Chapter 10 -Admission test

People quickly left the lunchroom and soon, it was almost deserted. Janice left Conner and Davies for the library as she complained about a presentation project she was yet to finish. They both sat in silence. Davies watched the lunch lady clean up the littered cafeteria. Conner observed him intently, trying to figure out what was going on in his mind. When he couldn't bear the silence any longer, he cleared his throat and began,

"Why did you do that?" he asked. Derek raised his brows at him like he didn't know what he was talking about.

"Oh, don't you give me that look" he said.

"I have my reasons. Don't you think we've lived a life of boredom for so long?" he asked

"That doesn't mean you should use your powers in the open..." demons who were admitted into Mourline were made to suppress their abilities to prevent human students from knowing of their existence. To humans, demons were mere mythical creatures that lived in books and their imagination and no one was about to change that. Breaking the rule by revealing ones demon form or ability to a human would lead to being vanquished to Therus for eternity, no matter ones rank in the demon world.

"Don't worry about it, besides, I'm not the one who has a human girlfriend . You should worry more about yourself ".Conner gave him a piercing look

" You know she's just a pass time ". Davis nodded absentmindedly. He didn't care much.

" We sure caused quite a site when we invited the Juniors",Conner said taking a can of water from the table as he prepared to take a sip from it, but he stopped and turned to Davis when he heard his next statement.

" I think they'll get used to it. This isn't going to be the last time ".He seemed to be enjoying the frown edged on Conner's face. If there was something the twins had in common, it was their skull of getting people irked with their attitude and speeches with the only difference being that Davis posed to be a bit gregarious while Derek preferred his own company. Conner couldn't say anything more. He wondered how the idea would sit with his brother, Derek.

" What about Marcus, did he leave already "Davis asked.

" After he went to meet Odette. I'm not sure it went well though "

" He didn't say goodbye. Not that I care".His lips pulled up in a smirk. Their meetings never ended well. The two were always at each other's neck.

" When do you guys plan to leave? "

"Probably by the end of the school year. Don't get me wrong but we aren't particularly excited about going home"

"Yeah, I know. I'd feel really sick going back to a psycho father",Conner said. Davis chuckled lightly at his statement. He watched Conner's retreating figure as he left the cafeteria before settling to his own thoughts.

He wasn't sure why he did what he did but he never indulged into anything without a reason and his instincts were always right. He didn't know what his brothers reaction would be but since Derek was always passive about a lot of things he was sure it wouldn't be a problem for him. So he stood up and left the lunchroom for the clinic. Emette would be needing his assistance

The days class had finally come to an end. Natalie walked through the corridors together with Kira who was babbling endlessly about the activities they were told to perform by Mr Langston, the schools disciplinary teacher. She tried as much as she could to grasp every word but she couldn't keep up. She was forced to halt her agitated friend.

"Kira... breath. At this rate, I can't keep up with you",she said. Kira took in a long breath with her eyes closed, "that's right", Natalie urged her. After a while of calming her temper, they resumed their walk.

"Thanks, but he's so mean. Giving the whole class a B- in the group project was totally undeserved" she said grudgingly

"You can still make up for it considering it's not a C or worse... D". Reaching her locker, Natalie brought out a black plastic card which had her name engraved in silver. She placed the card on a button like structure and the colour changed from red to a bright green, granting her access. The second floor of the school block had many lockers lined up on it's wall. The security was good and unless one lost their access card, their was no way their lockers could get tampered with.

Natalie shoved a few books inside before Kira spoke again, "You know I can't afford a pull back in my grades",she pushed up her glasses out of habit. She was under scholarship by Mourline school for an exceptional performance in her first year and was afraid it would be withdrawn .

"So much for an A student", Natalie muttered, "why don't you go to his office and lay down your complaint. He might... reconsider"

"Hmm... I wonder if it'll work" Kira thoughtfully said

They both resumed their walk on the corridors and exchanged greetings with a few students, most of who they didn't know. Natalie wasn't sure but ever since they had lunch with those seniors, they seemed to have drawn a bit of attention. She would always feel the hostility and sneers in her class from time to time, but as a freshman, that was currently the least of her problems.

"Kira?"

"Hmm..."

"When do you think the admission tests will begin ?",she asked

" I think it'll be in the next two weeks ". Natalie frowned. She had less than two weeks to prepare for the admission tests set up by the school. Kira had told her the tests consisted of subjects they did in class and also a sort of physical examination which was conducted by the school clinic. Anyone who failed either tests would be deemed unqualified to be a full time student of Mourline. She found the system a bit harsh but they didn't have a choice even though the time frame was short.

Another baffling discovery she'd made was that their phones were to be confiscated after passing the tests. The rule only made her have doubts about the school. She found it ridiculous but at the same time, she was powerless. She didn't call her dad much so she didn't think more of it after sometime. And since it'll be given back during vacations.

"I have to go back to the dorm and complete my assignment. I still have my admission process to complete"

"Okay... I understand" she wasn't unaware of Natalie's situation since she'd gone through the same as a new student. Infact, her shock had been greater when she found out about the no-cellphone rule after admission.

"I'll drop by during dinner. I have to go see Mr Langston",she said with Natalie replying with a nod

Natalie watched her leave and soon headed for the dormitory for her own business.
