Ch-2 Olympic Base

At the Olympic HQis at the base of the mountain of the same name, which had been practically hollowed out for the massive network of tunnels that act as Labs and testing rooms, while massive complexes jutted out of the mountain for living, recreational, and manufacturing areas making the entire base self sufficient in food production.

At the foot of the massive complex ran the Elwha River where supply currently ran as the new underground rail connection was being dug with the new Construction vehicles.

At the river dock a group of three river boats docked and began unloading 100s of men and their gear; these men are the first group of the 157th Infantry Division.

Led by Felix Sparks who had just been informed of the Portal situation and began organizing the first of many orientations for the Olympic base.

"All right everybody stay close! This will be our new home for the foreseeable future. Your squad leader has maps to your bunks, go drop your gear and report to the main meeting hall for a full briefing tonight." Felix said through a bullhorn to his men for the third time as all of them had been informed on the boat ride.

The wave of men began walking to the massive opening doors where cargo elevators sat ready to move large groups to the barracks area, Felix waited for the men to get moving while Mr.Pendragon wheeled up beside him.

"Commander Sparks, it will take some time for your men to settle, would you like a tour before you are stuck answering questions all night." Pendragon, the mind behind all this madness and certified genius said motion to a nearby jeep.

"Gladly I'd like to get an idea of what I'll be protecting Sir." Letting out a whistle Felix called over Coldfoot his Major to join them.

Coldfoot, a massive native man, walked through the crowd which parted around him, Coldfoot joined the two and entered the jeep which much to their surprise was very quiet as it drove around to the side of the base.

As young scientists, one of the many who worked in the facility drove Pendragon began to give a tour of the base, "First this is a prototype electric Jeep designed for internal use as with the scale of this facility and its continued expansion we have had to develop internal transportation."

Pulling around to the side of the mountain a large hole was being cut out of the mountain side as massive construction vehicles cleared dirt and stone.

"This is the future rail yard and town as with your men's families moving to the area new construction is needed, this also connects to the internal trams and people movers for the main base." Pulling into the construction area the young driver heads for the hole in the mountain, where a tram has already been stopped for the jeep to driven onto a cargo car.

"This is one of the internal trams, a cargo varent we order tons of metals and goods to be used in the manufacturing plants along the mountain. This is the easiest way of moving goods and people all over the base, your men are being loaded onto their own right now." The ramp to the tram raises and begins heading deeper into the mountain in a clockwise spiral.

"The Olympic base is divided into three distinct levels; the first is the warehouse and power generation." The tram slows and turns off into an area labeled storage, the place is divided by the needs of the material stored.

Climate controlled for food, medicine and other perishables, or just plain storage for metals and construction materials.

Arthur turns in his seat to address the two soldiers, "Any researcher can order something from the warehouse, it is processed via a machine which will have a tram come and retrieve it from the warehouse, this also applies to the manufacturing areas."

The Tram goes into a small rail yard and off to the side they see another sign, this one labeled [Power/Nuclear RADIATION].

"I'm assuming you know about the bombs dropped on Japan, these are power plants based on the same technology we won't be entering that area." The two men are very happy to avoid that place watch instead as their car is connected to a different tram and moved up to another floor.

"Now we begin the internal and external part of the base; Internally this houses Labs and testing ranges for our technology from power armor to hand grenades, on the side of the mountain we have the manufacturing areas where anything from radios to mechs are being built." The labs were state of the art filled with early computers clicking gathering data and storing in massive data banks in the warehouse areas.

Stopping at a tram stops and lets the three men disembark to the labs marked biology, "We're making a small stop here."

The biology department used to be the quietest of the labs during the war mostly focusing on exponential medicine but with most of the Portal Events sending animals and plants to Earth they have been in overdrive studying what has been found.

The head of the Department one Rachel Carson, a woman who is the leader in her field of Marine Biology who is currently performing a dissection on the Tylosaurus.

"That is a dinosaur….."Felix said as a man who grew up in Arizona he had seen fossils being displayed all over the state but this thing was massive 50 feet long big enough for the Doctor to have half her body inside the thing who upon hearing our entrance exited the chamber.

"Ah, afternoon Director and this must be our new Military liaison." She didn't give him a dirty look but she was less than pleased about the influx of military oversight.

Arthur raised his hand to stop her before her tirade of questions began, "I'll explain more tonight at the orientation Dr.Carson, I know my call was light on detail but our mission has changed. Now what can you tell me of the creature you have been dissecting."Said Hoping to change the subject.

She gave him a look that said she wanted more information but her love of biology won, "It's a dinosaur a Tylosaurus late in its life from what we could gather as scar tissue covers most of its body, its stomach (she waves at the various glass jars in the room) was filled mostly extinct fish species but the most interesting is this." She said and lifted a skull half digested.

"This is a Pterodactyl skull, which in itself is interesting but look at this is covered in feathers! This changes a number of theories and look at the colors." The plumage on the skull was filled with a rainbow of bright colors that they had only seen in tropical birds. "Now I just need to publish these findings which I doubt the government will let me." The Doctor said, giving Arthur a hard look who just raises his hands in defense.

"Things change Dr.Carlson, but how things are going all this will have to go public eventually, I'll explain tonight but I need to finish the tour." Arthur said and wheeled back to the Tram and up to the last area the living quarters.

"This is the living quarters for all the staff including your men, and I think you'll find them to be quite nice." The living area is divided into internal and external. The internal is for the staff who are single or their families do not live on base living in two person apartments that surround a park.

"Your men will stay here for now but with the town being built at the foot of the mountain I expect some of the men to have their families move in. While the officers and department heads will be staying on the outside of the mountain." On the outside of the mountain looking like jutting monoliths these are the officers and departments headed home, designed by Arthur himself they are far more advanced than any home in the world as they have color tvs, computers, and even wireless telephones.

"This is where I leave you. I have my own preparations for the orientation. There are manuals for all the appliances in the home on the kitchen table. See you tonight." Arthur says leaving the two men to figure out their high tech homes.

————————-

"Those are what we call portal events, the most recent should give all an idea of how dangerous these events can be." As Arthur said this an assistant put another slide on the overhead protector showing a picture from the USS Aaron Ward where the men had strung up the Tylosaurus like a whale.

The auditorium was suddenly filled with murmures and a lot of smug smiles from the biology department who was for once ahead of the rest of the SSR team.

"That is your new mission, we are to study the portal device and develop countermeasures to stop these incursions from occurring. During this time we are to contain any events worth the help of the 157th Regiment who will be using our prototype weapons and armor."

The assistant then began flipping through some for the more interesting tech: exoskeletons, light and heavy mechs, and even VTOL aircraft.

This got the attention of the soldiers who whopped and cheered at the chance of using this tech, "Yes, yes, some of you will be receiving additional training in explosives, heavy weapons, pilot training, and even mech use." Giving the men some time to calm down Arthur mentally prepares himself for the part that many may not like.

"Lastly we will eventually be mounting expeditions through the Gate when we fix all the mistakes the Nazis made." The crowd didn't devolve into complaints and jeers but he could tell none were happy with the idea, hell who wanted to go and fight dinosaurs.

"Many of you wonder why, this is why." And the final part of the presentation began,"This one is a section of video recovered from the Nazi lab that developed the Gate."

The first part of the video shows scientists moving around a large room with the gate in the center, a countdown began and at one the gate flashed to life.

In the center it showed flashes of different locations from the Wolfenstein dimension, Nazi flags waved over DC men and women shot down like dogs in the street, the crowd gasped in horror and the portal in the video began to destabilize.

Just as quickly it came to life it stopped and a bright flash of light happened again then the video cut, the final slide was then shown a single picture of some of the Nazi scientists being loaded up into a Soviet truck.

Arthur waited and let the crowd calm and come to terms with the situation. "That was what I believe to be a dimension where the Nazis won the war... how I'm more sure but I believe they were using advanced technology, what disturbs me more is the next photo as the Soviets have captured the scientists that survived the failed experiment. We expect they will be conducting experiments of their own within the year and believe they are developing nuclear weapons of their own." The crowd was deathly silent now as they understood the gravity of the situation.

"Assignment and orders will be announced within the week, Department heads expect some weird tech to be coming your way. Soldiers of the 157th you will be getting your orders soon as well within the weeks new training courses and conditioning.

Those of you who want your family to move out here the new town construction will be down within the next two months so make calls and arrangements as needed, now go get some rest we have some work ahead of us."

The crowd slowly dissipates and the department heads stay, including Commander Spark, "Director Pendragon, I have some requests to keep the men occupied while we figure things out. These men have been in constant combat and rough conditions for the past two years, so they need to keep busy or we will have issues from what I've heard from the guys in Germany who have had problems with men going AWOL." Arthur nodded and turned to the material studies department head Johan. "Johan? You and your department take hikes quite often in the area. Got any ideas for trails the men can hike, and is the range ready?"

Johan, a rather built man who had the nickname of Viking for his Swedish ancestry, "I have a couple trails Director to a number of look outs that would be good for in my opinion guard posts to overlook the river towards Elwha also the range is ready so feel free to use it as you see fit Comander." I turned to Felix who was nodding along and pulled a small notebook out of his jacket pocket.

"If the new gear is ready, Director, I'd like to have the men clear the trails and start work on making roads to the lookout. If they are as good as Department Head Johan recommended we will build look outs and defensive positions." Frank said, giving the Swede a nod.

"I'll send some of the engineers to show your men how to use the new equipment your men will be equipped with, they should be ready for a lot of classes on their gear." Arthur told Felix with a smile on my face, and began wheeling himself to the tram, "Get some sleep everyone, we have more meetings in the morning!" Arthur says as he exits the auditorium while the rest of the department heads introduce themselves to Felix.
