Sleep and never wake up

"Hello," Alex said breathlessly.

Declan frowned. "Why do you sound so breathless? What are you doing?"

Alex chuckled. "I am doing some exercise inside."

Declan's frown turned to a smile. "I had no idea you had a gym at home."

"I have one of the best gym instructors. Any problem?" Alex asked.

Declan didn't want to disturb him with his activities. "I wanted a drinking buddy, but I can tell you are very busy. I will call Chris."

"Okay," Alex said, hanging up.

His conversation with Chris was somehow similar. Chris was too busy to go drinking with him. It was just him alone. He picked up the bottle of whiskey and placed it on his table. He was going to relax for a day. He wasn't going to think about his problems for now. He swallowed the drink in the cup and sighed. It was no fun when he was drinking alone.

He glanced at his clock. It was already 10 p.m. Maybe all he needed was the comfort of his own house. He stood up, picked up his car key, and moved toward his elevator. Everywhere was silent; all the workers had gone home. It was just him. Sometimes he felt as if something was missing in his life, but what could it be? He already had almost all he needed. His business was a success. He had girls whenever he needed them, but the sense of fulfillment was missing. That was one of the reasons he kept researching. He wanted to fill the gap that he felt was missing.

...

Mia had changed out of her heels and put on something more comfortable, something that would make following a man easier without getting caught. She ran out of the room, following the stairs instead of waiting for the next elevator.

The building was silent, and the cold breeze kissed her skin, making her regret not putting on something warmer than her sleeveless dress. She ran towards the garage and observed that Jack's car had already left. She ran to her car and drove off in the direction of his office. She wasn't sure if that was where he was going to be, but that was where he had told her he was going to be. She was going to give it a try.

Mia's gaze moved around, watching out for her husband's car. She had always been careful not to drive past the speed limit, but at that moment, she didn't care for that. One would have thought she was in an illegal car race where she was about to win a huge amount of money. The cars beside her honked, but she ignored them, pressing her foot on the accelerator. Her heart acceleration was in alignment with her car's. She hoped she was wrong and he was truly going to the office.

Mia had given up a lot for the sake of her relationship with Jack. She had tried to make their relationship work, but all she got in return was him deceiving her. She pushed the accelerator as she remembered the voice of the woman screaming in her bedroom. She felt a tear drop on her hand but held the steering wheel tighter. She wasn't going to give up. She continued, almost losing hope that there was no way she was going to see Jack until she saw a white car that looked familiar to her.

Mia squinted her eyes and moved slowly behind the car. She knew it was her husband's car. She let out a relieved sigh and smiled. He was truly just going to the office. What was she thinking, following after him? Well, it wouldn't be a bad idea to surprise him at his office. If he couldn't come home because of work, she wouldn't mind meeting him at his workplace.

Mia continued driving slowly behind her husband and put on some music to calm her beating heart. The realization that Jack wasn't doing anything to harm their marriage made her heart calm down a bit. She smiled.

For a few minutes, she kept on following Jack's trail until he passed his office. Mia frowned and glanced in the direction of the building she knew as her husband's office. The publishing house had been in the family for years, so it was impossible that she wouldn't recognize it. What was going on?

Her husband continued driving until he parked in front of a well-known eatery. Mia also parked but stayed in the car. Jack came out of the car, stood by it, and started making calls.

Mia's frown turned into a scowl. What was going on? Was he meeting his business partner at an eatery instead of his office?

It didn't take long for Mia to figure out what was happening. A car stopped in front of the eatery, and a young lady came out. Mia didn't need to move closer to know who it was. It was a body she had been familiar with. A body she had played with, slept beside, held when it shook with tears, and recently, a body that helped her complete her face makeup to look good for her husband.

Mia gasped and watched silently. Beth walked up to Jack and kissed him on the lips. Mia watched open-mouthed as her body pressed close to her husband. Jack's hand held her steadily.

Tears dropped from her eyes as she watched them. Instead of moving back inside the restaurant as she anticipated, they entered the car and drove off. Mia didn't know when she followed them. Her watery eyes made it difficult for her to concentrate on the road. Everything was blurry, and she could hardly see her husband's car. She shook her head and followed until her husband drove to a hotel.

She parked her car outside the hotel and walked absentmindedly towards them.

Beth leaned on Jack, smiling like a high school girl who just sneaked out to meet her crush. Mia badly wanted to move closer to them and tear them apart with all her might. Her eyes didn't leave her husband as she tried crossing the road.

She had no idea what happened next, just that she flew and ended up on the floor. She tried to keep her eyes open, but she couldn't. All she wanted to do at that moment was sleep.

Sleep and never wake up.
