‘‘What should I do now?’’ The tone of Michelle's voice, which was just above a whisper, was infused with an overwhelming sense of melancholy. ‘‘I can’t find it. I think I dropped it in the pool…’’

‘‘Are you sure about that…?’’ I asked with a raised brow.

‘‘I…’’ She shook her head frantically while muttering, ‘‘I don't know…’’

She took a few slow, long breaths, turned around, and then threw her bag down on the ground behind her. I was quick to grab her arm and pull her back from the edge of the pool before she could get any closer to the water.

‘‘What are you doing?’’ I warned. ‘‘Don't even think about jumping into the pool, Michelle!’’

She struggled, but I managed to pull her closer to me and spin her around so that she was facing me. I grabbed her shoulders firmly while she was trembling in my arms, most likely as a result of the feelings that were consuming her.

‘‘You don’t understand…’’ she said in a low voice. ‘‘I have to find it no matter what…’’
