Quirk Apprehension

Spring came around quickly, mostly with the two trying to figure out what U.A knows. It would be on the relatively fine side if it was just the fact that they faked the information on their registration, but the two had done less than savoury things over the years that they would prefer not to be held accountable for. Including one count of murder.

Of course, they found absolutely nothing that could have clued them into what the hero school knew about them before the school year was about to begin. Even with Toga's strangely good information finding skills she wasn't even sure if they even had criminal records.

"You got everything, Himiko?" Mizuki slung a duffle-bag onto her shoulder. She wasn't exactly sure what they needed for high school, so she got everything that she could with some help from the orphanage who's information they used.

It turned out that they had also sent the uniform in the mail to the orphanage, something they hadn't figured out until much too late. They ended up having to explain what they did to the orphanage matron, who was surprisingly understanding.

She had already known about their situation, it seemed, as U.A had called them. One easy piece of information, that Toga was upset that she hadn't gotten on her own.

"I hope so. This bag is heavy enough..." Toga frowned, with her backpack slung over her shoulders.

"Well I wasn't sure what we were supposed to bring since nothing told us! What was I supposed to do?" Mizuki threw her arms up.

"The letter from U.A had a list of stuff." Toga helpfully replied.

"...And you're saying you could have told me this, a month ago?"

"Probably, but you seemed to have things handled so I didn't feel the need to."

"Himiko. You remember that I'm blind, right?"

"Ya, but you have that vibration thingy that you use."

"That doesn't mean I can see what's on paper! Do you know how little ink sticks out from paper? I sure don't, because I can't see it! Even then I can't read!" Mizuki clocked Toga over the head.

"I like it when you hit me." Toga smiled.

"I like it when I hit you too, now let's go! We're gonna be late." Mizuki completely shrugged off the strange comment as a joke.

Toga shrugged her shoulders and skipped along behind Mizuki. She liked Mizuki a lot. Despite how weird she was, Mizuki would shrug it off like nothing. It made her feel like herself, instead of some imposter wearing her face.

Mizuki made her feel... normal. As strange as that would sound from the girl who's favourite colour and food was blood.

"Himiko!" Mizuki's shout brought Toga from her thoughts.

"Lead me to the classroom. I can't read the map."

Toga led Mizuki to their classroom, 1-A.

Completely ignoring the ridiculous size of the door she slid it open, creating a loud bang announcing her entry into the classroom.

Taking a brief look at every person in the classroom she saw that most of them looked quite normal. She expected a few more mutants.

The notable ones who were mutants was a girl with long earlobes, a girl with what Mizuki believes are horns, a guy with a bird head, and a tall guy wearing a mask on his face as well as the fact that he had 6 arms.

But what really caught her attention walked in a moment after her, "Sparky! You made it!" Mizuki quickly taunted.

"You're that creepy-eyed bitch from the exam!" Sparky barked, as every dog does.

"Ooh, is that the insult you took a whole month to think of?" Mizuki shot right back.

'My eyes aren't that creepy though, right?' She found herself thinking.

Sparky growled but sat down roughly in a chair near the front.

Toga was already off meeting the other students, not caring too much for the rivalry that Mizuki was making for herself.

"Can I have some of your blood?" Toga asked loudly and the question which alerted Mizuki.

"Toga!" Mizuki said with the same stern tone as a mother.

"Oh no! Not my surname!" Toga called back.

The girl she had asked the question was squirming in her seat. She had long hair tied in a braid with no real unique features other than that.

"What did I say about your blood addiction?"

"But I asked this time!"

The attention of most of the class before it was promptly split in half by the arrival of another boy at the door.

"Did you even learn her name first?" Mizuki facepalmed again.

"Uh... what's your name?" Toga whispered much too loudly to properly hide the fact that she had no idea.

"T-Toru Hagakure." The girl stuttered.

"See?" Mizuki threw up her arms, vaguely registering the stern voice of her arch nemesis from middle school lecturing Sparky.

"But I want to know what- Woah, it's that boy that beat the giant robot!" Toga didn't even try to hide the fact that she was changing the subject.

Even aware of this, Mizuki was too curious about the guy who beat that giant robot, and turned her attention to the boy at the entrance. His hair was similar to Sparky's in that it was messy, but thankfully she could tell the difference between their faces. While Sparky had a sharp jawline, the boy's face was rounder, much like the face of the girl coming up from behind the boy.

"Ah, that curly hair. The plain looking boy!" The round faced girl exclaimed.

Mizuki wasn't sure if that was an intentional insult or not.

Mizuki tuned out the following conversation between the two as she felt... something, crawling down the hallway. It was like a giant slug or something, and she needed the eyes of someone who could actually see to tell her what it was proper.

"Himiko, there's something weird in the hallway and I don't know what it is." Mizuki pulled Toga toward the door past the round-faced boy and girl and pointed to the slug thing making its way over.

'What's that?" Mizuki pointed.

"A guy in a sleeping bag?" Toga seemed unsure herself, which wasn't a good sign.

The slug, seeing that it was noticed, stood up faster than any man in a sleeping bag had a right to, and begrudgingly walked the rest of the way to the classroom, sucking up the entirety of a juice pouch in 2 seconds flat.

The man's head turned into the classroom, noticing all the talking from within, "If you're here to socialise then get out." His voice was gruff, giving Mizuki an idea of his personality just from how he talked.

Mizuki stared at the man in confused awe. His hair was long, and very tangled, along with that, he had a layered scarf around his neck.

"It took you all 8 seconds to quiet down. Time is a precious resource. You lot aren't very rational, are you?"

'Our teacher?' Mizuki was more shocked by this revelation than the fact that this man was their teacher.

"I'm your homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa. Nice to meet you. Hurry up and put your gym clothes on. Meet me in the training grounds." Aizawa promptly turned and left, leaving the students in stunned shock before they hurried out toward the locker room.

Mizuki followed Toga, doing her best to ignore the fact that Iida and Sparky were staring her down.

They all changed quickly, with next to no time for conversation with the assignment they were given. Didn't stop Toga from trying to bite into Mizuki's shoulder, who promptly stopped her when the attempt was made.

When they all made it out there, Aizawa started, "Now that you're all here, let me start with saying that this is a test of your quirks."

"A test of our quirks?" A few people were shocked that this is what they'd be doing the first day.

"What about the entrance ceremony, or the guidance sessions?" Round faced girl asked.

"No time to waste on all that if you want to be a hero." Aizawa said lazily.

'Probably just didn't want to listen to the entrance ceremony because it would be boring.' Mizuki guessed. She agreed, in that she'd rather do this than listen to some guy, pro hero or not, prattle on about the future or whatever.

"U.A is known for its 'freestyle' education system. That applies to us teachers as well." Aizawa explained.

'So he just didn't want to.' Mizuki's theory was pretty much confirmed in her head.

"Soft-ball throwing, the fifty metre dash, endurance running, side-to-side steps, grip strength, standing long jump, seated toe touch and upper body training. You did all of these in middle school, yes? Your standard no-quirks-allowed gym tests." Aizawa narrated.

'They didn't let me because I was blind, but I'll stay quiet for now.' Mizuki couldn't help but comment in her head.

"This country still insists on prohibiting quirks when calculating the averages of those records. It's completely irrational. The department of education is procrastinating." Aizawa seemed to have switched to venting his qualms with the system, "Bakugo, how far could you throw a ball in middle school?"

"67 metres." Sparky responded. It seemed his actual name was Bakugo.

"Great. Now do it with your quirk." Aizawa threw a ball to Bakugo.

A gust of wind blew from Bakugo as threw the ball as hard as he could. A loud explosion echoing from his location, "DIE!"

'Oh, wow, I could feel the heat from that. Maybe I could manipulate it?' Mizuki wondered. She hadn't ever tried to manipulate the flames of an explosion before. Could be fun if she ever spars with Sparky.

"It's important for us to know our limits." Aizawa showed the students a device, of which Mizuki couldn't read.

"Himiko, what's it say?"

"Dunno, can't see it from here."

They got nowhere with that, but the rest of the class seemed excited at least. She didn't really get the hype though, she could feel where the ball had landed and it wasn't all that far.

The hype also seemed to die down as Aizawa piped up, "This looks like fun, does it? You want to be fully fledged heroes after just three years here, and you think it'll all be fun and games?" Aizawa's low growl of a voice made everyone feel like it was winter despite the warm sun just above them.

"How about this? The one with the lowest total score at the end of this test, will be judged hopeless, and will be expelled." His harsh tone had a sense of familiarity from the man, like he had done it before.

'That wouldn't be good if I wasn't already so awesome! Can't help but feel sorry for those without physically powerful quirks.' She could feel some of her classmates shaking out of fear, and for Toga, a lot of excitement.

Toga hadn't been allowed to run through the city like she used to while she was trying to find out what U.A knew about them, and couldn't wait to unleash some stress. Also because she wanted to show off a bit.

"The one with the lowest score will be expelled? It's only the first day! I mean, even if it wasn't, that's totally unfair!" Round faced girl complained.

"With all the chaos that natural disasters and villains bring, I'd say Japan is pretty unfair. It's the hero's job to correct that unfairness. If you thought the next three years here would be casual and fun, you'd be very wrong. Here at U.A we'll put you through the wringer."

"Just how I like it." Mizuki nodded as she announced her own determination with a few others joining her.

"Now that the demonstration is over, let's get into the real thing, shall we?"

The first event was the 50 metre dash. Mizuki made sure to pay extra special attention to where everyone was running so that she didn't completely go off the side of the track.

She quickly made a strategy, coming to terms with the fact that using earth here might be too slow. Or rather, using it the way she usually does.

Mizuki's turn came around, she hadn't really been paying attention to anyone else, but Toga also came up with her.

She smiled at Toga before readying herself.

A small beep was used as the signal, and as soon as she heard that, she launched herself forward by creating two lumps of earth under her feet, catapulting her forward. while in the air, she launched herself even faster with a large blast of air under her feet.

"Beep. 3.84 seconds." A machine beeped at her as she passed it by, following another when Toga rushed by, "Beep. 6.02 seconds."

"Aw, this is why I always lose chase." Toga said playfully.

The next test, Aizawa pulled grip strength testers from his "All-purpose" sleeping bag. With the grip strength test, Mizuki didn't even bother holding the strength tester, instead creating a rock arm to squeeze it for her.

Due to her lack of power from her having focused so much on control over the years, it wasn't as strong as a few of the others. Especially in comparison to Shoji, who had a grip strength of over 540 kilos. For reference, that is a metric ton of pressure.

The third event, standing long jump, proved easy enough. Just clearing the sandbox would give a "max" score, so that's what she did, launching herself over with a graceful flip for extra effect.

"Hitsuchi, keep the gloating for the mirror." Aizawa scolded.

Mizuki blushed slightly. She was trying to have fun, which she had forgotten that Aizawa hated.

The fourth test, side-to-side steps, wasn't hard. In fact, she didn't even come up with her idea, she just copied the really short kid, replacing the bouncy balls his quirk had with small explosions of air. It sounds worse than it is, as to her, it felt like a ping pong match where she was the ball, and the paddles were memory foam mattresses.

The fifth test was the throwing event. She was excited for this one, as it was the only one that she had time to actually plan for beforehand. Well, she had time for the others technically, but this was the only one she planned for.

Walking up to where she saw others stand Mizuki was quickly stopped by Aizawa, "Hitsuchi, you have to stay within the circle."

Mizuki looked down, already very aware that her 'sight' wouldn't change and then back at Aizawa.

"Have I mentioned I'm blind?" She revealed rather casually.

"What!?" A rather surprised yell came from the round faced boy, who hurriedly covered his mouth in embarrassment.

"Yes, I was made aware. The centre of the circle is right here." Aizawa walked forward and tapped the ground with his foot, where Mizuki walked with a beat of heat from her face.

To this day, she had no idea that other people could see it when you blush.

Raising the ground up from underneath her, she made the circle where she was supposed to remain within, rise up into the air. It wasn't a floating rock, just a pillar. She wasn't skilled enough to ride on top of rocks she was controlling yet.

'Can't use earth, because the balls seem to activate upon contact with the ground so... Next best thing, air!' Mizuki was trying to think of the best way to do this when Aizawa broke her out her thoughts.

"You're wasting time, Hitsuchi, hurry up!"

'Okay, improvised air cannon!' Her tongue stuck out to the side as she concentrated on trying to shape the air to her whim, something that came rather easy. Moments like these are when she's glad she focused on control.

"Wow, a funnel made of air! How ingenious!" A tall girl with a ponytail praised her, but Mizuki felt annoyed.

"It's an air cannon! Air funnel sounds lame!" She flipped the ball into the funnel and aimed it at the perfect angle. She thinks.

Without a sound, the ball was flung into the distance from atop her tower, and she promptly put the earth tower back into the ground to let the next person after her go.

She didn't bother to check the score that Aizawa scored, because she couldn't read it anyway.

"Is it true that you're blind?" The girl with horns asked excitedly. Strange considering her blindness wasn't all that much to gawk at. She was also surprised at how friendly she sounded, considering the only person she's talked to since getting here was Toga.

"Yeah, but my quirk's connection with the earth lets me sense seismic waves and vibrations through the earth. I can also sense how the air moves around things, but it's not as accurate as my seismic sense." Mizuki helpfully explained. She didn't much like being babied because she was blind, so she was sure to emphasise the fact that she could indeed see.

"If you can sense vibrations from the ground, couldn't you sense the vibrations in the air?" The round faced boy cut into the conversation, "Like, sound I mean. Because sound is just vibrations in the air." He clarified.

Mizuki didn't say a thing but merely tried to do so. Like a strange form of echolocation, she could sense the small vibrations through the air, and suddenly, it felt like something unlocked in her head. A wave of a new sense flooded her as she hurriedly tried to adapt to it.

"What the fuck!?" She exclaimed, surprising the round-faced boy.

Mizuki suddenly grabbed the round faced boy's face and brought it close to her own, "The hell is your name?" She sounded threatening with such an innocent question.

"I-Izuku Midoriya!" He stuttered as he tried to struggle from her grip.

"Thank you very much!" Mizuki yelled into his face, "I don't know how, but I can 'see' better than before. It's so weird, I can actually see your face." She moved his face around like she was inspecting it despite the fact that she could already 'see' the whole face regardless.

"Midoriya! It's your turn!" Aizawa called out and Midoriya nervously headed toward the circle.

"Hmm. Midoriya isn't doing too good." Mizuki heard Iida's analytical voice.

"Well, duh, he's a quirkless runt!" Sparky pointed out like it was obvious.

"Quirkless? So you haven't heard about what happened in the exam?"

Like usual, Mizuki tuned out the conversation in favour of looking over at the presence watching them from behind a building just behind them.

All Might, seeing he was caught, simply waved at her.

'He's probably just here to see how we're doing.' Mizuki guessed correctly, but not all of it.

When she turned her attention back, she watched as Midoriya's ball flew all of... 47 metres.

He seemed confused about the fact that his quirk hadn't activated, as was Mizuki when she heard his confusion.

"I erased it. It's completely irrational that the exam could let someone like you into the Hero Course." Aizawa completely insulted him, but Midoriya seemed preoccupied.

"He's the erasure hero! Eraserhead!"

'Wow, so creative Eraserhead-sensei.' Mizuki could hear the mocking claps within her own head, but did no such thing in reality.

Mizuki hadn't heard of him before, but she also hadn't heard of, like, every other hero. She knew Death Arms, Kamui Woods, and All Might, and that's because she's met all of them.

"You can't even control your quirk. There is no way someone will be there to save you if you incapacitate yourself again. Unlike a certain legend who recklessly saved over a thousand lives during a disaster with his life on the line, while you have the same recklessness, you'd be out after just saving just one. You can't become a hero with this quirk of yours." Aizawa blinked. The fact that Mizuki could sense that made her feel weird.

"You've got your quirk back. Let's just get this over with."

'Aw man. But he just helped me advance my quirk.' Mizuki already knew at this rate, based on what Iida said as she hasn't really been paying attention, he would get last.

Mizuki could hear every word that Midoriya said as he muttered to himself thanks to her new upgrade.

And with a large explosion of wind, Mizuki could feel his finger shatter.

She nearly threw up on the spot with how detailed she could feel the break-down was, it was horrifying and disgusting. Instead, she spat out words, "Holy fuck, his finger is shattered."

Mizuki also noticed the angry face on Sparky's face, and just as he was about to charge forward, a hand made of earth wrapped him up. Mizuki had enough time to understand how Bakugo's quirk worked, so she pinned his palms against his body, making it essentially impossible for him to escape unless he was stronger than she thought.

"Let me go! The fuck did you do that for creepy-eyed bitch!?" Bakugo yelled.

"What were you about to do, Sparky? You seemed awfully upset at the fact that Mutter-boy beat your score, if only barely."

"Mutter-boy?" Midoriya muttered out, trying to figure out how he got that nickname.

"Let him go, Hitsuchi." Aizawa's eyes were already directly on Bakugo, his quirk clearly activated as his eyes glowed.

Mizuki let go like requested and she walked over to Midoriya.

"Dumbass Mutter-boy. That thing is unsettlingly broken." Mizuki was surprised someone could have so little control over their quirk.

"Anybody got water? Preferably not tap water." Mizuki called out to the rest of her classmates, who all shook their heads.

"O' course no one has any, we were rushed here the second school started." Mizuki groaned.

"Fine, you're gonna have to deal with an earth cast until you can get to the Recover lady, or whatever."

Mizuki pulled some dirt out from the ground and moulded it perfectly around his finger, like it was made of clay, keeping the finger in place.

"Now don't go breaking other parts, I ain't that pleased to be doing this in the first place." Mizuki glared. Now that she understood how to do that properly as she could actually (somewhat) see what it looked like, it was pretty intimidating.

The next tests passed quickly with Mizuki trying to keep Toga from ripping off the poorly constructed rock cast to see his purple finger, as she said. She didn't know what purple looked like, but it must be different than what skin normally looked like for Toga to be so excited about it.

"Moving along, it's time for the test results." Aizawa gathered all of them together.

"Explaining the process of getting to your total is a waste of time, so I'll just show you all the final scores." Aizawa flicked the device in his hand forward, "Also, I was lying about expelling someone." He said so nonchalantly that it took a second for everyone to realise what he said.

'I don't think he was lying, but I don't know if heroes can control their heartbeat.' Mizuki narrowed her eyes at Aizawa, who had completely ignored the stare.

"It was a rational deception, to get all of you to try your very best." His smile was creepy.

'Do I smile like that? Is that why Toga called it spooky before?'

"WHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!?" The class exploded in shock, save for a few of the calmer.

"Of course it was a lie guys." The tall girl with a ponytail said.

"Aw, but it would have been funny." Toga blew a raspberry in disappointment.

"Anyway, we're done here. Your curriculum papers are in the classroom so make sure to get those before you leave." Aizawa turned to leave, but not before pulling a paper out of his sleeping bag.

'Is that thing an inventory?' For some reason, Mizuki could not sense the inside of the sleeping bag no matter how hard she tried. Well, she could a little bit, but it wasn't nearly comparable to the height of Aizawa.

"Oh right, Himiko, how'd I place?" She asked. She had seen Aizawa pull out the device, but had no idea what it said.

"Oh, I didn't look for your name, but I was 7th!"

"Good job! I'm proud of you!" Mizuki hugged Toga slightly before heading back to where she had committed the location of her class to memory.

The two headed home, talking about their day on the way. Toga seemed to have successfully creeped out everyone in class by making jokes about seeing what they look like with a broken bone.

"We should get some different blood for your quirk though. I don't think being able to only transform into me is gonna cut it."

"I asked for some blood suckers on my hero outfit, so I hope it goes well!" Toga exclaimed excitedly.

"Please don't tell me that's how you phrased it on the request form."

"Why? Is that bad?"

Mizuki merely sighed and continued forward.

'I'll deal with it later.' Like all of her problems, she shelved them for later.

Longer chapter. I started panicking that the chapter was going too long and swiftly realized that I don't give a fuck. So you better have enjoyed it, or I'll kill you.

This is also the last chapter for a couple of days because I want a break, so it's honestly better that it's long. I am taking a barely earned vacation! Have fun!
