One Piece’s Illusionist

I have always liked the art of misdirection and such, ever since I saw my first street magician. Never got much into it myself, but it was still interesting. It is because of this that I decided to incorporate this type of thing into a One Piece fic. MC is the older brother of Trafalgar D. Water Law, his name is Loki. They don't look similar at all, and his general appearance will be posted at the end of the first chapter. Starting point is North Blue. I don't own the cover. Enjoy!

White Lead Disease

It's been a year since I got those crazy powers.

Law and I spent hours secretly researching what could have caused my miraculous and completely unscientific change.

—-

"I think I found it Loki!" Law said as he came running up to me, holding a book in his hand.

"Really?" I asked, setting down my book on human anatomy and looking up towards him.

Law smiled proudly and held out the book he had in his hand.

The title of the book was 'Devil Fruit Encyclopedia.' Curious, I opened the book and browsed through some of the pages.

"Devil fruits are mysterious, distinctive fruits scattered throughout the world, know for granting their eaters super natural powers…" I stopped reading, looking disbelievingly at the description.

"I know, it's crazy, keep reading!" Law urged me from the side. I nodded.

"These fruits are separated into three categories. The first category is the zoan devil fruit. This fruit allows the water to turn into the form of an animal. This category is then subdivided into normal zoans, which consists of all living or well known animals in the world. From there, we have ancient zoans, which consist of animals that have been long extinct, for example dinosaurs. And finally we have the mythic zoans, which are the most enigmatic of this type of devil fruit. Not much is known about this type of zoan. All that is known is that this fruit allows the user to transform into a mythical of legendary being that doesn't necessarily have to be an animal." I paused for a moment. Fruits that let their eaters turn into animals? That's crazy! I kept reading.

"The second type of devil fruits are the logia type. Logia type devil fruits allow their eaters to turn into and freely manipulate a single element. They are considered the rarest type of devil fruit and are sought after by many. The user of such a devil fruit is practically invincible in the world." I once again stopped reading.

"This is the type of fruit I have, right?" I asked, looking up at Law. He nodded. Looking down at the page, I realized that the last type of fruit had the shortest description.

"Paramecia type devil fruits are the most common devil fruits. These have various abilities, most of which are silly, ridiculous, or border line insanity. Every fruit that does not fall under the logia of zoan fruit categories is listed as a paramecia type."

I finished it off.

'Devil fruits, huh?' I mused.

"Isn't that cool!" Law asked, his eyes shining.

"I wonder if I can get one!" He said excitedly.

I smiled at him. "If you want one I'll get you one! That's what brothers are for after all!" I said with a smile.

After that, I started playing around with my newly found powers while Law went back to studying with dad.

One day I was gazing up at a rainbow with mom and Lami. "Mommy, how do rainbows work?" Lami asked innocently, gazing up at the rainbow in wonder.

Mom giggled. "After it rains, a very thin mist of water droplets are left in the air. If the sun shines through these water droplets and they are aligned correctly, the sunlight will bend and change color slightly, giving us the illusion of a rainbow!" She responded.

"Woah! Really! That's so cool! Right Loki?" Lami asked, looking towards me.

But I was in my own world. 'Rainbows… huh…' I thought.

It was on that day that I started attempting to bend light to my will.

I couldn't control it, far from it, all I could do is arrange the water droplets of my mist into a pattern that would allow me to make something appear.

I started with something basic, a rainbow.

It took me months of trial and error, but one day in my room I finally got it.

"Law, check it out!" I said excitedly. Law, who was laying on my bed reading a book, looked up.

"Woah! That's so cool!" He said excitedly, setting the book down.

"I know righ-" before I could finish the rainbow exploded.

Dammit.

After that success I was bored and tried other things.

For instance, I made fog by confessing my mist. I also learned to fly by manipulating my body to do so.

And that is how I spent the last year.

But what I didn't know was that these would be some of my last days leading normal life.

It was a carnival today, and after Lami pleaded with me for an hour, I decided to go with her and mom. Law tagged along too, apparently neither of us could withstand Lami's puppy-dog eyes.

"What ride are you looking forward to most Lami?" I asked as I walked behind her and mom. Law was next to me.

Lami fell in line with us and grabbed both our hands.

"I want to ride the merry-go-round!" Lami replied with a smile.

I smiled back. She is just too damn cute! This is MY little sister! If anyone hurts her I'll be their ass!

Lami started talking excitedly with Law about the carnival.

"Now Loki. As the older brother I'm expecting you to look after those two, got it?" Mom asked. She couldn't stay with us once we reached the carnival because she was busy and needed to head back fi work.

"I got it ma'!" I said seriously. She smiled and pinched my cheeks. "Why so serious? Have a good time!" She teased.

"Mooom! I'm ten now! You can't treat me like a kid anymore!" I grumbled. Mom just giggled.

Suddenly, we heard a thump from in front us, coupled with a scream- "Lami!" Law yelled, kneeled over the collapsed body of my little sister. Mom and I rushed forward. She had a very high fever, her forehead felt like it was on fire!

'Shit!' I thought internally. Despite thinking of myself as more mature, I still wanted to cry.

"She just collapsed! I don't know what happened!" Law said, years already running down his cheeks.

"You did nothing wrong honey, let's just go back home and have daddy look at her, okay?" Mom asked, wiping the tears from Law's eyes before picking up Lami and walking back towards the house.

After that, things just went downhill.

Lami had been one of the first cases of a new epidemic called 'White Lead Disease.' From my dad's research, it was caused by the white lead we exported. Apparently the mineral had a poisonous aspect to it which effected our whole country.

It caused white patches to appear on a person's skin. It basically sucks the life out of someone until they eventually die. There is no cure.

After Lami's collapse, similar occurrences happened all over Flevance, and father was overwhelmed with the amount of patients he was receiving.

Soon, it became a sort of commodity. If you didn't have white patches of hair or skin riddling your body you were considered an oddity.

The worst part was, there was no escape.

When Lami and Law were asleep, I sunk to my parents room and listened in on them talking.

"-Ut why would they do that? It has been proven fo be caused by poison, and it cannot be transmitted! So why have the labeled it as a plague and sealed off our country?!" Mother's voice sounded panicked.

"I don't know. The best we can do is survive." Father responded, sounding oddly calm, as if he had already realized there was no way out.

I snuck back to my room and fell asleep, my mind swirling with questions.

Why were they quarantining us?

Is the situation really that bad?

…Are we going to be okay?
