She was married

Who knew what sort of questions they would ask if he said he was visiting Mia? Thankfully, the hospital was busy enough that no one noticed when he walked in. He headed towards the room he had left the previous night. His hand was on the door to Mia's room when he heard voices inside. The soft air carried the sound to him, and he shivered.

"You know what, Jack? I want a divorce," a woman's voice said.

He frowned. Divorce? Was she married? He hadn't noticed if she wore a ring the previous night. But the fact that she was married deepened the frown on his face. For some reason, he didn't like to think of her as a married woman.

He turned, ready to leave when he heard another voice. "You must be joking if you think I will do that. I told you, Mia, there was nothing going on between Beth and me." The voice was deep and louder than Mia's. He imagined her cowering from the intensity of that voice. Would she be okay?

The thought that her husband might be cheating took up residence in his head. Was that the reason she had run onto the road towards oncoming cars? Was her husband worth it? The thought didn't sit well with him, and he wondered if that was why she had tried to end her own life.

His mind spiraled, jumping to different conclusions with her as the main character.

"Jack, I don't want to see you," he heard her strained voice again. She wasn't supposed to be making such noise after going through what she had the previous night.

Yet, it seemed like too much of a private matter to involve himself in. She was married to the man, so she should be able to handle him.

He turned and moved away from her room, his head spinning. He picked up his phone when it rang, annoyed. "Did you find Bennett?"

"Yes, I have, sir," Stan replied. "I'm coming back with him to the office."

"Good."

He took long strides, ignoring everyone and focusing on his location. Why did she have to be married? He shook his head. The best thing was to forget about her and focus on his work. But with every step he took, he couldn't stop thinking about her. He wondered if her wounds were healing. Had the wound on her arm to her leg improved?

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and drove to his office. His anger radiated from him, and everyone decided it was better to ignore him like the fourth plague. He stormed into his office and picked up a bottle of alcohol. At this rate, he was going to become an addict.

A knock on his door brought a smile to his face. Finally, something interesting. Stan walked in, dragging a battered Bennett behind him. Bennett's lips were split, and he was bleeding from the side of his head.

Declan stood up and walked towards him like a predator that had just caught his prey. He nodded at Stan, who released Bennett and stood close to the door. Declan didn't usually do things like this in his office, but he was going to set an example for Bennett.
