The End That Never Even Started

Sushi sat frozen in disbelief, her mind reeling from the doctor's revelation. Pregnant? The word echoed in her thoughts, sending waves of shock and disbelief through her. She turned to the doctor, her eyes wide with astonishment.

"I... I'm pregnant?" she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor nodded, her expression compassionate yet firm. "Yes, Sushi. You have to thank your husband for this. If he hadn't brought you here when he did, things could have taken a very different turn." she confirmed gently and left the room.

A flood of emotions washed over Sushi as she processed the news. Joy mingled with apprehension, excitement tempered by uncertainty. She glanced down at her still-flat stomach, her heart overflowing with a newfound sense of wonder and awe.

she heard the door creak open, and June entered the room. Awkwardness hung heavy in the air between them, a palpable tension that neither knew how to break.

June approached her slowly, his footsteps hesitant as he made his way to her side. He took a seat beside her, the space between them filled with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.

"Are you okay?" June's voice broke the silence, his tone gentle yet tinged with apprehension. "Do you need anything else?"

Sushi met his gaze, she struggled to find the words to express the emotions that churned within her.

"Should I tell June about this? No, I shouldn't.

He's already struggling with having me in his life. Adding the news of a pregnancy would only make things worse. He might not be able to handle it, and I can't bear to see him suffer any more than he already has.

It's better if he never knows. I'll face this on my own, without burdening him with my troubles. I'll protect him from the pain of knowing, even if it means carrying this secret alone", she is thinking while looking at June's eyes ignoring his words.

"Sushi!! Are you listening?" June's voice broke through her reverie, his hand gently grasping her shoulder and shaking her out of her thoughts. Startled, Sushi blinked and refocused, meeting June's concerned gaze.

"Yeah, June, I'm here," she replied, her voice slightly distant as she shook off the remnants of her thoughts.

"Thank you," she added, as she returned to the present moment.

"Sushi, I..." June's voice trailed off, his words caught in his throat as he sat beside her on the bed, uncertainty etched on his face.

"Does my family know about this?" Sushi's voice cut through the silence, her eyes searching his for answers.

"No, I haven't told anyone. I didn't want them to worry," June responded softly, his gaze shifting away.

"Thank you," Sushi replied, her voice tinged with gratitude.

"Sushi, I..." June tried again, his hand reaching out to touch hers, seeking connection amidst the turmoil.

"June, I will sign..." Sushi's voice held a firm resolve, her words cutting through the tension in the room.

"What?" June's eyes widened in shock at her sudden declaration.

"I will sign the divorce papers, as you asked," Sushi's voice remained steady, her expression resolute.

June recoiled as if struck, his hands falling back to his sides as he stared at her in disbelief. The weight of her words hung heavy in the air, casting a shadow over their fragile connection.

And as June looked into Sushi's eyes, he saw the pain and sadness reflected there, mirroring his own.

The atmosphere in the room grew heavy with sorrow as Sushi's words hung in the air, his heart heavy with the weight of their impending conversation. His voice trembled with emotion as he searched for answers, his eyes pleading for understanding.

"You told me that you would never sign those papers. But why now?" June's voice wavered with uncertainty, his heart aching.

As he spoke, memories of their conversation from the night before flooded his mind, each word he had uttered now haunting him with regret.

"By chance, did my words from last night lead you to this decision?" June's voice faltered as he struggled to comprehend the sudden turn of events, his mind racing with questions and doubts.

But before he could finish, Sushi's voice cut through the silence, her words heavy with remorse.

"No, June," she interrupted, her voice tinged with sorrow.

"It's not about yesterday. It's true that I deceived you. Despite my desperation, I shouldn't have taken you for granted.

I'm not even in love with you."

He felt as though the ground had been ripped out from beneath him, leaving him suspended in a void of emptiness and despair.

"I dragged you into this mess, thinking only of my father's troubles," Sushi continued, her voice tinged with regret. "Last time, you assured me that he was never even in trouble."

A bitter taste filled June's mouth as he listened, the weight of her admission settling heavily upon him.

"And now," Sushi's voice faltered, her words laced with resignation, "even I don't see a point in keeping this marriage."

The finality of her words hung between them like a gulf, widening with each passing moment. June felt as though he were standing on the edge of a precipice, staring into the abyss of their broken relationship with no hope of salvation.

The bitter irony of it all was not lost on him – that a marriage built on lies and betrayal could come crashing down without even a glimmer of hope for redemption. It was as if their love had been doomed from the start, destined to wither and die under the weight of their own deception.

"You never loved me?", June's voice trembled with uncertainty as he spoke.

Sushi met his gaze, her eyes filled with a sadness. "No, June" she replied softly.

The love they had once shared had been nothing but a facade, a cruel illusion that had left them both adrift in a sea of broken promises and shattered dreams.

"I understand, Sushi. Don't you want to hear out my decision?" June asked, a glimmer of hope shining in his eyes despite the heaviness in his heart.

"I already know your answer, June. And one more thing," Sushi interjected softly, her voice tinged with resignation. "I will be leaving the country in two months. I've received admissions for my higher studies. So..."

June's heart sank at her words, the reality of their impending separation settling over him like a heavy fog.

"Since I am granting you a wish by signing the divorce papers," Sushi continued.

"Can you be My Falling Star and grant a wish for me? It may be my first and last wish too."

Devastation washed over June like a relentless tide, dragging him deeper into the abyss of despair with each passing moment. He could scarcely believe that this was happening, that the love he had never cherished and nurtured is now really falling apart.

Memories of their days together before marriage flooded his mind, each one a bittersweet reminder of the love they had shared and the happiness they had once known. But now, those memories felt like a cruel mockery, a reminder of everything he stood to lose.

With a heavy heart, June slowly nodded, his gaze fixed on Sushi as he awaited her request. His voice was barely a whisper as he asked, "What is it?" But deep down, he already knew that whatever she asked of him, he would grant it, no matter the cost.

"Can you forget everything about me until now and treat me as your wife for these next two months? My lies, my betrayals, everything you have known thus far," Sushi pleaded, her voice laden with sorrow and regret.

"If it's too difficult for you, even considering me as a new friend who has come to your house as a guest is acceptable.", She expressed.

June's heart ached at her words, the weight of her request pressing down on him like a heavy burden. But despite the pain, he nodded, his resolve firm.

With a heavy heart, June rose from his seat, his footsteps slow and hesitant as he made his way to the door. Each step felt like a burden, weighing him down with the weight of their shattered dreams and unspoken pain.

As June reached the doorway, he paused, his hand resting on the door frame as he fought to steady his trembling breath.

Sushi remained seated on the bed, her eyes downcast as tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision. She could feel the weight of their impending separation pressing down on her like a crushing weight, threatening to engulf her in a sea of sorrow and regret.

Neither of them spoke, the weight of their unspoken words hanging heavy in the air between them. And as June stepped out into the hallway, the sound of their quiet sobs mingled together, a poignant symphony of pain and longing that echoed through the empty corridors, a silent testament to the depth of their shared sorrow.
