It wasn't as if the idea was abhorrent though. Joy knew there were different ways that people showed love. Just because Derek's was a lot different than Paul's didn't make it bad. 

She knew she was important to him but the real question was how important. Because if he truly had liked her all this time…she had hurt him every time she cried about missing her husband. Yet he always comforted her without saying a word about whatever he might be feeling. 

This was all speculation but didn't it make the most sense? Her theory would certainly put a lot of Derek's behavior into perspective. 

Joy didn't know what she was supposed to do. She didn't want to bring it up and potentially embarrass him. Especially when she wasn't sure she would be able to give him what he wanted.
