Chapter 57

Before we could take a step toward the lake, Buna's voice halted our movement,

" And where do you think you all are going? " he asked. I could not see clearly and my head kept lagging off to the side, it was taking everything I had to be conscious.

" she is badly injured and in need of medical care, we want to dress the wounds. We do not have time to waste" Theresa told him hotly,

"If I remember correctly, none of you are done with your chore, especially the one you are holding up. I hate slackers so the three of you should get back to your duties" he said while walking back to whatever he crawled out from,

"Are you that heartless to allow her work in this condition?/" Theresa shouted after him

"Do you still need to ask me that? Carry her to the Cotton plantation " with that he left.

Maman kept protesting but alas they overpowered her and took me away. I could hear her screams and wails behind me but no one paid her any mind. When we got to the cotton plantation, I was roughly thrown to the floor. I heard Itoh's voice as she ran towards me , she sat on the floor and placed my head on her laps, she tried to guage the extent of wounds, but any little touch on my back had me flinching badly.

"We need to take her to Maman now, why did you bring her here" she asked in a panic. She stood up and tried to raise me up but the guards put an end to it.

"She is not leaving here until she is done with her chores. Buna's orders" he told her while glaring at her, he gestured back to the field probably telling her to get back to her work

"What do you mean Buna's orders, so you will let her die just because of an order from a childish and heartless leader who throws tantrum when refused?

She shouted back with tears running down her eyes. She looked so much like an angry kitten, whose only power is in its claws. The guards slapped her and she fell to the ground with her hands on her cheeks.

" I will pardon your comment and not report you immediately as I am sure that concerns for your friends well being clouded your thoughts. We have our orders, so get back to your work." He told her.

He carried me to the shed behind the plantation and placed me close to the harvested cottons. He leaned me against them and gave me his jar of water to drink from. I kept staring at him but refused to take the jar out of fear. My throat was dry and I wanted to drink it so badly.

" If I wanted to harm you, I would have done so outside, take a sip and replenish your strength" he told me. I took a little sip and handed it back to him.
