The Town Behind the Waterfall

Lo and Squiggle walked through the treacherous torrents. Ground crumbled beneath them, horrible monsters attacked to try and end their adventure early. They had to just barely balance over pieces of ground that were as thin as tightropes. Sometimes all of the aforementioned problems at once.

Nonetheless, they made it. Lo could see a cave coming up ahead of them. It was blocked off by a thin layer of water falling from the mountain's peak above. "Well, I wasn't planning on getting my clothes too wet today. But, whatever. I'm sooo tired..."

Lo pushed through the waterfall, as it soaked into his and Squiggle's tuxedo and top hat. It bogged his hair down over his eyes, and he had to clear the wet hair out of his eyes before he could see.

When he did, he felt like he almost had a heart attack. It was... a town! There were, surprisingly, people walking around, going about their nighttime commutes. It was a small mountain town, overlooking a deep fall into a deep dark inlet. There were still a few lights that hadn't been put out yet, but for the most part, the town seemed asleep.

"Well, I think we just found our place," Lo yawned. Squiggle yawned, and then smacked his lips a little as he fell asleep on Lo's hat. It would seem Squiggle didn't need to worry about having a bed, because his friend's hat was just as if not more comfy. "Well, I guess I should find an inn."

Lo walked past the marketplace as lights went out around him. Lo didn't expect for there to be people here. Since there were, did they just not know about the treasure? Or maybe it HAD already been found. Nonetheless, Lo would continue. He had to, for the sake of adventure.

Lo was offered goods of mediums he had never seen. Food he had never eaten, books he had never read. Paintings he had never laid eyes on. He sadly had to turn them down. His meager allowance wasn't enough to buy any of it. Besides, he had plenty of stuff from home. He had paper to color and write on, food to eat, and even a few of his favorite books to read. And of course, he had Squiggle to keep him company.

Lo found an inn. It had a warm and cuddly feeling to it, so he figured he should stay the night there. He opened the door. It had bells that jingled upon it opening, like at a barber shop. When he walked in, a wave of warm air washed over him from the cozy fire in the fireplace. There was a slight yellow glow fighting back the darkness. An epic struggle between light and dark, ironically making the inn an even more inviting place to be.

There was a lady at the front desk reading a book. Lo could see the title read King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable. A big book he had never finished reading. "Umm, excuse me, miss?" Lo asked. The woman looked like she was startled. She looked up. She had panicked deep blue eyes like the ocean behind a pair of square glasses.

"Aah! Sorry, I didn't mean to doze off like that!" The woman exclaimed, straightening out her ruffled black dress and brown hair. "Sorry, I'm still getting used to this job. My name is Sonja, Sonja Olive! Welcome to the Olive Inn. How can I help you?"

"I'd like a room, please. Smallest one you've got," Lo replied, putting a handful of coins on the desk.

"Smallest?" Sonja asked. Lo's expression didn't falter. "Ah... I mean... whatever you say, sir!" Sonja got up and walked to the stairs. "Right this way."

Sonja walked up the stairs, and Lo followed. They walked past many numbered doors, until finally they reached room 412. "This will be your room for tonight. Thank you for your patronage!" Sonja whispered, not wanting to wake anyone up. She gave the keys to Lo, and then walked away.

After getting settled into the comfy bed, Lo pulled his flip-phone out of his backpack. He tried calling his mom, to let her know he made it through the day okay. He powered the phone on, and a dim light shined onto his eyes. It hurt a little.

He dialed his mom's number. He knew it by heart. RIIIING... RIIIIIIING...

"Hello, you've reached the voicemail of Calo Higgins," his mother's voice said, hushed by the low volume of the phone. Lo almost thought he was speaking directly to her, only to have his dreams crushed by the automated response. She was probably asleep. That or hard at work. "Please leave a message after the tone." Beeeeeep...

"Hey, mom," Lo spoke, leaving a message. "It's me, Lo! We made it to the island okay. We fought a few monsters, almost fell to our deaths a few times, and found this really cool town! I didn't even know there were people here. But... well you see, mom, there's actually something bothering me a little bit. Some mage named Winimum showed up, and told us someone named Lord Ommin and his army have already seized the treasure. I don't know if I should believe her or not." Lo gasped for air after talking so long. "Anyways, that's all I really have to say. Goodnight."
