Where is she? I must mutter the words because Merv starts to talk behind me.  Oddly, he's talkative tonight. I shake my head and look at him. "I'm sorry, I didn't hear any of that. Just let me make sure Kelly's okay, then you can ream me, okay?"

"No, Crash—"

"Merv. Look, I'm pulling rank, okay? I'm sorry, but I'm not having this conversation right now."

"But you won't—"

"For fuck's sake!"

"Crash—"

"Merv, seriously, back off."

"She's gone," he says, so quietly. So finally. 

I freeze mid-step to turn and glare at Merv. His gaze is too soft.

"What did you say?" I ask through my teeth.

Merv clears his throat and puts a hand on my shoulder. I shrug it off. "I put her in a car a few minutes ago. She needed to get away from here, Crash." His face is awful. Sad, and angry, and pitying.

Fuck that.
