1 First Day in the Asylum

"From this day onwards, I won't be a part of the Byron Household anymore."

Those were my final words to my father and my stepmother who had decided to relinquish my rights as the next heir to the household that I was born in.

I was naturally upset, of course, but with my father being powerless and me having no connections whatsoever, I had no choice but to accept this fact.

It was for this reason, that I am where I am now, in front of the Asylum, located in the middle of the Capital City in Irendiel, the duchy that I am living in. It was built between the Noble's Quarter and Commoner's Quarter as it was the only location that commoners and nobles would linger together, thanks to it being also an orphanage for commoners.

While it was a place meant for exiled nobility, it was still a place where nobles lived in, so it had looked similar to the old home that I had lived in.

I stared at the door that was right in front of me, next to grand white walls that would completely obscure the Noble's Quarter from the Asylum and vice-versa. On the door itself was a magical glyph, revolving around the centre of it that would require mana to operate, only allowing those with mana to open the door.

The Asylum had already been informed of my arrival and all I needed to do was open the door and enter it. I sighed as I continued to look at the door and then quickly did a 180 turn and looked back at the Noble's Quarter once more. This might perhaps be the last time that I would be able to go around the Noble's Quarter freely as there were only a few Exiles that would be able to do so for their duties.

Most Exiles would just spend all their time in the Asylum or outside of the Capital City itself to perform their duties of supplying mana to the magic tools in commoner ruled towns.

I closed my eyes to soak in the atmosphere of the Noble's Quarter once more before turning back towards the door and placing my left hand with a ring on my middle finger that held a 5-coloured gem on the door and pouring my mana into the door.

The circular glyph on the door started to revolve much quicker and it started to shine brighter and brighter. After a few seconds, the glyph disappeared from the door and the door immediately vanishes into the thin air, as if it wasn't there at all.

A commoner might have been surprised at such a feat, but for such nobles with access to mana and such magic tools, it was something that we would be already be used to.

There wasn't any luggage that I had brought with me since what I had needed such as clothes and the such had already been brought to the Asylum previously. Although becoming an Exile was, of course, considered a bad thing in nobility, there was a reason it exists in the first place, so there would also be a formal system for one to enter it.

Without looking back, I immediately walked into a room that was similarly sized to my bedroom and the door behind me immediately appeared back as if nothing had actually taken place.

In this small room was another door that would lead to the actual Asylum. It was a simple mantrap to prevent commoner's from peering into the Noble Quarters. The next door was an ordinary one so anyone, including commoners, could enter it.

Without nothing further ado, I walked towards the door. If I were a normal noble, an attendant would have helped me to open the door, but now that I have an Exile and do not yet have any attendants for me, I would be obliged to do it on my own.

My right hand moved forwards towards the golden and rounded doorknob on the wooden door. Once my hands were firmly grasped over it, I turned it towards the right and the door slowly opened up.

I had never imagined that I would end up in this place but I suppose life can be unpredictable.

As the door opened, the Sun started to seep through the gap and filled the room with light. I immediately squinted my eyes as the sunlight had naturally had covered my entire body as well.

After getting used to the sunlight, I looked around and saw that it was a courtyard, filled with lush greenery and flowers and right in front of me was 3 young people, kneeling on the ground who had just looked like they had just come of age at 16 years old.

They were naturally the commoner attendants that I had been given during my stay in the Asylum. Becoming a noble's attendant was one of the fates that awaited the commoner children that had ended up in the Asylum.

There were 2 boys and a girl wearing simple clothing that would be given when they come of age by the orphanage. The only attire for those who had yet to come of age was a simple brown robe but of course, those who were lucky enough to become an apprentice attendant might receive better clothing from their masters.

I looked at the three of them while they knelt on the ground on one knee and their heads bowed, which was the action one needed to take when greeting someone of a higher status.

"You may rise."

My arrival had already been planned beforehand so I wasn't that surprised that they were already waiting for me.

At my command, the three of them rose up and they were naturally much taller than me but they naturally knew who I was and didn't dare to disrespect me.

"What is on the schedule?"

The moment I had registered to enter the Asylum, I was already an Exile, so I would need to start doing what I needed to do.

"The Assistant Director had said that he would like to meet you first once the seventh bell rings. There is still some time till it rings, so we would show you to your room first."

I nodded.

"Very well. Lead the way."

One of the boys turned around and proceeded to walk and I quickly followed as I kept my footsteps light and my movement refined. Such movement was necessary and expected of a noble and I had been trained to do so from a very young age. The other two attendants followed behind me as we started to walk towards the building.

"Has my luggage been brought to my room?"

"Your luggage had already arrived in your room and it has been left untouched for now as we were waiting for your instructions before unloading them."

The boy who was behind me who was of average build for 16 years old and had simple brown hair and light green eyes had spoken up while we were walking.

"The Assistant Director had told us to inform you that he will let you know more about your duties once he meets you later." He continued.

I nodded in understanding.

Since I had arrived in the Noble's Area, I had quickly reached the room that I was assigned to and unlike before when we reached the door, the boy who was leading me opened the door and made way for me to enter.

I had already cast off all my thoughts from earlier and quickly stepped into the room that I would likely be living in for the foreseeable future.

While it was considered a room, it was more of a house since my attendants would be living with me and as such, there were multiple rooms connected to the main room that I had just entered that were meant for attendants and there was naturally also the other necessary rooms like a kitchen and a bathroom.

My attendants had also entered with me and they quickly showed me around the place and the last room that I had entered was my own bedroom and next to the already prepared bed was the luggage that I had brought with me.

While I had been forced to live in the Asylum, I had at least been able to keep the things that I had been using like my clothes and more importantly, the things that my biological mother had left for me.

After inspecting my bedroom, I headed out and proceeded to sit down on the chair in front of the table where I would be serving guests with while the three attendants stood in front of me to await my instructions.

"Please introduce yourselves."

While one would have expected to have introduced yourselves during the first meeting, they were naturally commoners and as such, it was expected that they wouldn't speak up until they were told to do so.

"I am Randel and I have come of age this year. It is an honour to serve you."

The boy who I had followed after earlier was the first one to speak up. He had black hair and light blue eyes and was average build as well but he was slightly more muscular than the other boy.

I nodded and the other boy quickly followed up.

"I am Lufian and I am 17 years old this year. It is my pleasure to serve you."

There was no need for me to know more about them for now, so my eyes quickly turned to the only girl in the room.

"I am Nicole and I have also just come of age this year. I would serve you to the best of my abilities."

"Alright. Serve me well and I will also ensure that you are treated well."

"Thank you very much."

The three of them spoke up in unison and bowed their heads at the same time.

Today would be my First Day in the Asylum...
