4 Donation

Two years later, Dexter was sitting in his room after he had just finished dinner. He didn't think life was too bad but knew that things were going to change soon enough. There were already deserters from Vietnam all over the city.

Ratana had taken him out a few times over the years to buy food and clothes. It was rare, but at least it was something. The last time he went out, he noticed that he saw an increasingly large number of foreigners of all nationalities and knew that his comfortable life of poverty would get switched with gunfights and explosions.

Dexter wasn't sitting around and doing nothing, though. In the last two years, he had been working out in all of his free time. Dexter turned from a sickly kid to a healthy one by doing situps, pushups, crunches, and various others, along with stretches. He was standing at 4ft 2' and felt that it was somewhat decent for his age.

The only thing he wasn't doing was running, which he felt was unfortunate but for a kid to go out by himself was dangerous. Feeling rather good about himself, Dexter opened his System to look at his improvements again.

He was happy with his accomplishments, even though they seemed minor. After all, an average adult had only ten, so he was powerful for his age. Dexter hadn't heard from the Devil ever since the first night and wasn't surprised; That guy probably wouldn't show until he was in a life or death situation.

The update costs only showed up after he earned the points; most likely, the Devil didn't even implement it until then. However, it was a fair amount of points for how easy the task was, so he didn't mind. After he was satisfied with everything, Dexter fell asleep and started a new day.

He woke up to his usual routine, and the old hag even smiled at him; she had started to take a liking to him; even though she was still a witch that beat a sick child, her attitude had turned around because he was a hard worker now.

Everyone was eating breakfast when the bell for the front door rang. The kids were even taught to act pitiful whenever someone came in to draw more donations or adoptions. A relatively wealthy-looking Chinese man came in, and when he looked at the children, he let out a sigh. He walked over to the desk where the hag usually sat.

"I'd like to make a donation; When I was a child, I was in an orphanage as well, and although my life turned out alright, I still ended up in this shit hole.

The hag Dara didn't even look offended at him insulting her city because she knew it was true, and everything was getting worse from the stories she heard.

"Alright, thank you; the kids will be able to eat nicely for a while," she replied with a grateful look on her face—the man left shortly after.

Immediately after he stepped out the door, a huge grin rose on her face. It was the first time the orphanage had gotten a donation in a few years.

Dexter was happy but even more worried. He looked over to Ratana, who had a smirk on her face as well. She caught his eye and came over and hugged him.

"Lil bro, we can go on another shopping trip; it's been so long!" She said cheerfully, which made me smile.

"We should be careful; the city is dangerous now." he suddenly turned serious, causing Ratana to giggle.

"Of course, I'll protect you, Dex."

The next day, Dexter and Ratana headed to the local market. They were holding hands, and both looked in a good mood. Dexter was actually extremely vigilant the whole time and constantly scanned the environment. With his perception at 16, it was hard for him to miss anything with his senses alone, but he knew that you could never be too careful.

He spent the next fifteen minutes buying food that he hadn't eaten yet in this life. His conversation with Ratana had him in an excellent mood. Dexter knew he shouldn't get too close to her, but he couldn't help grow closer to someone as kind and caring as her.

He doesn't remember if he had family or not in his previous life, so he would enjoy it while he could.

After the two of them bought the food, they left to go back to the orphanage and got home shortly afterward. It was a short trip, but Dexter enjoyed it all the same.

Entering the orphanage, everyone was waiting for their return, and soon they decided to start cooking. The kids still treated him like air, but they would sometimes return his greetings, especially if they were in a good mood.

Dexter decided to help Ratana with the cooking which she happily agreed, so the two of them headed to the kitchen to start making a meal. The two of them decided to make spicy shrimp soup. They were in a port town, after all. Dexter was never much of a cook, so he listened to her instructions but surprisingly, he heard a System notification.

[Passive skill acquired]

Cooking(level 1)(Upgrade cost 20)

It wasn't valuable to him because this was actually the first time cooking in this world. The two of them had brought the food out and laid it out for everyone. Dexter was in heaven; he wasn't even a fan of spicy food, but it was the first time he'd eaten something that tasted good in a long time.
