A Brand New Day

It's 7:30 am and the sun was shining so bright that I could avoid but open my eyes, stretched a bit, and lied down again. This has been quite a habit of mine already ever since my classes were scheduled later in the day.

The moment I woke up, I was thinking of Sophia. I still remember the day I first saw her. It was in third-year high school during a school event. She was part of a band while I was in the audience watching the performances.

I took out my laptop from my backpack and looked for the video of her that I took during that time. I still couldn't believe that it's been about four years since I first laid my eyes on her.

Being in the same university as she now feels so unreal but seeing her up close is more surreal. She looks really beautiful and has a really nice personality. She even has my number now, what a lucky life I'm living.

"Should I message her or not"? I asked myself

I mustered up all my courage just to type one message to her.

Sophia.

Hi. It's David. It was nice meeting you yesterday. I hope we could spend time again soon. I would like to get to know you more.

David.

Sent. What did I just do? Is she going to reply or not? I'll just hope for the best.

A few minutes later, I received a reply from Sophia

David.

Hi. It was nice meeting you too. We should. How about this lunch? I really want to get to know you even more.

Sophia.

What?! She's inviting me to have lunch with her? Can't believe it. I better get dressed well today.

I immediately put my laptop aside, got off my bed, and ran to the bathroom to get changed.

After taking a bath, I wore a white short-sleeve collared shirt, a black sweatshirt, blue jeans, and the white sneakers my sister bought me. I also fixed my hair and grabbed my backpack then went down to the dining room.

When I got down, Mom was already finished preparing breakfast. Dad is most probably still sleeping since he is really tired after a whole month of work.

"Morning, Mom". I said hugging Mom

"Morning, David. You look really nice today". Mom said

"Thank you". I said

"Is there something going on today? You don't usually dress up during regular school days". Mom said

"Remember the girl I've been telling you about. The one I saw in third-year high school, Sophia Rivera. She invited me for lunch today. I wanted to get to know her and she wanted to do the same too". I said

"Really?! You could have done the first move, son. You should have been the one to invite her for lunch. So, you should pay for today even if she insists not to". Mom said

"I will". I said

"That's my son". Mom said

While having breakfast, Mom suddenly gave me a box filled with red velvet crinkles.

"Mom, what's this for"? I asked

"I made some for your sister last night and there were extra so why not give this to Sophia. She might appreciate it". Mom said

"Thanks, Mom". I sad unhesitantly

After breakfast, I put the cookie box in my backpack then closed it.

"Mom, is there anything you need me to do"? I asked

"Nope. What time are you heading to school today"? Mom asked

"Maybe at 9:45. My first class won't start till 10:30". I said

"That's like 40 minutes from now. You should take a rest. Want coffee"? Mom asked

"I'd love one. You should join me, Mom". I said

Mom made two cups of coffee for both of us. We sat down in the living room and spent time chatting about random things.

40 minutes later, I finished my coffee then went on my way to school.

When I got to school, I saw a familiar car arriving too. I've seen it before in high school. I wonder who's driving it now.

I waited to see who was driving the car and I saw Sophia and Karina coming out of the car.

"Sophia"! I said

"David! Didn't expect to see you here". She said

"Yeah. Just arrive here about a minute ago. Your car looks familiar to me". I said

"Really?! How so"? She asked

"I've seen it back in high school. We actually went to the same high school before and I've seen your dad bring you to school in that car a lot before". I said

"I remember. You were in the classroom beside mine. I always liked reading the campus newspaper before. You were the editor-in-chief during that time, right"? She asked

"Yeah, I was. Glad you liked it". I said

"I love it especially the literary sections". She said

The literary section? That's the section I focused a lot on since I wrote a lot of poems there. They were about her.

"Oh, it was really nice. I enjoyed reading it myself". I said

"Who wouldn't? The poems there were really amazing and well-written". She said

She surely read them all. Then, I remembered the cookies Mom gave me. I need to give it to her now.

"By the way, I wanted to give this to you". I said giving her the box of cookies Mom made.

"I love chocolate chip cookies. Who made these"? She asked

"My Mom did. It's my sister's favorite cookies as well so Mom made a lot and I thought of giving you some". I said

"Thank you so much. We have to head to our first class now. See you lunchtime"? She said

"Of course". I said

"Thanks for the cookies". She said

She loves it! I feel so happy to see her beautiful smile. I'm glad she likes it as much as my sister does.

So, I headed to my first class of the day. On my way there, I noticed that Sophia's classroom was two rooms away from mine.

What's with today? Everything seems to fall in place although I didn't expect anything. Today's going to be great.

12:00 noon.

My first class ended just in time for lunchtime and I'm heading my way out to see Sophia. I want to treat her this time. Her class ends in 30 minutes and I still have a lot of time before my first class which is at 2:30 pm.

I called the Japanese restaurant I like eating at near the university to book a reservation.

After calling, I messaged Sophia that I'm treating her and Karina for lunch today. They actually agreed to it.

I sent her the address before going ahead to wait for them there to make sure they don't get lost.

45 minutes later...

They arrived at the restaurant and I raised my hand to see them. They saw me and came near me, then sat down on the couch.

"David! It's nice here. How did you discover this place"? She asked

"Oh, a friend of mine recommended me to visit this place about a year ago and I liked it the moment I first came here. So I ate here whenever I could". I said

"This place is lit. Karina and I love eating Japanese food. Finally, found a new restaurant to visit". She said

"The food here is really good. Feel free to order. It's my treat, so go ahead". I said

So we ordered our food and we're finally excited to eat Japanese food in a really nice place.

After ordering, we were just chatting while taking photos of the restaurant to post later.

"So, I'm really curious, why did you choose to study fashion design when your parents are both in the field of business". I asked

"Well honestly, I wanted to be in this field and my parents were very supportive of it. Since I was young, my parents supported me in everything I want to do and taught me about life and business as well. They always tell me to choose the path I want because it is my decision to make". She said

She's lucky to have very supportive parents who are raising her to become the woman she is today. Seeing her fashion-related posts online really makes me realize how happy she is being in this field.

"That's amazing. The same goes for me. My parents were very supportive of me entering the entertainment industry just like them and my sister. Since I was young, my parents let me join many events in order to learn about this passion of mine". I said

"I am actually interested in the entertainment industry as well. I've also wanted to become a lifestyle magazine writer but I thought that getting into fashion design would get me a much better life". She said

"You can still make it happen even with that job. You might be able to help people who might need advice or inspiration in fashion, maybe". I said

"That's true though. Hope I achieve that one day". She said

"You will. I believe you". I said

I can't believe I just motivated her to go for something I didn't know she wanted to do also. I just want her to be happy at least.

Chatting with her is very fun and it really gives me the energy to go on with the day.

After about two hours of chatting, we went back to school to attend our respective classes.

After my class, I immediately went home since everyone is home and we can have dinner together again.

At home...

I just got home and I went straight to my room and got changed before going down to have dinner.

I put on a white shirt and basketball shorts then went down to the living room and saw Mom and Dad already having dinner.

"Hi, Mom. Dad". I said

"Oh, David, come and have dinner with us". Mom said

I joined them at the table and got my food then we continued our conversation.

After dinner and the fun conversation, I never thought that my parents actually do know me more than I know myself. They have been the people who changed and raised me to be a better version of myself.

After washing the dishes, I went up to my room and took out my phone and earphones then laid down on my bed. I can't stop smiling after what happened today.

Sophia makes me very happy. Just seeing her smile makes me feel better when I'm sad. I barely talked to her but hearing her voice makes me smile. I feel so energized whenever I think of her.

At that moment, I thought of working on some backlogs from the last meeting of the school publication. It's been a few weeks since I last did some work on it.

I went to my study table, took out some pens and paper, as well as my laptop and headphones. I kept telling myself that I need to write some since I've barely contributed any written works these past months.

A few hours later, I am still staring at my laptop, I've barely written anything since I don't feel inspired to write anything at all. I wore my headphones and played some songs from my phone.

"Why can't I write anything? There must be something in my mind that I could write about".

"Wait... I have an idea. Since I've been thinking about Sophia lately, I should write something about her".

When I came up with that idea, ideas suddenly started flowing and I was able to write more than I expected.

Half-past midnight, I finally finished almost an entire collection of works. I am so happy about the progress I've made.

When I laid on my bed, I stared at the ceiling and smiled so widely.

"Thank you so much, Sophia. Because of you, I could get back to writing again. I hope that when these works get published, you are the reason behind these works. Thank you so much, really".

For her to read all this, I have to make sure these go out
