chapter 1

Evita's pov

Mom hurry up, it's about to rain'

I heard my brother call for my mom. She had asked him to drive her to the supermarket since my dad disagreed to because he was doing something 'important' i.e. watching the news. I walked over to the window and saw it was getting cloudy.

'It's about to rain, for the 100th time today' I murmured and my stomach growled 'great, and I'm hungry, this day couldn't get any worse'. I groaned internally as I picked my phone and walk downstairs to get something to eat.

'Honey I think you should go tomorrow, there is a heavy storm coming' my dad said from the sitting room. I made my way over to the kitchen while going through my phone.

'Evita dear, where is your mom?' my dad asked

'She is still in her room dad' I answered without taking my eyes off my phone. I helped myself out with some cereal since I was too lazy to cook anything. While eating, I spotted Calvin by the door, busy with his phone. He looked very angry. Probably because mom is taking ages to come downstairs. Poor thing.

'Mom' my brother yelled louder this time. I laughed as I stood up from the dinning. I walked out of the kitchen and went back to my room. I decided to go for a walk. I picked up the jacket laying on my bed and left my room. I saw that the door to Lilly's room was slightly opened so I walked into eat. My mom gave birth to her 3 years ago. I walked over to her bed where she was sleeping. 'She looks so peaceful' I said smiling. I gave her a little kiss on the forehead and left the room. I went downstairs and headed for the door.

'And where do you think you are going?' I turned around to face my mom.

'I'm going out for a walk mom' I said while putting on my jacket.

'Ok, be back before seven and stay out of trouble' my mom said as she patted my brother on the shoulder. He picked up the car key and left the house, his shoulder slightly brushing mine. I looked back at him and shook my head, he's always so moody.

'Yes mom' I answered her and left. I saw her walk out of the house after me and into dad's car and they drove off. I proceeded to the park nearby as I sat on a bench, watching the children play, dogs running around and leaves dancing on trees. I tried to keep my brain blank. School has been really tough for me. I've been trying to keep my grades up but all my effort are in vain, they are going downhill real fast. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.

'I need to clear my mind' I said once again. I felt raindrop on my hair causing me to open my eyes. It was dark already and the park was empty. I must have zoned out again. I started to walk back home. I received a phone call from my best friend, Rosaline and we talked for a while but I had to hang up as it started to pour, heavily. 'Shit' I said as I begin to run. As I rounded the corner to our house, I spotted some cops at our door. They were talking to my dad. 'They were in an accident, and are currently in the hospital' I heard one of the cop say.

'Dad, what's happening?' I asked my dad who looked like has saw a ghost

'Honey, go get Lilly, your mom and brother are in the hospital'. I heard my dad say faintly. My heart stopped beating as my vision got blurry, I grabbed the door to regain my balance

'What?' apparently the day could get worse

Few minutes later we were in the hospital. My dad went over to the nurses at the reception while I stood with Lilly. My hands were shaking, I was dizzy, different thoughts running through my mind. I was pulled back to reality when I heard my dad's voice.

''Evita, let's go'' my dad said. I picked Lilly up and followed my dad into an elevator.

'Vy' Lilly said in a low voice

'Yes baby' I answered trying hard not to sound scared, but it wasn't working

'What's wrong with mommy?' she asked looking directly into my watery scared looking eyes. 'Nothing is wrong baby, we'll see mommy in a little while' I said to her with a small smile. I rested her head on my shoulders and looked at my dad. He looks really worried, and he has been silent the whole time. After what felt like forever, the elevator doors finally opened. My dad led us to the emergency room. We sat outside as the operation was still ongoing. After about an hour, the doctor came out.

'Doctor, what's going on? How is my wife and son?' my dad as while walking over to the doctor. I followed suit with Lilly in my arms.

' we are trying all we can, as it appears they were brought in late and are really in a critical condition, at this point, only a miracle can save them.' the doctor replied before leaving.

I felt my body turn cold, my heart beating erratically in my chest as tears begin to drop from my eyes.

'Vy is mommy going to be okay?' Lilly asked sobbing quietly

'Yes she will be okay' I don't know if I was assuring her or myself

Nurses rushed in and out of the theatre. Mr Heart is beating so fast that it might as well burst. tears kept streaming down my face as different thoughts invaded my mind. what if they die? no no no no, don't think such things. "think positively" I kept chanting those two words in my head as I prayed to God.

"vy" Lilly called me and tugged at my sleeve. I opened my eyes and saw the doctor, his face expressionless. my entire body turned cold when I heard those words that turned my whole life upside down.

'I'm sorry but we lost them'
