the morning, he looked over to find Aamira was not next to him, he shifted to sit up, he looked to his left and saw his belt with his sword hanging on a hook. He looked as saw that Aamira was in the bath. He walked over and slid in as well.

He sighed with relief "Oh that's good."

"Mh-hm" she mumbled sleepily. They spent time together soaking in the hot water. Eli donned his sleeveless robe and stepped onto the balcony. He soaked up the warm sunlight Aamira then joined him and handed over a mug of seraph root tea which he drank quickly, he refiled and emptied the cup several times. Once he was sufficiently refreshed, he belted on his sword and made his way down to the production floor in the basement. He walked past the forge room further down the hall. He came to a door and knocked.

"Come in." came a voice from behind the door.

The portly servant was standing next to a mannequin. He was working on a gown made from the beautiful orange silk he got from the market some days ago. After a few moments he stopped his work and looked over to his visitor.

"Young master Eli, how may I help you?"

"I was wandering if any of my new clothes are ready? We have been invited to a ball this evening and I wanted something elegant."

"Did you not see them in the room?" he said slightly surprised.

"When were they put there?" Eli asked feeling stupid.

"The cabinet you ordered was delivered yesterday and then Philip came to collect the completed works."

"I see, thank you." Eli then made his way back down the hallway toward the hypnotic clang of hammer on anvil. He slowed down as he got closer to the smithing room. He heard the dwarven smith chanting over the steel he was working to keep a steady rhythm. He thought about going in but decided to, instead, have a look at his new clothes. He went back to his room and walked to his new cupboard.

"Did you miss something this morning?" Aamira asked cheekily.

"Uh - no I just -" stammering trying to find the right words.

"Very convincing." she teased.

Without saying anything more, he opened the thick polished wooden doors which opened smoothly and silently. He was greeted by a collection of richly coloured robes, tunics and pants made of the finest fabrics. At the bottom was a collection of fine boots, some working, and others dress as well as belts, gloves, coats socks scarves.

"Beautiful." He said amazed by the collection. "just beautiful."

Walking over, Aamira put her hand on his shoulder and moved him aside gently. "Here, let me." She looked through the fine collection touching each item. She picked out a light blue tunic, fine black pants, and beautiful dress shoes. "Here, try these on, see how they fit."

He put the clothes on that Aamira had selected, they were cool and smooth against his skin. He walked over to the tall free-standing mirror by the bath. He looked himself over and could not believe that the man he saw was him. He could have passed as a noble o high lord, the clothes were of the finest make, even the rich townsfolk did not dress this well. A pang of discomfort soon enveloped him as he saw how much he had changed over a few short months. He had gone through a growth spurt, his training had hardened and shaped his body. His hair was longer than it had ever been.

"What's wrong sweetie?" concern evident on her face after seeing his distress.

"I don't know, I have just changed so much since leaving the valley… and I need a hair-cut." quickly comforted by Aamira wrapping her arms around him. She looked at his reflection with him.

"Yes, you have changed, but you look amazing, you have grown strong and handsome. And if it is any consolation, I think you are perfect."

Smiling at her words "I still need that haircut."

"Well, let's go to the barber, it will be good to have a fresh look for the tonight. Besides, you will make amazing arm candy." she giggled looking up at him.

They spent the rest of the day getting ready for the party. Eli got his hair cut and styled it was still long but it was no longer messy; Aamira had her hair styled by one of the servants which took several hours. The side of her hair was braided into intricate patterns that were held in place by shiny white steel clips which then got lost in her long smooth hair which ran down to the top of her thighs. The rest of her hair was braided neatly into a manageable length. While she was getting her hair done, she was playing with Elis and before long he had a neat braid coming from just above his temple. He looked in the mirror and to his surprise he found the braid quite pleasing. He got one of the servants to fetch a clip. The gold made a brilliant contrast to his glossy midnight hair. He made a playful flourish as he turned, Aamira giggled and smiled.

"It looks quite good actually." She giggled. Pleased, he turned back toward the mirror and inspected the braid one more time. Satisfied he turned and walked over to the window, he listened to the quiet conversation that Aamira and her servant were having. After an hour, his servant Philip came into the room from the lift.

"Sir, its almost time to leave."

"Mmh very well."

Philip walked over to where Eli's party ensemble was set and placed a small chest beside it. Eli arrived by his side.

"Sweetie, I'm going to the fitting room to get my new dress. I'll see you downstairs." She smiled and turned with her servant close behind. Her servant curtsied to him and got onto the lift with Aamira. As they left Philip asked.

"How are you Feeling this evening sir?"

"Nervous." He said shortly.

"Well, since we are going to be spending time with the city's high society, there are courtesies that must be observed. If you will allow, I would like to teach you a few things to get you through the night."

"Sure, that will get my mind off of how nervous I am."

While dressing Eli, Philip went through the correct way to greet lords and ladies. Gave him some information about different noble families. "Also, Michah is not technically nobility, however he is respected by most of the great families of the city. So, no one is obligated to bow to him and by extension you and Aamira, but don't be surprised if they do. He is immensely popular and like I said, respected. If you are asked what your relationship to Michah is, you will call yourself his ward. This is for both secrecy and safety. Also, please be careful what you say because there are many spies in the city and the rich and powerful are no different, no matter how nice they are, everyone is trying to get above everyone else." Suddenly more nervous due to his warning Eli sighed. "But, on to more interesting conversation, you get to pick what jewellery you want to wear."

"Jewellery? I have never worn jewellery before." The nerves were swept away by excitement. Philip opened the small chest which contained a mass of rings, chains of gold, platinum, silver, and other precious metals. There were also elegant yet masculine circlets in the chest, they looked like they were made by elves, the artisanship was spectacular and intricate. They were made of precious metals, and each had a distinctive style and different collection of gemstones.

Eli looked over the collection with awe. He picked up and inspected the items that caught his eye. He eventually chose two rings and placed them on the middle and little finger on his left hand. He looked over the collection once more and chose one to put on his index finger on his right.

"Do you want to choose a circlet?" Philip asked putting the rest of the rings back in the chest.

"I think I would look a bit foolish with one of those."

"Nonsense. Everyone will be wearing them."

"You think?"

"Of course. I would not do anything to make you look foolish, I would wager you and mistress Aamira will be the best-looking couple at the party."

"What makes you say that?"

"Well, you are new, arriving with Michah with his granddaughter on your arm. You will instantly become a talking point. The nobility and the rich are a fairly small community so word will spread fast."

He thought on that while he looked over the fine collection of circlets, he wanted to ware one because they were beautiful, but he still felt worried he would look foolish, he picked up a bright white-silver circlet, it had a large ruby in the centre with a diamond on either side, the ridges of the carvings were gold. He held it up to the late afternoon light. The gems were glittering brilliantly, and the polished metal sparkled. It was a true masterpiece.

"Here let me show you."

He looked to his servant. He performed a deep bow with his head directly down.

"Do this so your hair will fall straight, then place the circlet on feeding the hair through the middle."

He did as he was instructed, he lifted back to his full height and his hair fell over circlet. He looked at himself in the mirror and blushed. Everything he was wearing could be used to buy his entire valley. He was reluctant to admit that he looked like a great prince. He was pleased with his appearance but was soon overcome by an unexplainable embarrassment.

Sensing his anxiety and embarrassment Philip looked at him.

"Absolutely marvellous. You look fantastic sir."

"I feel like a damned fool, it makes me look like a woman!"

"No, it doesn't" Philip said with obvious amusement.

He adjusted his hair to cover more of the circlet. He grunted in response to Philip. He straightened his tunic as he stood straight inspecting his new appearance. He still didn't quite recognise himself, even less so now he was garbed in the finest clothes and jewellery. He looked like someone he might have bowed to back in the valley, he smiled and shook his head. The more he looked at himself the better he felt. He turned around and looked at Philip who knew what he was thinking and it made him smile.

Eli looked at him for a moment. "Okay - alright" he said shaking his head and waving his hand.

"It is time to go sir, the carriage will be arriving any moment, and you still need your dress sword."

"My what?"

"Dress sword, its more like a piece of jewellery than an actual weapon, it is just a display of wealth."

The concept of a dress sword seemed alien to him. But he felt more comfortable with a weapon, so he didn't mind all that much.

He inspected himself one last time and then went to the lift. They went to the ground floor where they saw Aamira waiting. She was in her elegant new orange dress. Her hair was intricately braided and tucked behind her slightly pointed ears. She was a picture of perfection, sitting above her brow was a graceful thin circlet with a tear drop diamond in the middle hanging on a tiny chain. A small golden dragon wound up the edge of her right ear, it had ruby eyes and was incredibly detailed. Set in both ears were diamonds. She was waiting with her hands in front of her and was talking to Michah when Eli stepped off the lift, she turned to face him and her eyes grew wide and bright, his heart started pounding seeing the woman before him, she was unlike anything he had ever seen before, and he felt himself fall in love with her all over again. They both forgot that Michah was there as she ran to him and jumped into his arms, he spun her around then put her down. Michah walked over to him and placed his hands on his shoulders. He was dressed in black and white, he also had rings and a circlet which made Eli less nervous seeing another man wearing one.

"You clean up very nicely my boy. Very nicely indeed." He looked Eli over then at the circlet that was hidden behind his hair and let of a small chuckle. Eli looked up at the man quizzically, but the old man simply turned and walked to the servants by the door. Eli turned back to where Aamira was standing, she got onto her tip toes and adjusted his hair to show more of the circlet, she looked at it and smiled. She pulled the braid over the circlet and ran her fingers down his face, they were locked in each other's gaze until Michah spoke.

"Eli my boy, join me for a moment."

He turned and saw the tall man next to the dwarven smith. Cedrick was holding something in his hands. Eli walked over and the dwarf unwrapped what he was carrying. Within were two highly decorated rapiers. He handed the longer one to Michah who took it and lashed it too his belt.

"This one is for you lad"

He pulled the soft leather away to show how detailed the hilt, guard and scabbard is. The blade was thin and long, it looked like it would snap if it were exposed to rigorous combat. Like everything the smith made, the quality and craftsmanship were exceptional. He too lashed the sword to his belt then thanked the smith.

Unable to help himself he drew the thin blade, surprised by the balance, he swung it through the and it made a light whistle sound.

"A surprisingly effective weapon in the right hands." Michah said watching him.

"Surely this would be no better than a skewer."

"You would think so, but I have seen many a man hold his own with a blade like this." The conversation lasted less than a minute before the carriage arrived by the gate. Michah grabbed his shoulders and looked down at him. "Tonight, follow my lead. People may line up to talk to you. You are the first new face in this crowd for an awfully long time. I will ask this of you if you come across any interesting information. Tell me, secrets and scandals hold a lot of weight for people that powerful. But you must be careful because people will try to gleam information from you as well. Mind what you say."

"Yes master."

"Good, very good. Let's be off." The tall man straightened his tunic and ran his hands through his long beard.

Michah, Eli, Aamira, and their personal servants got into the carriage and made their way to toward the city keep. The monstrous keep rose far above the wall, it was comprised of a large central tower that tiered down. The creamy yellow stones reflected the light making it look like it glowed. The conversation was lively on their way to the party, soon the streets were filled with elegantly dressed people going to the party.

"Alright, let's get going." The carriage came to as stop and they waited for the driver to unlatch the door. Michah was the first to exit, followed by Eli who helped Aamira. The three of them were followed closely by their servants, people stopped to look at them. The attention was strange, but Eli found himself enjoying it, he squared his shoulders and strode after Michah, he noticed that while Michah was still taller, Eli was by far the tallest person at the party. Aamira came up to his shoulder, but the rest were about the height of his chest, he felt like a giant. Aamira was next to him and had her arm locked with his, some people would bow as they walked past. They finally reached the door of the manor.

A guard looked at the tree of them and spoke. "Invitations please."

Michah looked at him and pulled three folded pieces of paper from inside his tunic. "Longford party" he said plainly.

The guard stood straight and apologised. He opened the door, and they were greeted by a large ball room filled with elaborately dressed people dancing and laughing, there was a band playing a lively jig. The air was thick with the smell of rich meats and roasted vegetables and tobacco. They made their way through the room and saw an empty area against the far wall. They stopped and gathered around.

"Alright you two, go and enjoy yourselves, Eli, follow Aamira's lead and don't do anything stupid, you two, follow them but don't be noticed. I have business with the governor and lord Jas who I will introduce you to later this evening."

They watched Michah walk away then made their way through the crowd.

"d – do you want to dance?" Eli asked nervously, even though he had danced so freely the night before, he was drunk and that made it easier, but he had not yet had the chance to dance with Aamira properly.

"Do you want a drink first?" Aamira asked to Eli's relief.

"Yes, let's do that." he said with a smile. They made their way to the bar.

"Two champagnes' please."

Moments later the barman handed them two tall thin glasses filled with a bubbly golden liquid.

"Go on, try it." she giggled as she took a sip.

Eli took a small sip and immediately scrunched his face up. "Nope! Don't like that!"

Aamira laughed sweetly and took the cup from him; she looked around and then poured Eli's drink into her cup. She then took a long sip and tuned to the bar tender, a pint of mead please. Once Eli had his mug in hand he looked around and saw how crowded the room had become, his heart started to beat faster, and he became nervous. Aamira grabbed his arm and pulled him closer.

"don't worry, I felt the same the first time I was in such a crowd."

Eli looked around once more, took a large gulp of mead and steeled himself. He suffered a few more moments of hesitation but was quickly able to come to grips with his surroundings. The mead warmed him and flushed his cheeks.

He looked once more at the crowd and saw a group of elves dancing gracefully in the middle of a circle. There was chanting and cheering. They moved with such fluid grace, it was mesmerising to watch, their movements perfect to the music making the other dancers in the roo look more like bumbling children.

"Do you know them?" Eli asked entranced.

"Of course. They are the wood elves of the veiled forest. But its difficult for me to be around them."

"Wood elves?"

"Yes, there are several different elven bloodlines, the wood elves, they are a cruel and blood thirsty people, the dark elves they inhabit mountains and volcanic lands across the seas, they are more bestial that the rest of us, orcs, actually share similar blood to us but they don't interact with outsiders. The sand elves of the scorched dunes. They are hardy and strong." she looked down and a cloud of sadness crossed her face before vanishing "And the high elves of the amber shore."

"Why is it difficult to interact with them?" Eli asked without looking away from the graceful dancers.

"Because they think I'm an abomination." She said softly, "There are other elves in the city who welcome me with open arms, but the wood elves over there are cruel and pure blood fanatics."

Suddenly disgusted at those he saw.

"Are you serious?!"

"To them, I am more human than elf. Which of course I am, but they find the idea of mixing blood repulsive."

"That's disgusting, how could they think that!?"

She grabbed his arm and he realised he was trembling and clenching so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"Please, my love, leave it, it's alright. I pay them no mind and they don't bother me. Please don't let that ruin our night." She pleaded softly. Eli could not ignore her plea or the sweet soothing tone of her voice. He took both her hand and raised them to his head, he kissed them and said,

"Of course, my lady." he said forcing a smile. They were approached by several notable couples, they exchanged pleasantries. But Eli quickly became frustrated by the tedious meet and greet. He was tired of the self-absorbed nobles that tried speaking down to him, once there was a break in the conversation, he took another long drought of his mead and turned to Aamira.

"May I have this dance, my lady?" he said with confidence borne of the drink.

"You most certainly may." She replied. He took her by the hand, and they swept onto the dance floor. The last time he danced like this was with his mother when he was ten years old. He quickly remembered what to do and they soon found the rhythm of the dance floor and they enjoyed the slow but upbeat melody of the music, he had never really enjoyed dancing but right then, there was nowhere he would rather be, he was in the arms of the one he loves, surrounded by good company, great food and strong drink. They danced together for a dozen songs, ignoring the looks of the noble men and women, they were locked in each other's eyes and nothing else mattered. They soon had to stop to get a drink and that's when they were approached by several people about their age.

"Please, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Lucious, this is Harv and Merl. I am the son of lord and lady Jas, Harv and Merl are the children of countess Ulla."

"It is a pleasure to meet you, my name is Eli and this, is Aamira. We are -"

"We know, you are with Longford" Harv said with a smile, "You wouldn't be worth our time were you spawn of any of these foolish ingrates!" he laughed but was quickly pushed by Merl who berated him for saying such things surrounded by the cities Elite. After the introductions were made, they were invited over to an area that was blocked off by two armed guards. They sat down on the padded lounge and a servant bought them drinks and plates of food.

"There, now we can talk in comfort and peace." Grateful for the privacy the three strangers relaxed.

"Bloody hell I hate these fucking parties. I'm expected to be here and greet everyone but when you see the same faces every few months you would rather be in your room having a wan –" he stopped abruptly remembering there was a lady present. "Please forgive my lady, the constant curtesy takes its toll." Lucious said lowering his head

"It's quite alright." she said calmly after taking a large sip of mead, she handed the large tankard to Eli who polished off the rest.

"So, how long have you been Mr. Longford's ward?"

"Since the start of the last winter, we travelled from up north the whole winter."

"Damn, that's what, five hundred leagues? More?"

Eli remembered what he was told about people trying to get information. "That seems about right but, somehow, it felt shorter." he said, pleased with his answer.

They shared good conversation for several hours, even though they grew up in unbelievable wealth, the three of them were surprisingly very salt of the earth and great company, they talked about weapons, drinks, the women they admired, the adventures they had been on. Eli enjoyed telling the story of how he and Aamira met, and then when they fought the Basilisk. The three nobles were most interested Aamira had become quiet as she was content to sit and listen to Eli talking, the party got intimate, heavy sexual tension clung in the air as the music slowed, the candles burned down. The dancing became carnal. Aamira soon sat against Eli, he wrapped his arm around her. Harv looked at them, he said something two the other two and they agreed.

"Do you mind if we have some company miss?"

"Not at all" she said sweetly. Merl whistled and mentioned to a servant, minutes later three well dressed women approached, he waved the guard aside and the three came and sat close to each of the young nobles. Eli blushed when he realised that they had called over three women of the night.

The girls started showering them with attention while they talked. Another servant came over carrying a large tray with bowls filled with different tobaccos, a wide range of pipes with different shapes and lengths, and selection of cigars. He placed the tray on the table and walked away. Eli looked over the collection and saw a small jar filled with a dark resin.

He picked up the jar and inspected its contents "Lucious, what is this?"

"Poppy resin."

Eli remembered from his reading that poppy resin was an incredibly potent pain killer and could be refined to even stronger drugs.

"I see." he nodded and returned it to the table. He saw a small jar filled with ground coffee beans and asked why they were there.

"It's for smell testing. After you smell each tobacco, you take a whiff of coffee and it cleans the palate, if you will."

"Do you want some?" asked Aamira. Eli shook his head.

"No, was just curious." He looked over the selection of shredded tobaccos smelling each. He chose one.

"May I?" he asked.

Lucious looked up from the pipe he was filling. "Please, be my guest." Eli took a short-stemmed pipe and grabbed a pinch of tobacco. He placed it loosely in the chimney of the pipe and took a match.

Aamira giggled and spoke, "No sweetie, let me." She then began to take a few pinches, press it down and repeat the process.

"Here." She handed it back.

"Now, as you light it, gently draw on the stem without taking into your lungs." instructed Lucious.

Eli did so and was surprised by the taste. He took a few long draws and established an even burn. They continued to talk and smoke for another hour, his head began to thump, and he began feeling a bit ill, Aamira noticed and took the pipe from him.

"You'll be ok, It's just the effect of the smoke and strong mead." The hours had slipped by quickly with the good food strong drink and lively conversation. Soon many on the dancefloor were locked in passionate kissing and other intimacies. Harv and merl were also enjoying their company and only occasionally joined the conversation. Eli didn't mind and felt strangely comfortable, everyone was relaxed, which was surprising as he was expecting everyone to be rigid and uptight, which was true for a few people but for the most part people were polite and courteous.

"Would you accompany me for a breath of fresh air, I would like to clear my head, besides I think you might enjoy a tour of the grounds."

"That would be most agreeable." Eli said and Aamira agreed.

"C'mon love." he said to his companion. He got up and made his way past the guards, they started to follow but he held his hand up and they went back to their positions, Harv and Merl were enjoying the company of their girls, if they noticed Lucious left, they made no attempt to follow. He walked to the closest door that lead outside, there was a servant there who bowed and opened it, before he walked through, he said something softly to the servant who nodded and rushed through a small hallway. Eli and Aamira walked followed close behind, the cool breeze was welcome as the air had grown stifling in the ball room. Lucious took several deep breaths followed by a sigh of relief.

"Good to be out of there." he said to himself not expecting a reply.

"It's certainly not what I was expecting." Eli said.

"It's not so bad, but you can get quite sick of it when your parents throw a function of some sort every other day." He said rolling his eyes.

They walked for a few minutes on the path next to the building, Eli was told that a famous architect had designed the house and that it was built for his great, great, great grandfathers, grandfather. Lucious would point out interesting parts of the grounds from the large hedge maze to the great fountain and orchids. In the distance torches were being lit, in the dark they could not see who was lighting the torches, but they soon reached them. And noticed there was a large square patch of course sand.

"This is the training grounds. It would be a real pleasure if you would consent to a quick match, the competition around here had become stale."

After a moment's hesitation he accepted. "I would be delighted."

"Good. There are some wood replicas over there, but I would like to remove my jewels first."

Eli handed his jewels and dress sword to Aamira but kept the circlet, he rather liked it, and it helped keep the hair out of his face. Lucious did likewise with his lady companion.

They both stretched slightly as they made their way over to a free-standing sandstone wall covered with wooden replica weapons of every shape and size. Eli took the bastard sword that seemed like the right fit, he swung it and seemed satisfied. Lucious grabbed a single-handed sword and grabbed a medium sized shield.

'I have never fought someone else before, I just need to focus.' Once they reached their positions, they made their last preparations and settled into their fighting stance, Lucious settled behind his shield and held his sword up next to his head to deliver a powerful strike or parry and block if need be.

"don't worry about injuries, there is a doctor on call."

Soon as he spoke Lucious charged Eli leading with his shield, Eli was shocked that his opponent seemed so slow. He resisted the urge to sidestep him and strike his back, instead he lifted his blade and bought it down on the shield, a loud crack and deep boom was made as the wood made contact, Lucious then pulled the shield close and swung the sword toward Eli's shoulder. Once more he was shocked by how slow his opponent seemed and then it dawned on him, Michah and Aamira are both vastly faster than he is, and he has been training hard for months and perhaps the old blood that runs through him is giving him speed and strength past what he should possess. He ducked and disengaged. Eli thought it would be wrong to beat a man in his own home and potentially hurt the pride of a powerful family. Lucious struck at him with all his might and Eli let a few blows land as he landed a few himself. One minute turned into five, then ten. After fifteen minutes of hard competition, Eli realised the young lord was tiring, so Eli made a clumsy strike which Lucious blocked with his shield. He followed with a strike to Eli's ribs that knocked the wind out of him, even though he was slower and weaker than Eli, Lucious was an exceptional swordsman. Eli dropped to the ground with a loud thud holding his ribs.

"Enough, I yield, I yield." He cried holding his hand up. Lucious was beaming as he stepped over to Eli and helped him up.

A loud cheer erupted from a crowd of young lords and merchants' children that had arrived during the fight. Eli was shocked that he didn't notice, 'I need to do better' he thought to himself. He smiled at Lucious who had offered his hand in congratulations.

"You are fantastic, I have never had to fight so hard in my life!" Lucious said laughing.

"I thought I had you a few times, but you got me at every turn, you are an excellent swordsman yourself."

Lucious turned to the crowd that had gathered. "I think that deserves a drink, don't you?" he shouted. A loud cheer was his response. Aamira ran up and hugged and kissed him,

She got onto her toes and whispered, "You did a brave thing, I'm so proud of you."

Eli felt blood rush to his face, one of the onlookers brought him a large mug of ale while he was putting his jewellery back on. He walked closer to Lucious, in an open space, he cleared his throat and held his mug high. He turned to face Lucious, "To a most worthy swordsman." Lucious lifted his mug in response and the crowd cheered once more. The cheers soon died as a bald man in embroidered dress and a fine cloak came through the crowd, he was followed by what Eli assumed was his wife and Michah. They soon stood at the front of the crowd. Fear ran through Eli because he didn't know if he did something wrong.

The man held his arms outstretched. A broad grin crossed his face. "Well, fought my son, well fought indeed!" Lucious entered the man's embrace. He then turned his attention to Eli. "You are a peerless swordsman, to stand against my son for such a long time is a most impressive accomplishment." He turned to the crowd "Is it not?" once more the crowd was cheering, and the clank of mugs could be heard.

The bald man then turned, nodded to Michah, and walked away with his wife in tow. The crowd parted to let them through then gathered back around to cheer with the two competitors. Michah gracefully made his way through the boisterous crowd. He grabbed Eli and Aamira by the shoulders and walked them a distance. He bent over and whispered.

"It is time to meet with lord Jas, make your way to the main hall and a servant will show you the way."

"Yes papa."

"Good, very good."

He stood to his full height, drew his pipe, and started filling it as he walked away. Eli took Aamira by the arm and strode back to Lucious. "Please excuse us, Michah is waiting on us"

"Of course, I do hope we meet again Eli, and you as well Aamira. If there is anything you need, come find me."

"That is my hope as well." They gripped each other by the forearm and said their fair wells. They strolled back towards the imposing structures at a leisurely pace.

"You did well tonight."

"Hmm?"

"It was good you allowed him to save face."

"To be honest, I felt kind of bad, he is a brilliant swordsman, but he was so slow compared to us."

"Well, you have just demonstrated true humility and respect."

A swell of pride welled within him; he took a deep breath of the cool, thick evening air. Torches along a path had been lit to show their way to the main hall, they finally reached the large doors that was opened by two servants. The room they walked into was similar to the greeting room at Michah's there were stands with exotic and foreign weapons, tools and artifacts that Eli could not identify. They were approached by an old servant.

"If you would follow me, please."

"Where is Philip" he whispered to Aamira.

"I think he took a liking to one of the maids at the party, they were together in the crowd watching you"

"I have not spoken to him I feel a little bad."

"I wouldn't worry about it; he knows his duty, even if you do not." she said with a cheeky laugh

They followed the old servant up the stairs to the master's study. It was well lit and warm; books and scrolls covered the walls to the left and right. A grand desk dominated the centre of the room. They walked in and were greeted by Michah and lord Jas. Aamira walked over and bowed to him then Eli followed suit. He inclined his head and spoke.

"I appreciate you humouring my son."

"My lord, I'm sure I don't –"

"Don't be ridiculous, I am well aware you threw that fight. You do your master proud."

Slightly embarrassed "I don't know what to say my lord."

"Don't worry, I am grateful you showed such kindness to a stranger."

Before Eli could reply Michah stepped in. "I believe you have a contract for us."

"Ahh of course. You see, over the past year and a half, the merchants who send goods via the great western highway have encountered difficulties, there are reports of monsters, bandits and worse. The city guard has been singularly ineffective in solving the issues. And I have – well, I have important business in the capital and Elandahh from the lord governor himself that I have not been able to conduct in that time."

"What would you have of us?"

"The governor had contracted me to send a wagon of goods to the capital via Nemdreth and clear the western highway at the same time." Michah stood for a long while staring into the flames of the fireplace, unlike at Michah's house, they were regular wood burners.

"I am far too old to undertake the mission myself." A solemn look crossed the bald man's face, there is no one else I trust.

"The boy." Michah said. Eli shot to attention.

"I – I'm sorry, you want me to go? what about my instruction?"

"There is nothing left I can teach you, that you can't find in books."

"But what about my study of languages, how will I learn that on my own" he pleaded.

"Worry not my boy. I have a plan." Worry was clear on Aamira's face. She clenched Eli's sleeve and looked at him, but before he could protest. "You will need to take Aamira with you, she will be able to help you learn the elder language. And she is more than capable of helping defend the governor's transport." said Michah plainly.

Relief swept over both Eli and Aamira. "Are you sure the boy is capable? meaning no offence of course, but you are, if I am not mistaken, untested."

"Well, – I"

"The boy is untested it's true, but he is more than capable, there are few his age that could defeat a mature Basilisk and live to talk about it." The bald man leaned back in his large high back chair. And brought his hands together in front of his face.

"Basilisk, you say, hmm." he said with a raised eyebrow.

"Do you doubt my word, my lord?" Michah asked.

"If you trust the boy to carry out your duties, I will too, however, if he fails, it will fall on you Michah. Am I clear."

"Of course, my lord."

Eli stepped in front of the seated lord, standing tall in the most formal tone he could summon. "My lord, if you choose to contract me for this endeavour, I will not fail. Nor will I embarrass my master or your lordships good name."

"Now that, is the word of a soldier." Lord Jas said as he chuckled. "Very well. I will discuss the details with your master. You may return to the party."

Eli bowed to the seated lord and then to his master, Aamira curtsied and they left closing the heavy door behind them.

"Holy shit. That guy is intense."

"True, but he is fair, good humoured and even tempered, that's more than you can say about most of the lords on the continent."

"Do you think we should accept this contract?" Eli asked apprehensive of whether he would be able to do it or not.

"Well, the western highway traverses the whole continent from east to west, it starts here, it passes through the great city of Nemdreth then the capital and ends at Elandahh, the capital of the amber shore. So, the road to take is easy. All we need worry about is the dangers on the roads."

"Do you think I could do it?"

"I know no-one more capable."

He grabbed her chin lifting her head, leaned down and kissed her. "Come." She said, "Let's go join the rest of the party."

"Very well"

They walked to the great doors and went outside; the air had grown cool. Just beyond the door, they saw Philip flirting with a young serving girl. They approached them slowly and the crunch of Eli's steps caught their attention. Philip froze when he came face to face with his master.

"Ahh sir, I was just –"

"Relax its fine." Eli said amused. Relief was apparent on the young servant's face. "It's getting cold though, I should like a cloak to keep both Aamira and I warm."

"Well." He turned around and collected a large thick cloak from a stone bench behind him. It was made of a soft but thick wool. Around the neck was soft wolf pelt.

"Is there another?"

"I do apologise, but I haven't seen the lady's maid since we arrived. And since I am pledged to you, I –"

"Fine, give it here." he took the heavy cloak and turned to Aamira. "Turn around."

"I'm fine you wear it." she got onto her toes and whispered. "I'll just snuggle up next to you."

"Hmm, I like the sound of that." he waved the heavy cloak over his head and set it across his shoulders. He fastened the leather strap and adjusted it. Once he was comfortable, he opened his arm and Aamira stepped close and he covered her with the cloak.

"Summon the carriage, I would like to rest, there is much I need to do tomorrow."

"Yes sir."

Philip walked away with the young serving girl following.

"Is everything ok?" she asked.

"Everything is perfect. I just need to sleep. There is much I need to think on."

They walked to the entrance where the carriage was waiting to take them home. The carriage ride seemed short. Aamira was cuddled up under the thick cloak and no words were spoken. Once the carriage had stopped, they returned to their room without a sound. They bathed and dried themselves by the hot bright flames of the woodless fire.

Eli broke the long silence "Are you alright? You seem very quiet."

"I am."

He moved in behind her. "Are you sure?"

She nodded. "Come to bed. I'm exhausted."

They made their way over to the bed. Eli had a dreamless sleep that night. There was a strange discomfort that he could not shake. Was it anticipation or fear for the long journey ahead, was it a fear of something far away? He could not place it.

Despite his dreamless sleep he woke feeling rested. A pot of seraph root tea was set on the table. The sound of the lift descending filled the room. Eli got up and poured two cups. He took one and went to the balcony, the sun had just risen over the horizon. The air was already warm and refreshing. He slowly sipped the sweet tea when Aamira joined him.

"Are you feeling better this morning." he asked.

"Much. I think the partying of the last few days had finally taken its toll." she said with a giggle.

"How – what should I do to prepare for our journey? I have never done something like this."

"That is a plan you and papa will have to discuss."

"I have a feeling it will be a long day." He kissed her on the on the forehead and went to the training room. The next two hours were spent in intense combat. He was tested on everything he knew.

"I am sufficiently pleased with your progress. I have no doubt you will be able to overcome any obstacle that arises on the road. However, I fear I have been lax in your instruction in the Elden tongue. To fix this, Aamira will help you on your journeys. She is already fluent, and she will help with your reading and writing of the language. Now as for the expedition you are to undertake. Would you like to hear what I have planned."

"Yes"

"You will leave in a fortnight; you will lead a company of 10 mercenaries from the mercenary guild. The journey will take you six months if not longer. The point of this trip is to clear the western highway and ensure the caravan gets to its location. I don't know what manner of dangers you may face but I believe you should be fine if so long as you don't encounter a trained magic wielder, dragon, or demon. The rest of the monsters that stalk the land will be difficult, but not impossible. If you want, you can commission a set of armour from Cedrick. Take the next two weeks to prepare for your journey."

"Can I take Philip with me; I would like a man under my command that I know I can trust."

"Very well, take him to get armed as well. But I don't want you being pampered on the road. He is just another man under your command, is that clear?"

"Yes master. Can I show him how to swing a sword properly?"

"Of course."

After another few minutes of conversation, Eli bid his master farewell and went to the production level. Philip came down several moments later after Eli greeted the smith. The smith had collected a thin rope with knots made every few inches. He took measurements of Eli's arms, shoulders, chest, waist, hips, thighs and claves as well as his hands and forearms. The smith noted each of the measurements down and then did the same for Philip.

"Is it possible to make full plate for me in such a short time?"

"That shouldn't be a problem, I have an idea for a perfect set up and have most of the pieces cut anyway. It should allow you full flexibility while retaining maximum protection. I won't be able to treat it like the sword, so it won't be indestructible, however the alloy I use won't soil. But I won't be able to make you a suit of mail. In such short time."

"That will be fine. Thank you."

"As for you young Philip, I might actually have something your size. It is a set of dwarven scale."

He went into the storeroom and re-emerged moments later holding a shiny set of scale armour.

"This is beautiful, thank you."

"Thank me when it saves ya' life"

"He will need a sword too," said Eli.

"Actually sir, I already have one." He interrupted.

"Oh, well, good." Eli said surprised.

Philip slipped the mail over his head and set it fell on his shoulders with a light clink. "This feels good, not too heavy and a great fit, thank you." A soft grunt came from the dwarf in way of a reply.

"Is it possible to have a set made for Aamira if we hire another smith."

"Well, yes, but I'm sure she is happy with the plate she already has."

"Hmpf, why am I not surprised" Eli said with a light laugh.

"So, will mine be ready soon? I would like to get used to it before I leave."

"I have a few small adjustments to make" he scratched his chin through his heavy beard. "And I will need to assemble them, but yes I will need your help to adjust it, so it allows your full movement."

"Great, when should I come back?"

"Let's say in about six days, I will summon you if I need you sooner."

"Very well, I shall leave you too it, thank you again."

The dwarf inclined his head but then quickly shot back up,

"Another moment please, Eli" Philip stood at attention and looked at his master.

"Its fine, please make a list of things we may need for the journey, we will compare that to mine and see what overlaps. I don't want to drag too much with us, but nor do I want us to suffer needlessly."

"Good idea sir." Philip made his way out of the forge after thanking the smith once more.

"I have something else for you, I forgot I had it when I gave you your blade."

"Forgot what?"

"The war dagger, obviously."

"Oh, of course." Eli said without any idea what the smith was talking about.

The smith went halfway through the threshold of the storage room, he pulled something out and presented it to Eli, a heavy dagger identical to his sword lay in the palms of the smith. The entire weapon was slightly longer than his forearm. It had the same Sapphire centre piece but only had room on the hilt for one hand. The scabbard is also made of the same polished wood with the intricate metal work.

"Yet another kingly gift, I can't begin express my gratitude."

"There is no need, I swore an oath long ago."

"An oath?"

"Don't worry about it." The smith said sternly.

"Very well. Let me know when you need help with my plate."

He then left without another word. 'That was strange, what oath did he swear?' Eli then decided not to press the issue further as he concluded that everyone has secrets. He half drew his new dagger as he walked to the lift and found it pleasing. The blade was the same shape as his sword. He then settled it back in place and flipped it over to see how he could attach it to his belt. There were two wide leather straps that ran across the scabbard. He removed his belt and fit it, so it ran flat across the thick leather, he returned the belt and fiddled with the position till he finally settled it on his lower back. He tested it by pulling it out and returning it a few times to get the feel. It was a comfortable movement to draw and surprisingly easy to re-sit. He made his way to the ground floor. Eli then saw Aamira's maid Tannah, he remembered how she disappeared last night leaving. He approached and called her to attention. She turned to face him; her eyes were red as if she had been crying.

"C-can I help you s-sir?"

"I noticed your absence last night, why did you leave your mistress unattended."

"I – I'm sorry sir – I – I" she dropped the basked of clothes she was carrying and cupped her face in her hands and started to sob. Eli's face softened and took her by the shoulders gently.

"I'm sorry, what happened?"

She struggled to talk for a few moments. "I – I was following wi – with Philip when a young servant asked for my h – help. So, I – went over but I was – attacked by se – several men. They shoved a cloth in my mouth" she started to sob again "They dragged m – me off and they -" she turned away and broke down in tears.

A pit of rage formed in his stomach. "I'm so sorry, if you tell me who they are, I will make them pay."

"N – no I don't wan – want to cause trouble."

"No, this must not go unpunished. Please, let me help"

"I – I don't know who they were, I just know the – they were servants."

"Would you know them if you saw them again?"

"N – no, p – please don't make me see them again!" she pleaded.

"Then please tell me how to help."

There was a long pause. She would shudder every few seconds. The scene made Eli sick to the stomach and fill with rage.

"I – I want them to – I wish they we – were dead."

"Then let me see to it. But first thing is first. Do you need any medicine or healing"

She looked down and shook her head. Eli looked around for a few moments, a plan soon came to his mind.

"I have an idea, but I would need to tell both Michah and the lord Jas."

"I just want this to be over."

"Now I want you to do whatever you must to recover. If you need to lay in bed, please do and I will have people tend to your needs. You have been through hell, and I will see it rectified. I promise."

"Y – yes sir, th – thank you."

She tuned and left; Eli was stuck there with the cold rage rolling inside him. He rubbed his face and began to run his hands through his hair when he realised, he was still wearing the circlet and jewellery from the night before. He saw earl walk toward the kitchen and approached. He quietly explained that Tannah was to be tended to.

"Not to worry sir, I will be sure to take good care of her." Eli asked after Michah's where abouts, thanked him for his help and made his way to Michah's study. He knocked on the door and entered. He told Michah of the situation and his plan to deal with it.

"I would like to talk to lord Jas or perhaps his son Lucious because we get along well. I would like them to line up their servants so she can pick out the culprits, I don't want to let this slide, But I wanted to run this by you."

"This is troubling indeed, however, we may be in luck, I have known lord Jas for years and would never knowingly employ such animals. And from what I have heard of Lucious, he would not stand for it either. However, I would like you to deal with this yourself. In any way you see fit. Nothing can teach you problem solving skills better than solving a problem."

"Yes master. I will see it done" Eli turned to leave but before he reached the door Michah spoke.

"Remember my boy." he slowed his voice to a deliberate pace "deal with this in any way you see fit."

"Yes master." Eli left and went to the lift and went to his room. He changed out of his robe and fit himself with a set of fine town clothes. He donned a deep green, soft weave shirt and brown wool pants that felt like liquid on his skin. He re-donned his belt with the knife and fit his sword. He remembered that he was wearing the circlet and he took it off, he held it in his hands and looked at it for a moment, he could not understand why but it looked somewhat different. He then realised he must have been remembering it wrong and placed it on the table next to his side of the bed. He decided to hold on the rings for the time being though.

As he turned to leave, he saw Aamira standing by the lift looking at him quizzically.

"Going somewhere?" she asked smiling as she approached him. Once she reached him, she grabbed his arms and felt him tremble slightly, his discomfort became clear. "What is it? what's wrong?"

"There is something I need to do" blood lust suddenly joining the cold rage within him. It was almost as if she knew what he was feeling.

"I understand, is there anything you need from me?"

"Forgiveness."

Not even a moment passed when she looked into his eyes and without flinching. "I forgive you, whatever you need to do, I forgive you."

It suddenly became clear to him, the depth of her trust and devotion became evident. He was quickly humbled by her devotion. "I would never do anything to hurt or cause you any pain. I hope you know that." He said softly.

"I do, that is why I know, what-ever it is you need to do, I forgive you completely. Just –"

"Yes?"

"Tell me what it is. If it might weigh on you, tell me. I promise, no matter what it is, nothing between us will change."

Eli shifted in place, leaving her gaze for second. "I need to -" Lost for words, he sighed and looked around the room as if the walls contained the right words. He looked back at Aamira who gazed up at him lovingly. "A group of servants at lord Jas's party raped your maid. I am going to ensure that they cannot do the same again."

Surprise and anger rolled across her face but quickly turned loving again. "Do what you must – if you need me for anything, just tell me" She cupped his face once more, got up onto her tip toes and kissed him.

"You really do forgive me, don't you?"

"I do." He was disarmed by her commitment. He dropped to his knees and took her hands and pressed them against his lips. Water welled in his eyes; He could not believe how blessed he was to have such a woman by his side.

"I can't ask you to come with me, but I promise, I will never leave you in the dark."

She lowered herself and looked at him, "That, is all I ask."

Eli raised and then helped Aamira to her feet, they locked in a long embrace. The sound of a songbird broke the quiet and they soon separated. Eli started for the lift but before he reached it, Aamira called to him.

"Keep it on, it suits you"

Confused he turned to see Aamira approaching with the circlet.

"Is it not a bit strange to wear it on non-formal occasions?"

"Not really, people just don't like carrying such wealth on them, but you can take care of yourself so why should you not?"

Reluctantly pleased, he placed it on his head the way Philip showed him yesterday, he adjusted his hair and Aamira pulled the braid from under it as she did the previous evening. He kissed her softly and then made his way to the ground floor. He stepped toward the door.

"Would you like me to accompany you sir?" Philip asked from behind him.

"No, that won't be necessary. But I would like a carriage brought around."

"Yes sir."

He walked out into the sunshine to wait the carriage; he made a small pass through the gardens trying to organise his thoughts and contain the emotions welling within him. Usually, he would love such a bright clear day, but the assault soured his mood, he could not help but wonder what he would do if Aamira were put in that position, but those fears were quickly swept aside by the knowledge she was far stronger and much more skilled than he was. He was standing in the shade of a great willow tree in the front yard when the carriage arrived.

"The Jas estate, please." he said to the driver before entering the carriage.

He turned to say something to Aamira, but he realised that he was alone, for the first time in months, he was by himself. He was both comforted and un-nerved, he was so used to her being close he felt as if a part of himself was missing. He spent the trip thinking about Aamira. Once he arrived at the gate, he told the guard that he wanted to speak to Lucious. He decided that he would be more comfortable talking to someone his own age.

He was pacing outside the gate when Lucious came into view. Lucious greeted Eli with a smile. Who bowed in turn. The guard opened the gate and ushered Eli through. "I am pleased to see you again so soon, what brings you?" Lucious said as he grasped Eli by the forearm.

Adopting a somewhat formal tone, Eli spoke. "Well, I must be honest with you, I bring poor tidings and I need your help."

"Hmm, I see. Join me while I walk the grounds. We may converse in private." Lucious instructed his guards to follow from a distance to insure privacy.

"First." Eli said quietly. "I must apologise for this, I know that we don't know each other well, but I have a serious issue that I need to resolve."

"Worry not, if I can help I will." He said reassuringly.

Eli stopped walking and looked around. "Last night, my lady's maid was raped by, who she believes, are several members of the staff here." Eli waited for his response. Lucious joined his hands behind his back and proceeded to walk at a slow pace, Eli followed his lead.

"These are bad tidings indeed." he stopped walking and turned to Eli and placed his hand on his shoulder. "Are you sure it was the staff here. Could it have been some guests?"

"I will admit, it is possible. I am sorry for bringing this too you with so little information and putting you in such a position, but I'm sure you understand the position I'm in."

"Better than most." Lucious replied grimly.

Eli quelled the urge to ask questions and proceeded. "I do have a plan to find the culprit if they are among your household if you are open to it."

"Please, I will do anything I can to help, however, I need to be sure beyond a shadow of a doubt before I deliver suspects too you for what I can only assume will be, most, unpleasant."

"Believe me so do I, the last thing I want is to condemn innocent men."

Lucious lifted his head and started walking once more. "Tell me your plan."

"Well, I would like to have your staff lined up, they should not be told a reason, just to stand there until they are told otherwise. I will walk along the row of staff with -" he tried to choose his words carefully "The wronged party. I should be able to discover who it is by a guilty look or a look from her. I would interrogate them lightly and if both you and I are comfortable that we have the right man or men. I deal with them. But I won't rule out the possibility that it could have been guests."

"Hmm yes, that could work. I will of course need to ask fathers permission, but I have a strong feeling he will agree. And my father will have to be present for the first interrogation. The more minds that are present, the less likely we will make a mistake."

"I am grateful beyond words for your help. But before we do anything I would like to speak to her to get some more information if I can. That way, we will be better equipped."

"Very well." Lucious stopped and breathed deeply "The fact that such a thing occurred, disgusting. I offer my apologies now and once more to the affected party. There will be consequences for this." He said shaking his head. "Follow me, I will take you to father and we can discuss the next course of action."

"Once more, I'm sorry I put you in this position"

"Please. I am glad you bought this too me. I –" He stopped himself and continued walking "That is a story for another time." The rest of walk was made in silence, but they reached the study swiftly. "Damn, father is in a meeting, this might take a while." He turned to face one of the guards by the door. "Please let father know I must speak with him and then have someone tell me when he is free."

"Yes sir." Came the deep reply from under the heavy helmet.

Lucious scratched his chin and ran his hand through his hair. "Where are my manners, would you care for refreshments, this may be a while."

"Come to think of it, my throat is quite parched."

"Follow me then. – I must say, once more you impress me with the weapon on your waist. That looks to be a blade worthy of a king."

"You flatter me, but the compliment must go to the master craftsman who made it." Eli said glad for the lighter conversation.

"That would be… master Cedrick if I am not mistaken."

"That's right. How did you know?"

"Hmm, I have lived in the city for a long time, I know who works for who, and who does what. Besides. I have seen his work go for a small fortune at the markets. They go quickly as so few items ever pop up, and that sword and dagger set. Easily the finest craftsmanship I have ever seen, a true work of art."

As they walked through a covered pathway. Eli stopped. "Here." He pulled the blade from its scabbard and handed it hilt first to Lucious.

"Amazing," he said and began to test the sword. "The balance, the razor edge." With a jealous sigh he continued "What a weapon." He reluctantly handed the blade back to its owner.

"Thank you. I am hoping it serves me well."

"I have no doubt it will." He said with a smile, Renewed vigour filled their steps. They reached a white gazebo in the middle of an orchid just outside of the main building. They sat down opposite each other on padded chairs. The two guards set up either side of the entrance stairs. "What are you thirsty for?"

"Hmm dealers' choice" Eli said, he had become far more relaxed knowing that he has help in his endeavour.

"Very well," he tuned to the servant closest to them, "A flagon of chilled raspberry beer please. And two tankards"

"Raspberry beer?"

"That's right, we brew and distil most of our drinks here, raspberry beer is my own brew. I'm hoping you like it."

Eli found it very easy to talk to Lucious. Another servant arrived with a plate of tobacco similar to the previous evening. Both Eli and Lucious filled their pipes and began to smoke. The conversation was lively while they were waiting for the drink to arrive.

"So how are you finding the city. You have only been here a short time, yes?"

"It's unlike anything I have ever seen. It is certainly different from all the stories I have heard."

"How so?" Lucious asked his curiosity peaked.

"Well, I had always heard cities were filthy, stinking cesspools, where sewage runs thick in the streets."

"Fascinating, it is not often a lad from a country village makes their way to the high streets of Tetoria"

"And I bet it's even less common for the county boy to befriend a lord I imagine."

Lucious laughed "That's true."

The servant soon arrived with the drinks. And a small platter of berries and fruit. He went to pour the drink but was stopped by a wave from the young lord's hand. "That won't be necessary." The servant then retreated toward the exit. Lucious filled the two tankards to the brim. And handed one to Eli.

"To a most unexpected friendship."

"Cheers." They both took a long draught of the cold sweet beer. "Gods, that's strong." Eli coughed.

"You like it?" the young lord asked somewhat self-consciously.

"It's fantastic. There is a fresh sweetness from the raspberries and unlike most beers you find at a tavern its strong." Eli helped himself to another few swallows. "That really hits the spot that does." Warmth grew and ran up to his cheeks.

Obviously pleased, Lucious asked "Would you care for another?"

"I had better not, I don't want to be drunk when talking to your father."

"Fair enough, but I'm glad you enjoy it." They talked for a half hour before they were told that lord Jas was available. They made their way back to the study. They knocked on the door and awaited the reply. Once they were allowed in Lucious spoke. "Father." he said inclining his head.

"My Lord" Eli said as he bowed.

"What can I do for you, hmm?"

Lucious stepped forward and spoke. "I'm afraid, we have a serious issue."

The bald man stopped writing and looked at them with interest. "That so?" Eli then stepped forward and told the lord what had transpired. "This, is most troubling indeed. Do you know who they are?"

"I'm afraid not, my lord, but, I have a plan. If you will allow."

Lord Jas sat back in his chair and indicated for the two to take a seat. "Please." Once Eli and Lucious made themselves comfortable, Eli recited his plan to Lord Jas as he did earlier that day. The bald man was silent for a long time, a grave look upon his face. He looked between his son and Eli during that time. "Very well. You have my permission. Please speak to the poor girl and try and get some more information. As for the interrogation. I will handle that personally, you may be present of course but since I imagine you have no experience conducting such an interview, I believe I will be more persuasive, as to punishment, if they are indeed members of my staff, I will hand them over to you to do what you will, I will also provide the facility, I would hate for the guilty to escape before justice can be dispensed. But, I must warn you, if it was in fact a guest, that will make things infinitely more complex… But we can discuss that further, should that eventuality arrive. As for the rest, it is indeed a well laid plan. I will make all the necessary preparations for my end, if you return home and send word to me once you are ready to proceed then we can begin. If all goes well, be here with the unfortunate lady at seven bells this evening. I don't want them in my house longer than necessary."

Eli stood and bowed deeply. "Thank you, my lord. But I must sincerely apologise for bringing such an issue to you."

"Please, think nothing of it." Lucious stood as well. "You boys may take your leave."

"Of course."

They both bowed once more and left the study "Will you be alright on your way home?"

"Yes, I will. Thank you for your help."

Lucious offered his hand and grasped Eli by the forearm and pulled him into a rough embrace. "It is my pleasure to help." He said.

"I guess I will see you this evening." Eli replied.

"Allow me to escort you to the gate." Lucious smiled.

They walked at a brisk pace as they made their way to the carriage Eli had arrived in. After thanking the young lord once more, he departed for home. The ride home seemed much faster than the one there, his thoughts were racing. A morbid excitement grew within him as did a cruel bloodlust; he was excited to have solved a problem so quickly but even more so to dispense much-needed justice. He stepped out of the carriage and said to the driver. Please be here a half hour past six bells.

"Yes sir."

Eli gripped the hilt of his sword and ran to the house, his speed astounded him, he had not realised how much the training and exercise had changed him. He raced inside and collected his thoughts, he had to move quickly and decided to talk to the maid Tannah first.

He asked once of the servants where she was and was directed to a small sitting area outside near the very same willow tree he had stood under that morning. He approached slowly and coughed at a distance to announce himself. She turned to look at him then returned to what she was doing. Eli then sat across from her and told her the plan.

"I am shocked you did so much so soon. You have been most kind for doing this for me. I know many who would not have gone to such lengths. Thank you."

"Please don't thank me. You have suffered as a result of working at this estate and it is my duty and pleasure to try and correct the wrong." A sad sigh of agreement was her response. "Now I must ask, do you agree to accompany me to the estate in hopes you could pick out your attackers?" She shivered at the thought of coming face to face with her attackers, but she agreed. "Do you think you could identify them if you saw them again"

Anger crept into her voice. "Yes, I would know them anywhere. What are you going to do to them?"

"Well, I was going to ask you what you want done."

"I know this is wrong, but, I think it would help me heal if –"

"Yes?"

"If I could watch you – well. You know."

"Whatever will bring you peace, I will see it done. When you can no-longer stomach it. You may leave."

"Th – thank you."

"Do you want someone there for support?"

"Well, – I would like my mistress to be there, but I could not ask her to witness such a thing."

"I will ask her. But you are right, I don't want to force her to be there, is there another just in case."

"Maybe Philip, he has been most supportive."

"Very good. Please prepare yourself. We well be leaving at thirty minutes past six bells. So please be at the door by then"

"Y - yes sir"

Eli got up without another word and started to leave. "Thank you." she whispered.

Eli made it back inside and went to his and Aamira's room. He found her sitting cross legged near the fireplace. She shot up and ran to Eli locking him in a tight embrace. He lifted her up and there they stood. Eli was glad to be back in her company. The strange void that he felt in the carriage had been filled and he felt whole once more.

"I need your help" he said softly.

"Anything" she said with steel in her voice.

"I just need you to be there for the young maid. I would hate for her to face this alone. I of course understand if you don't want to witness this. But you were her first choice."

"Of course. Anything I can do to help"

"I will need you to escort her home once – she has had her fill." Eli said. Aamira understood his meaning but was not dissuaded. She cupped his cheek and he pressed against her smooth palm. He enjoyed the contact for a few moments before asking. "Are you sure? I would hate to put you in -"

Interrupting she said. "What kind of partner would I be if I allowed you to suffer the dirty work by yourself. Besides, I believe you are just and reasonable."

"r – really?"

"Yes."

"God's, I love you, more than anything. You know that."

Smiling up at him sweetly she replied. "I know."

"I must say to you, I don't know how this will affect me. But I want you to know that nothing I could do would ever change how I feel about you. And that, I think is more important than anything" She hugged him tightly in response.

"I will inform Philip; I think I will need an assistant."

"He is dutiful and loyal, but don't assume he is ready for such a task. You must remember there are limits to a servant's abilities. You are not overly demanding, which is why he has not disappointed you, but remember, assisting in torture is a huge leap from an early wake up or a nice pot of tea."

Eli thought deeply but could not deny the truth of her words. Coldly but with no malice in his mind he said. "I need a man in my service with the stomach to do anything I ask. But nor can I force a man to betray his nature to serve my will."

Still hugging him she said, "I understand."

He kissed her on the top of her head and spoke. "I love you."

"I love you too."

Eli left the room and went to the ground Philip where he summoned Philip. He gave him a brief explanation of the previous events and of his plans and asked. "Do you understand what I am asking of you, if you cannot carry out my will, speak now without repercussion."

"I admit, I have never been in such a situation and cannot predict how I will react; however, you are not asking me to do anything I am not willing to do for you."

"You are a good man, Philip; I hope to repay your loyalty someday." Philip left to continue his duties until the time to leave arrived. Eli went back upstairs too Aamira.

"Would you spar with me for a while, I have much pent up energy and I would like to see how far I have come with a new opponent."

Excitement lit up her face. "I have been looking forward to this."

They both went to the training room Eli stripped himself of his sword and dagger and then they selected their desired weapons.

Once they settled into their positions, they stared at each other waiting for a break in the still air. A short moment passed before Aamira leaped forward closing the gap in an instant, a loud crack came from the cashing wood. Eli quickly attacked with a thrust then spin slash, both blocked with ease, unlike his fight with Lucious, he was able to give it his all. Aamira's techniques were like Michah's but had a fresh feel. They locked swords but both tried to push each other's sword to the side with the cross guard. Aamira pushed Eli back with her foot and unleashed a furious combination of slashes, it took everything Eli had to deflect the attacks, but the force of them shook through his arms and shoulders. She was unrelenting as she dashed forward once more, Eli did a quick sidestep along with a slash to the back but to his surprise Aamira blocked it without even looking, he disengaged to gain some distance then rushed her, he struck at her twice which were desined to fail, with the third attack he changed direction last minute to catch her of guard, instead, she caught the blade with the guard of her sword and twisted it toward her, she then caught it between her body and upper arm. She then twisted away yanking the sword out of his hands. With the momentum of the twist, she loosened and let the wooden blade fly toward the window. To her surprise Eli did not flinch but rather attack straight away, she countered which Eli skilfully dodged. Using his momentum he struck upward at her sword hand loosening if from her grip. He then palmed the flat of the loosened blade and sent it flying. With a brief wordless acknowledgement of each other's skill. They re-engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Aamira used a technique Eli was familiar with, it was vastly more defensive than the arts Eli employed. No matter how complex his attacks, she was able to block them, however she was unable to launch an attack herself. Minutes passed in a flurry of arms and legs. Eli then made a complex move to which Aamira had no defence. He stuck hard and fast to her body which would have broken his ribs. Instead Aamira went with it and flipped backward. Terrified he injured her he lowered his defence and stepped toward her which is exactly what she counted on and took the advantage to topple Eli to the floor and pin him down.

They looked at each other sweating and panting.

"di – did I hurt you" he said looking up at her.

"It was a powerful blow but no, I let it through so I could attack myself. I admit, the skills you employ are masterful, I could not find a single opening. If I had not done that, I would never have had a chance to strike back." she said with a laugh. She removed her hands from his wrists but stayed seated. "Its a true pleasure watching you fight like that." She said with a glowing smile

"I can say the same, I never came close to landing a blow. I admit that I should have known you let me in, but I was too caught up in the moment."

"An easy mistake to make."

"But a costly one it seems" he said with a smile.

"But a costly one." she admitted with a grin before leaning down to kiss him.

"It seems I still have much to learn with a blade though."

"You are very good, but I can see you are still trying to adapt your fighting styles to both hand and blade. The only remedy for that is practice."

Aamira then got off Eli and helped him up. They collected their weapons then walked over to the weapons rack and returned them. Eli fixed his sword and dagger to his belt and went downstairs with Aamira. They sat in the kitchen talking for a few hours waiting for the time to come.

"You should have something light. Just in case." After a small plate of bread, cheese, and butter, washed down with fresh milk, the time had arrived for them to leave. They walked to the door and there they saw Philip who was dressed in all black with a sword on his hip. It was a quality weapon, but it was plain with no embellishments or decoration. He was standing there comforting Tannah who looked nervous. Eli and Aamira approached, and Aamira hugged her maid. Eli then spoke.

"I'm sorry, we don't have to do this if you don't want to."

"No, I need this, they need to pay." she said with a quiver in her voice.

"Very well, let's get this done."

Chapter.

The carriage was already waiting, and they soon boarded and were under way. The streets were still busy which slowed their progress, but they reached the estate in good time.

"It's a few minutes before seven bells. Are you ready?" Eli asked.

"Y – yes."

"Good."

They approached the side of the large estate. Lord Jas and his son were standing there waiting with six armoured guards. They approached and were let in. The four of them went to the lord and bowed at the same time. Without speaking a word, lord Jas approached and took Tannah's hand.

"My dear lady, there is nothing I could say to right the wrong that has been done to you. So please, if there is anything you need, if it is within my power, you will have it. Do not hesitate."

She looked down "Thank you my lord. But what I desire is what you have already given. I will watch these men be punished and then I believe I can begin to heal."

"Rest assured, the few people who know will never speak of this if that what you want."

"Thank you, talking about it would only remind me and open those wounds."

"Then I assure you, it will never be spoken of. But before we begin," he turned to his guards and commanded "remove your helmets."

He turned back to the maid who looked at them for a moment and quietly shook her head. The bald man nodded then looked to Eli. "Everyone is assembled. No one knows what's going on and everyone has been accounted for. So, when you are ready, you may begin. Once you know who they are indicate to Grenn here." He pointed to the captain of the guard; who inclined his head then resumed his normal position. "And he will have two of his men escort the person in question to await us."

"Very well. Where will they be taken?" asked Eli.

"I have a – what really happened room. There, they will await questioning and if guilty, punishment."

"Very well." Eli turned to Aamira who nodded then to the maid, "Are you ready?"

She nodded and together they were lead to a courtyard where the servants were waiting in rows. Before reaching them, Tannah stopped.

"What is it?" Aamira asked.

"I can already see them."

"Are you certain?" asked lord Jas.

"Yes. I know them personally."

Eli then spoke. "I wish you had told me sooner; it would have made things easier on you."

"I'm sorry I – I jus -"

"Don't be sorry." lord Jas interrupted. "It is a hard thing we have asked you to do. Now point them out."

Tannah whispered to Aamira who then spoke. "The teen with red hair and freckles, and the two either side of him" Aamira looked down at Tannah who looked over once more and nodded.

The lord then looked at Grenn. "Take them!"

"Right away." he walked toward the three men with the five other soldiers in tow. Once they reached the them, one of the servants broke ranks and sprinted behind the line of servants toward the open grounds of the estate. Without thinking Eli gripped the hilt of his blade and raced after him. Once more his inhuman speed shocking him, he quickly reached the fleeing man tackling him hard to the ground. He punched him hard on the side of the head and he went limp. He knew where to hit him to knock him out after reading a book on anatomy. He checked the man's pulse which was raised but steady. He lifted him onto his shoulder and walked back toward the lord and servants. As he approached two of the guards ran to him and offered to take the unconscious man.

"Well, played sir." One of the guards said. They took him and dragged the limp servant to the interrogation room. Eli walked up the lines of servants who looked at him with fear and awe. He arrived back with the lord and apologies for the abrupt pursuit.

"That was a hell of a catch." Lucious said with a grin.

"Indeed. Now, let us begin this bloody business." Said lord Jas turned to face the line of servants and shouted. "Dismissed!"

The servants all looked relieved, and they turned and returned to their duties. The bald man started toward the back of the estate "The building is far away from the main house for obvious reasons."

They walked for five minutes before they reached a small sturdy wooden shed. Nerves grew in Eli as he saw the building. He knew what was about to happen but until that moment, it did not seem real. They got closer and the lord stopped. He whispered something to Grenn who nodded and strode toward the building. He then turned to Eli and the others and spoke. "Now, follow my lead in there and trust me."

They nodded their agreement and entered the building. It had a thick greasy smell that clung to the air. The walls were covered in tools of every sort. On a bench below the wall of tools sat a large bumpy roll of leather. On the other side of the room was a large shelf filled with large and small vials. Some filled with dried leaves and plants, others had a mix of ground plants. About a third of them held various liquids. Eli's stomach dropped when he saw the room, everything in there was designed to cause excruciating pain. The three men were tied to chairs of the far side of a table that sat in the room, the table had leather cuffs on each corner and was stained in dry blood. Eli lifted his hand to his mouth to stop himself from purging. He soon steeled his resolve and stood behind the lord who had taken the seat opposite the three men.

"So" commented lord Jas who was staring the men down. "If you admit to me know your crime, I will let one of you live. The other two will be given quick deaths. Otherwise, you will be subject to indescribable pain that lasts days, or even weeks." his words were harsh and slow letting each set before he said the next. "So tell me." The three men were trembling but stayed silent. "Very well." He stood and grabbed a cleaver from the wall. Captain Grenn walked toward the one on the left and undid the binding on his left hand, he grabbed his arm and placed his hand on the table. The man in the chair fought before the captain said if you don't want to lose that hand put one finger forward. He still struggled and groaned till the guard slapped him hard across the face. A loud yelp was heard then he went quiet, he stopped struggling when he heard a rasp of steel on a stone. Lord Jas had begun sharpening the cleaver on the far bench.

"o – oh gods, s – save me"

"The gods can't hear you in here boy, but we can." The man stayed silent. "Good. It's been a while since I have taken fingers. But I think I'll do something special for you. I am going to remove your fingers. Joint by joint." the captain let off a low malevolent chuckle as he held out the boy's arm on the table. The man's face went white as the lord approached. The others struggled to get free, they both whimpered and heaved as if they were going to be sick. "Now hold still boy, I would hate to miss." He lifted the cleaver above his head

A screeching cry pierced the air "Wait!"

"Too late boy, you had your chance."

"No, no, no please!"

"Go on"

"We – we did it, b – but I just stood w - watch"

"You liar!" cried Tannah.

"Well, boys, you have just been found guilty. I will leave you in the capable hands of my young friend Eli. Captain, please make sure the boy has everything he needs to dispense the justice this poor girl needs." The three men went white when they realised the lord had no intention of keeping his word. The captain put his head close to the man he was closest to, and a venomous smile dominated his face.

"Oh, that would be my pleasure sir, my pleasure indeed." he looked at the other two. The youngest on the end threw up over himself and started sobbing. The pitiful display angered Eli. How dare they assault a young woman and think they could get away without punishment. His nerves were washed away by a cold bloodlust. Lord Jas walked toward and stopped next to Eli.

"Do what needs to be done, but there is no shame if you cannot. The captain is well versed so if you cannot continue tell him, he will understand." He patted Eli on the shoulder and went to Tannah and spoke softly. "If there is anything you need, do not hesitate to call upon me"

"You are most generous my lord."

He made a slight nod in reply and then went to the door. "Lucious. This is a private affair. Leave them to their business."

"Yes father." he turned to Eli with sympathy in his eyes. "Let me know if u need someone to talk to."

Grateful for his words, he nodded then turned his attention to the crying men in front of him. He then turned to the wall and inspected the tools. 'I should start small, otherwise they might go into shock.' He found himself disgusted that he had twisted a book of healing the body into a work that will help him inflict pain. Aamira was in the corner with Tannah under her arm and Philip was in the other.

"Hmm, I think I will start small, I would hate for you boys to be in shock before the night begins eh'." The man on the right threw up once more and redoubled his sobbing. And once again the act of weakness and cowardice revolted Eli more than what he was about to do. Without turning his head, he said to Tannah "how about I pull some fingernails."

She started to cry and threw up herself. Eli turned and looking sympathetic.

"There is no need for you to stay."

"I – I thought this was what I wa – wanted."

Aamira was the next to speak, "Would you still like them to pay?"

She nodded "I – I just do – don't want to s – see it. Can – can I wait outside"

The captain looked over with sadness on his face "Of course dear, whatever you need." Aamira took her outside.

"How are you doing Philip, you all good."

"Not really sir, but if I am to be a good aide, I need to learn everything I can that might help."

"Good man" said the captain with a strange hint of pride. "A boy like that is worth more than a mountain of gold." He said to Eli. Eli nodded then took a thick set of pliers off the wall.

"Well, since you are already unstrapped, let's start with you."

He cried out "No – no please – you – you – you don't have t – to d – do this."

"Oh, but I do. Captain." before he gave his instruction the captain grabbed a strip of leather and tied the man's hand to the table in front of him. Watching the man sob renewed his disgust fuelled rage. Eli leaned down toward the crying man. "Save your strength," he whispered "You're going to need it." Eli slammed his fist on the closed knuckle of the trembling man causing him to cry out and flatten his palm, before he could close it, Eli placed his hand hard against his forcing it to lay flat on the table. The man begged more but it fell on deaf ears as Eli clamped the pliers on his thumb nail and pried it off carelessly. A cry broke from the man's lips as his nail came peeling off. Eli then dropped it in front of him. "Well, done. Now we only have nine more to go. But I think we can make this a bit more fun, every time you cry out. The captain here is going to peel an inch of skin of your sobbing friend over there. See, doesn't that sound like fun?" he threatened with cruel glee. The man closed his eyes and Eli saw. "If you don't open your eyes and watch what I'm going to do to you and your friends, I will cut your eyelids off." The man recoiled in fear, he was stark white and drenched in sweat. "Captain, every time he screams, scalp the young one." Eli knew the three men were blubbering for mercy but all he could focus on was the rage that filled him. Eli then started peeling the rest of his finger nails off one by one, taking his time with each. True to his word, the captain peeled more and more of the youngest boys scalp, the cacophony of screams and cries was enough to make Eli's skin crawl. He felt sorry for his servant as he saw he was about to be sick, but every time he excused him, Philip held firm.

"Captain, is there a brazier here?"

"There is. Just by your young servant,"

"Philip could you please make a nice hot flame and place an iron in"

Eli ignored the looks of fear from the three men, every time one of them fainted Philip would rouse them with a bucket of water.

Philip began to fill the brazier with coal when Aamira walked in. Eli saw what he had done and with Aamira there he was filled with shame and disgust. Aamira looked at him and spoke.

"She has had her fill."

"I see. Philip, will you wait for me outside. Aamira – please comfort Tannah." She closed her eyes and inclined her head and Philip went outside. Eli turned around and started to wretch. The captain came over and put his hand on his shoulder, Eli jumped back and the captain removed his hand.

"I'll finish up here lad."

"N – no I – I must be t – the one."

"Don't push yourself lad. You have done well."

Eli glared at the captain who took a step back and nodded. Eli knew if he continued asking, he would not be able to do what needed to be done. The men had started preying and begging for their lives.

"Captain, bring me a hammer."

From the wall, the captain retrieved a medium squared hammer, it was heavy and strong, and he handed it to Eli.

"Why not the sword, if I may ask."

"This is a noble weapon; I would not sully it by having its first taste of blood be that of disgusting rapists."

"A more perfect reason I have never heard"

*Crack* The one less cry was deafening, but Eli continued to bring the hammer down on the twitching man, the two other men were trembling and crying louder than before.

*Crack* Once more killing instantly and once more bringing the hammer down until there was nothing left of his skull, Begging, and screaming for mercy filled the air from the last prisoner.

*Crack* Eli dropped the blood dripping hammer on the table in front of the last man. Blood came gushing out of the crushed skulls of the three rapists. Justice was well served. Eli stood there trembling.

"It's done." Eli looked once more at the captain who nodded.

"Go on lad. Ill clean up here."

Eli was grateful and nodded to the captain for he was in desperate need of fresh air; he was unsure whether he was to be proud or ashamed of what he did. He slowly made his way outside where Aamira was waiting patiently. In the distance he saw Philip escorting the young maid. As Eli walked towards her, his legs gave out and landed on his knees in front of her. He started to sob silently, the tears running heavy and free down his cheeks. Aamira had kneeled next to him with a bucket of water and clean cloth, she pulled his chin up wordlessly and started to wipe the blood that had sprayed on him. He knelt there silently, the tears flowed freely from the corners of his eyes as Aamira cleaned him. Once Aamira had finished, she sat there holding him. It was a while before he was able to calm down.

"I would understand if you hate me for this. I –"

"Not another word. You did what I would have done in this situation and nothing more. I am proud of you. That was a hard thing you did. I know you are hurting and riddled with shame and guilt. But if it is any comfort, I love you, nothing has changed."

"But I'm a monster."

"No, you are not." Her words were like a sea of comfort washing over him. "I am not leaving you. Do you hear me, I'm not going anywhere." She hugged him tightly till his tears stopped.

"We should go." He whispered.

"Not just yet."

They sat together for an hour. Eli was reluctantly taken from his foul mood. And they soon set for the main gate. The time passed quickly for Eli for before he knew it, he was at the gates of home. Philip and Tannah had arrived earlier on a separate carriage. Philip was waiting for them by the door. Eli instructed him to follow. The three of them went upstairs to the room. Eli stepped of first and stood in the centre of the room with his arms on his hips.

"If there is something either of you need to say, say it now. I don't care if it is negative, I must hear it so I – we can move on."

"Sir, there is nothing you need fear, you have done what is right and just, it was difficult to witness but that had naught to do with you. You can count on my loyalty from now to the end of time. There is nothing you can do to shake that." Once more, he was overcome with gratitude. "Aamira. What about you."

She walked over to him and looked up at him "I have already said what I needed. You are mine, I love you and forgive you no matter what." He cupped her face and kissed her deeply.

"Philip, I should like a bath please."

"Already prepared sir."

"Then that will be all."

"Yes sir."

Once the lift had descended, Aamira helped Eli out of his bloodied clothes and then stripped herself. They entered the bath and the hot water soon washed away the painful memories. The visage of Aamira's pleasing form took hold. Aamira caught him staring and she smiled coyly. Eli then moved toward him and kissed her smooth wet skin. She took him in her arms and moaned. Eli moved back unexpectedly.

"What's wrong?" Aamira asked concerned.
