Chapter 7

Three weeks later, Sarah is in the medicine den. She has been in labor since midnight and it is now lunchtime. Sarah moans in pain and rolls over on her side.

Rachel and Alexander each hold her hand and pepper kisses on her face. They wait for the medicine wolf to come in.

Jordan soon arrives and makes his way over to the trio. Hello. I understand that Sarah is in labor? Do you mind if I check you for dilation and effacement?

Sarah. Yes. I believe I am in active labor. And I don't mind at all.

Sarah opens her legs and  Jordan washes his hands and puts on gloves. He goes over to Sarah and inserts two fingers.

Jordan. You're 50% effaced and 3 cm dilated. By my calculations, you'll be ready to push around supper time. Would you like any pain medication or an epidural?

Sarah. No, thank you. Since I won't be giving birth for a while, can I walk around?

Jordan. Yes, but don't strain yourself. Do light activities, don't stress yourself, and don't pick up anything heavy. You can hold your kids, but that's about it. Anything heavier would cause complications with the birth.

Sarah. Ok, thank you.

Several hours later, Sarah has gone through several waves of pain as the contractions intensified. It is now supper time, and Sarah's cervix is fully effaced and dilated. She has been pushing for the last two hours. Four of the five had been born vaginally, but the last pup was stuck in the birth canal.

Jordan. It seems that you're going to need a C-section. The last pup is feet first and folded over on itself. It can't pass through the birth canal properly.

Sarah. Ok. As long as this pup is safe and healthy, I don't care how it is born.

Jordan. Ok, Your Majesty.

Jordan helps Sarah lay on her back and he sets to work on performing the C-section. He gives Sarah an epidural, sets up a partition in front of Sarah, and performs a C-section. Jordan safely delivers the last pup and sets it with the others.

Jordan stitches Sarah back up and then cleans the pups. He also weighs measures and checks them for health.

Jordan. All five pups are healthy with a weight of 4 lbs exactly and a length of 5 inches.

Sarah. Thank you.

Jordan smiles and nods, leaving the parents with their new pups. Rachel, Sarah, and Alexander clean the pups further and find out that they have two girls and four boys. They now have four girls and four boys total.

The older siblings are brought in to see their newborn siblings and everyone smiles and watches the pups as they feed from Sarah.

The newborns are named Elizabeth, Julia, Peter, William, Henry, and Johnathan.

26 weeks later, Alice, Madison, and Michael are 1 year old and Elizabeth, Julia, Peter, William, Henry, and Johnathan are 6 months old. The eight pups run around and play with each other and the triplets take care of their younger siblings. Everyone is happy, and even though the quintuplets have red fur, Sarah, Alexander, Rachel, and the triplets all love them very much, and no one would change that for the world.
