Chapter 27: Blood & Tears II

........

"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him." ~ G.K. Chesterton

The air felt different today in the camp, it was somewhat chilling. Every ninja of the village of Frost knew why, the Uchihas were here.

Information had reached them that they had arrived at Konoha's war camp, and only god knows what they would do next.

It was only a week ago that they preyed on the borders of Konoha like vultures, before the arrival of the Uchihas.

At the time, the Konoha war camp didn't have many shinobis, so the ninjas of the Frost could afford to mess around... Not anymore.

Today, the silence was deafening. After all, who hadn't heard of the Uchihas' horror? With their blood-red eyes that can put you in an illusion without you noticing, no hand seals needed.

Unfortunately, there is no falling back in their dictionary, not because they don't want to, but because doing so means being called a traitor by their own people and... Death.

It's not like they don't love their village, they do... It's just that this war is happening not to protect their hometown, but out of the greed of those who stand at the top.

The Daimyos and the nobles got too comfortable, now confident they could contend against the five great shinobi countries for more resources, so they naturally sent their lapdogs to do the work.

And well, the ninjas of the villages listened, obedient to a fault, or maybe they just didn't have a choice.

None of their circumstances would matter to the enemy, never. Therefore, it was no surprise that the eerie silence in the Frost camp was suddenly broken as certain information reached their ears,

"What?!"

"The Uchiha already attacked??!"

"Silence!!!" The war camp commander yelled to the top of his lungs, bringing back quiet to the camp, "Our food supply was attacked by what appears to be ninjas of the village of Waterfall! Team two, prepare to head out and reinforce our people there!"

There was no longer any silence as soldiers scattered and started preparing to head out, the air so tense that they found it difficult to breathe.

"I... Why would they attack us?" By the commander's side was his adviser who couldn't help but question.

"I know your doubts," The commander frowned, a troubled expression surfacing on his mind, "We were attacked only a few days after the arrival of the Uchihas... It's too coincidental."

"Could it be that the land of Waterfall decided to retreat?" The adviser had worry all over his face, "Wait until our casualties increase before taking advantage of us?"

"That's my worry," The commander rubbed his temples, having a headache, "We have no choice but to fight until we receive orders from the village."

They were left between a rock and a hard place. They will have to fight the Uchihas, and they will most definitely suffer casualties, many many casualties.

That will leave them in a precarious situation as the village of Waterfall may take advantage of that... That's unless they retreat.

Therefore, reinforcements were sent for their food supply, and if they arrived too late, they'd have to make sure their next food supply was well protected lest they're left to starve.

They were unaware of the many blood-red eyes watching them from far far away, hidden in the darkness of the woods.

"They're gone," They were naturally the renowned eyes of the Uchihas as one of them whispered.

"How many are left?" Questioned another.

"Hmm, about seventy percent," The Uchiha responded, "It will be a tough battle."

The Uchiha by his side nodded before bringing out a strange device, unfamiliar to most ninjas. He clicked a few buttons on it before saying, "Success... Approximately, Seventy percent left."

"Understood, we will retreat," From the device, a voice was heard. Only then did the Uchiha attach the device to his belt, leaving it connected as voices continuously sounded from it.

"Success confirmed. The reinforcements are heading to the supply food location."

Only a few minutes passed before another voice was heard again, "The enemy reinforcements just passed by us... Operation success confirmed."

"We've retreated," A different voice sounded again, "The supply of food is already on fire."

"Isaac is really a genius," The Uchihas who has been listened to the voices throughout couldn't help but mutter, "How this little thing can transfer voice from so far without chakra will always be a mystery to me."

"Two-way radios aren't even the best ones," The Uchiha by his side remarked, most proud of having such a genius Uchiha by their side, "I heard that some phones are already able to transfer video from a distance away. It's unfortunate though that they can't be used here."

"Nothing to do about it," The first Uchiha shrugged, "Those things seem to need more complicated infrastructure to function, I think? The radios seem to be able to pull even from the tower cells far far away."

"You sure know a lot," The other Uchiha couldn't help but point out.

"Of course, I am a fan!" The first Uchiha proudly bragged, "I can invite prostitutes from the comfort of my own home."

"What?" The second Uchiha's mouth twitched as his eyes lit up, "How did I not realize such use for them earlier? That's brilliant!"

Well, it's at least progress, so Isaac surely won't mind such a use. Unfortunately, their happy chatter time was soon interrupted by the solemn voice from the radio.

"Change of plans," The speaker was none other than Uchiha Fugaku, "We'll be attacking the enemy reinforcements. You all have twenty minutes to reach point C on the map."

The joyful air around the two Uchihas instantly vanished. When it's time to do work, they'll give it their all.

Thus, they brought out their phones, not the radios, but the latest phones produced by Cosmic Eye Innovations.

What they wanted to do required no signal as they opened a saved picture in their phones, and looked through the map before making their way there.

Konoha was simply decades ahead of everyone else in technology and while the Daimyos of many other countries were in talks with the Fire Daimyo to construct tower cells in their lands too, the talks didn't go very far considering the arrival of war.

Therefore, all the countries are now basically playing in the dark ages while Konoha leaped forward dozens of years in regard to technology.

Twenty minutes felt like a lifetime for the ninjas of the Frost as they ran through a relatively open road, afraid of an ambush.

It truly felt like death was by their side, giggling at them, and awaiting their arrival... That's war.

"You!??AHHHHHHHHH!!!" This is war as a deafening scream resounded throughout, startling everyone about.

Numerous eyes turned around to look at the source of the sound, hoping to solve their doubt and fear... They were left more confused.

"Enemies!! Enemies among us! He tried to kill me!!" The man yelled hysterically, his hand shaking as he pulled out his blade from the chest of the man next to him.

They were both ninjas of the Frost, thus why everyone was utterly baffled, "That... That's Akari!!?"

"Akari... Nooo! You son of a bitch! Die!" A nearby ninja strangely reacted a lot more violently than others as he stabbed the ninja in question.

"Stop!"

"What's happening?!!!"

"Why!!!"

"This is definitely not Dai!! Dai's eyes are brown, not blue!!" The man who stabbed the person who's supposedly not Dai explained erratically, "The enemy infiltrated our ranks!!"

"His... His eyes are brown?" The ninjas around were terrified but even more so confused as they warily eyed their surroundings, specifically, the ones they considered to be friends.

Now, they might just be enemies among their ranks. The specific ninja who stabbed Dai however had his eyes wide open upon hearing their reminder, "Brown? Illusion! Are we under an illusion!??"

"Enemy attack!!!!"

"Enemy attack!!!"

"I... I killed Dai?" The man questioned himself as he fell to his knees, tears falling from his eyes, two dead bodies by his side, both his friends.

The man broke before the start of the battle, and he wasn't the only one as the same thing happened to many others, followed by flames, flames, and more flames erupting from the woods as if the arrival of doomsday.
