My first time meeting with a mage

I'm 4 years old now, i don't have any real task safe for helping around the house or when my father is farming. I just follow my brothers, they show me what to do. But they are really naughty children and like their pranks. I've begun to go and learn reading from the Mayor's wife. All the children come by when she start her lessons. Adults are complaining that if we don't learn we will be made fun off when we go to a bigger town.

I'm at the mayor house when i hear a few people talking.

'Mayor, we can't go on, there have been far too few rainy days the harvest will be extremely bad this year….'

'I have made an arrangement to get a magician at the guild. You know how it works. We just have to wait a bit before the magician will come and make water for the farms.' The mayor was full of respect when he said a magician would come.

I went to Klein and asked him 'Are magicians coming often when there are problems with the harvest ?'

'No way. Magicians are super rare! They have amazing power. I heard grandpa say that strong ones can make it rain, but the last time the old guy that came could just make one small bucket full of water before he had to rest…'

I hope the one coming could teach me at least how to cast a spell. I'll prepare to beg with my puppy eyes to try and get something out of this.

A bit later i saw Clark get beaten by Sarah. 'Why are you hitting big bro, Sarah ?'

'That stupid bro of yours said he want to leave the village and be an Adventurer !' She sounds kind of really pissed.

'Is it bad ?' I asked in a small voice. 'Of course, it's bad ! Adventurers do dangerous things and a lot of them die or end up crippled. And that stupid Clark said he would save a girl from bandits before marrying her like your Grandpa !' She's all red, furiously blushing. 'Is it because he's talking of marrying someone else that it's getting to her head ?' Even though when Klein was muttering, she somehow heard him. She became all pale and got a riding whip in her hand. The look in her eyes was freaking both of us out while the dense Clark said ' It would be even better if you three were part of my adventurer group ! '

That seemed to interest Sarah more than whiping Klein, thank you dense Clark, you saved us.

As for big bro dreams, well, I think he'll need some luck because Sarah will jump him as soon as they are both adults. Klein said he too want to be an Adventurer. As for me ? I'm way too young to consider that. It is a dangerous occupation but this world is pretty dangerous with vagrant Magic beast that wipe out a village at random or bandits group burning and looting a small town. We often hear of such a thing. I do realise that i won't be able to survive if i'm not ready for the worst. I've already begun to train myself by running in places with obstacles. I think i heard in my previous life that the one that run away the fastest survive longer in the end. So, i'm just running at any time of the day, once i'm done helping to do the chores.

A week later, the mage came.

Everyone was happy and full of worship until they saw the blue hair and short size of the mage. I heard on of the adult saying 'it's a demon!'. Father and mother are not looking well when they heard that. Grandpa checked his crossbow like he was preparing for a hunt.

The mayor went to the mage and asked in a trembling voice 'Are you the one that agreed to our request ?'

She answered 'Yes, I am Roxy Migurdia. I'll make rain fall on your lands. Please tell me where you want it to fall.'

The mayor was surprised when he heard her tell him she could make rain. The crowd was muttering amongst themselves. Some were afraid, others were in a wait and see attitude and a minority were looking down on her. I decided to go for it. And made a run for her.

'Hello Miss ! Can you teach me magic ?' Puppy eye power to the max !!!

'no' is all i got in a very curt answer. She looked annoyed. I fake some tears like all children can do and send another puppy eyes attack. And with the crowd around looking weirdly at the situation she was feeling some pressure. Time to bargain. 'if you teach me a spell, i'll ask mommy to make you some sweets!' She is getting a bit more approachable. Her gaze especially became far less piercing. 'Show me the sweets first' she said near my ear.

Caught her !!!

I made a run to Mother and told her 'make her the best sweets you can mom !' She looked at me worryingly and said ' are you alright she didn't do anything to you ?' She was looking at my body. 'i whispered to her 'She teach me magic if you make some sweets !'

'No way a mage would teach for sweets, they all ask for lot of money and we don't have anywhere near enough' Mother was dismissing me.

I looked straight at her eyes 'make it! it might be my only chance of learning a spell!'

Father looked over me before saying 'Might as well try it' And Grandpa said 'no worry i'll keep my crossbow ready just in case...'

I think he might've some beef with demons in the past to act in such a way.

The day after, Roxy had watered the differents fields. I went to her ' Good morning !'

She looked at me for a bit before answering 'good morning'

'My mom is baking the sweets, they'll be ready in the afternoon' 'Oh that's good, i really need something sweet after all that work' She looks a bit more invigorated compared to before.

'Say Roxy, where did you come from ?' Puppy eye power!! 'I'm from the Demon continent and I left to travel the world' 'Wow, the world! What job did you do previously ?' I'm trying to wring some info out of her. 'Well, Adventurers take on requests at the Guilds. There is a guild in some of the bigger town of each countries. So i've been doing subjugation requests, gathering material, escort request and i even went in a Labyrinth once.' She was recalling.

'Have you ever taught for a request ?' I'm going straight for it. 'No but i did see such a request before i took this one, maybe i'll take it up as the rewards is good and the requirements are too hard for others' She told me. 'What do you mean by requirement ?'

'You need to be an Advanced Mage at the very least. You don't see them wandering often and the Adventurers of that level are part of some groups so they can't accept a requests for only one person when it could take a long time teaching.' She explained.

I kind of understand that. 'what will you teach me then ?'

'i'll teach you a basic spell and we will see if you can learn it. Not everyone have talent for magic and even less people have enough magic reserve to be able to do much more than cast a basic spell once per hour…' she looked a bit sorry while looking at me. Does she think i'll be a dud ? Well, i can't say without trying first. 'that must mean you're amazing since you can call the rain !' She blushed a bit. probably embarrassed at a child saying that calling the rain is amazing when she is a saint ranked magician.

We spent the rest of morning talking about her Adventurer life.
