Chapter 5

He glanced at the floor and knew he needed to get that clean, but he was starving. And he assumed she probably was, too. He could eat a pizza, but he wasn’t sure what she could have. He filled a bowl with water and put it on the ground, then rummaged through his pantry, the puppy snuffling in his arms. He remembered he had saved a hamburger from yesterday and figured that might be the best thing. He heated it and crumbled it into the bowl. Her nose wiggled and she opened a sleepy eye and looked at him.

“Are you hungry, girl? Do you want some hamburger?”

When she opened her other eye, he assumed that meant “yes,” so he set her on the floor next to the bowls. She wagged her tail, her entire butt wiggling, and attacked the hamburger while he worked on mopping the floor.

They finished about the same time, and he laughed when she pawed at his shoes, softly whining. He picked her up and she licked at his face. “Now, why don’t you tell me how you ended up all alone in the snow?”
