Wind and Sun

"Show yourself! I will end you myself, the rules you put on the world is unfitting!" Veil stood up and spoke on the sky above her.

["I granted the authority of the system to someone else."] The mechanical voice responded.

"Then show me that someone here and I will replace them!" Veil clenched her fists, if she could punish whoever established the rules of the world that made her suffer, she would gladly do it.

Vuimmm!

Orbs of light appeared out of thin air and took shape of a person.

"I am the one you are looking for, do you have a complaint?" Mavis, the current ruler of the system, arrived.

"You… Everything is your fault!" Veil summoned Umbralia out of her right hand, assuming a combat position immediately.

"Indeed, I have already admitted that it is my fault for making you suffer, but the rules of the system I longed for has nothing to do with it." Mavis unhurriedly replied.

"Then who asked me to pick which time to go back and correct its events? Was it you or this actual system?" Veil calmed down when she remembered being given a chance to rewrite the Ancient War.

"It was me, I used the system to converse with you and let you do what you want." Mavis explained.

"But why? It does not change anything for me. It does not satisfy me. It will not bring back the lost opportunities for me to feel happy in my life." Veil knelt down, her legs gave up.

"It will be better if I show you the lives experienced by the Heroes of the past, they are technically similar to you." Mavis turned around and drew runes in the air.

Vuingggg~

The runes turned into a rectangular translucent block, serving as a magic mirror that will playback Mavis' thoughts.

Mavis then proceeded to transfer all the related memories she is going to show Veil regarding the Heroes back in the Ancient War.

Spark!

The translucent block finally lit up, starting with the memories of the first Hero, the wielder of the Spinefall.

He is Morovi, from the continent of Arnelia; he was a guard of a city hall.

Morovi's life is simple and quiet; he would start the day earlier than others, training his body to be physically prepared even if his job is just watching over the same gate for the whole day.

On others' eyes, Morovi's choice of job is extremely boring; they would rather be a farmer who would enjoy sorting the crops when it is finally harvest season.

However, if no one would choose this job, then who else would besides the kindhearted volunteers?

Morovi's principles are straightforward, even if his life is uneventful, he still feels happy with himself.

That is only until when his job as a guard is finally going to be changed.

The people panicked due to the flood of monsters charging on their small walls.

This was the ancient times; there were no walls built higher than the infrastructures inside the cities.

People watching over the walls could see the monsters fill the horizon around their small city.

Morovi then tightly grasped the right hand holding his weapon, a spear.

Guards commonly are assigned with spears for a melee range advantage against potential attackers.

Morovi pulled down the helm tighter to his head and clapped his chest with his left hand.

He now also held his spear with both hands as he charged towards the gate to receive the monsters.

Clang! Swipe! Growlllll!

When the leading monster received the attacks of Morovi, it felt fear for the first time in its life.

The human's strength is absurd, thus, forcing to step back while stumbling.

Morovi knew he has the strength advantage, so he immediately charged towards the enemies with concentrated numbers.

If he lets this battle drag, he will be the one to die because of number disadvantage: one man versus a hundred monsters.

He must absolutely stand over this unusual number of monsters.

This is the first time he had seen this number of monsters after all, it was only a dozen monsters every now and then.

Morovi's training paid off, he is becoming faster and more adaptive as the battle progresses, killing more and more monsters.

The hundred soon became dozen, the numbers are culled visibly.

However, just before Morovi could take a breather, he noticed even more monsters, now larger and flying ones are among the pack.

The earlier monsters were just an advance party, but this time, it is the main army of monsters.

Blood and sweat dripped down from Morovi's face, panting heavily as he turned around to finish the last monster of the advance party.

Splat!

Morovi's spear is covered with blood and bits of flesh of the monsters he fought earlier, his hands are dyed with crimson red.

But he never chickened out, he stood strong as he entered a melee against the monsters on the ground, he could only let the flying monsters go pass him.

At this point, the people of the city have already ran out, he should just stay alive as long as possible until those people alerts the nearby cities.

Pant pant pant.

Elephant-sized monsters are now charging towards the lone man, but the latter continued to massacre the smaller monsters.

The bitter fight remained for as long as the lone man breathes and stands.

Only corpses of thousands of monsters filled the previous city, the flying monsters are now nowhere to be seen, they must have flew far away into the other cities.

Morovi fell flat on his back, wounds decorated his arms, his chainmail armor is falling apart, his helm is bent and he stinks of monster blood.

Images of Morovi's family suddenly flashed his mind, 'I wonder if this is my end, I have been seeing my family even now…'

His family tragically died due to monster attacks when he was just a newly hired guard, he still was not strong enough to protect the city, thus, not being able to stop the monsters from finding their victims.

He was late, when he finished the other monsters off; his family was already mangled to death by the remaining monsters.

This is why Morovi trained his body to its maximum.

Years passed ever since the bloody battle of one city guard against thousands of monsters.

Various cities rewarded Morovi with praise and cheers, but his heart's emptiness was never filled.

He walked away in the sea of praise without waving back, looking down on the ground full of blank thoughts.

Morovi walked back to the fallen city where he was stationed, he searched for his spear, but was surprised of his discovery.

His spear has changed, its wooden handle and its crumbling tip was supposed to be crumbling and frail.

Now, the entire spear feels sturdier than steel, the tip was decorated with skulls and the blade has a beautiful snowy color.

He immediately pulled the white spear out of the ground, when he did so, various inaudible voices of the dead whispered to him.

Growllll~ Gwraaaa~ Auurrgghhh~

Shivers crawled on his back; this sensation is scarier than facing thousands of monsters.

Soon after the voices disappeared, images now filled his head, the souls of the monsters he vanquished here and all the victims that fell under the same monsters have gathered in a single point: the ordinary wooden spear he once used.

"I hereby name you as the Spinefall!" Morovi decided on the name of the spear that is able to absorb souls of the dead.

From then on, Morovi wielded the Spinefall with great skill, growing even stronger by hunting every single monster roaming around his continent.

The exclusive ability of the Spinefall is actually based off of wind mana, which lets him manipulate the souls of the victims of his spear and absorb them.

Solara's origin was already imprinted on Veil's mind, thus, she asked Mavis to skip over Solara's.

When Veil absorbed the fragment of Umbral Reaver within Solara, she similarly sensed all the memories of Solara.

Solara uses the Sun God's solar mana on her Lightsong, which makes her the strongest solar mana user.

"But why are you showing me the origins of the Heroes you claim that are mirrors of me?" Veil asked with a confused face.

"Just watch everything first before asking more questions, as you understand the other Heroes better, you will also come to understand me." Mavis unhurriedly explained as she waved her hand to change the images playing on the translucent block.
