Mrs. Maybelle

It's been 30 years since the last time I walked into this high school. I know most of the people but there are a few students here, whom I've never met. "Maybelle, is that you?" someone asked.

"Why, isn't it my old friend Sydney?" I smiled.

"It's been so long Maybelle, how have you been?" Sydney asked.

It is true, it had been over 10 years since I last saw her.

"Maybelle, dear, what ever are you doing these days? I moved to a lovely town just north of here, you should visit sometime. It's called Whitchurch." Sydney insisted.

"Oh nothing particular Syd, reading, gardening. Maybe someday I'll visit.

"Maybelle are you still writing?" Sydney asked casually.

Oh how I wish there was still some inspiration for me. I miss writing, I want to write but I do not know what to write about for I've lost my imagination."Oh no, I stopped long ago after my husband died, may his soul rest in peace."

"Oh I'm so sorry Maybelle, how long has it been since he passed?"

"Going on three years now." I said distantly.

"I'm sorry to bring him up, I lost Richard last spring. But please do visit me in Whitchurch this weekend, it would indeed be fantastic to catch up with you." Sydney offered. I worried that I would be a bore, I lost myself after I lost my husband, but why not? I should enjoy my friends while I still have time.

"Sure Syd, I'll visit you this weekend, I hope I won't be a bother."

"Nonsense." She assured.

All of a sudden, we heard a scream in the hallway. Everyone rushed towards the noise in a chaotic frenzy. There lay the body of a poor old woman. More people seemed fascinated rather than concerned. They presumed it was all an act, however I went towards the body to see for myself. I checked the pulse and nothing. I laid my head on her chest, nothing. I then told everyone it was not an act, that the poor woman really was dead. When they realized that I wasn't kidding, there was silence, nobody knew what to say.

I turned and asked someone to call the police. It wasn't more than fifteen minutes before the police came. I walked over to the police and asked them what they have found so far. They wouldn't tell me anything but they asked me if I knew the victim

"No, I discovered the body in the hallway." I told them. That's when they asked me why so many people were in the high school so late at night. I had told them it was a 30 year reunion. I also showed them what I had found near the body.

" What is that?" they asked me. It was, what looked like a message that was quickly scribbled. It was very difficult to make out the words, for she had wrote it in her own blood. As it turned out, the old lady was in fact the librarian of the school many years ago. I thought it was odd that the old librarian came to the reunion when she was no longer apart of the school. I had also thought it was odd that many of the other former students seemed to think it was all an act until I had told them she was truly dead. Why?
