Chapter 3: First Class

"A human? How must he feel if I, of all people am still afraid," Daire thought to himself. "Hey beta! Are you paying attention?" a commanding voice spoke.

Of course it was the alpha wolf in senior year, Vince Mcmagnus, ordering around all the first year wolves giving a run down on how he's the alpha and that it gives him privilege to control all of them.

The wolves were congregating in the right wing next to the main staircase. "Yes, yes I am," Daire replied sweating. "I'm sorry, what was that?" he glared at Daire.

"Yes… Alpha," he answered with reluctance. Daire was new to education as a whole. His parents took care of him and his younger brother and taught him everything he needed to know.

He's more so here because his parents think it would be better for his life; to one day leave the isles and live in the human world where there aren't Gods causing storms from fighting or extremely deadly creatures lurking in the grass and around trees.

He didn't expect his first day to be commanded by an alpha tyrant. His grandfather, who was also an alpha, never threw his weight around like this. Daire was already afraid and unsure of leaving his pack, even if it was just for a while.

"The human won't last a day here, so…" the alpha rambled on about things werewolves had to do while in the school; transforming on a full moon, where they run free and so on; nothing that gave Daire an interest to listen.

He kept observing Griffin walking down the corridor looking past all the classrooms. He was heading for the Tempultas Class down the left wing. He could smell the fear exuding off of him. Even without the scent it was as visible as phoenix feathers at night.

He empathized with Griffin's fear and seeing that he was out of his element, he felt the same. Daire maybe a supernatural being but this place wasn't built with him in mind.

The friendly and wise pack of wolves he called family was nothing like the packs of wolves he saw here. He wasn't lucky enough to be born with the alpha genes, so he was obligated to follow an alpha.

"Alright, that's it for now. The next pack meeting will be when I howl, so keep that in mind," Vince dismissed the pack. He and 3 other senior betas walked away, probably to their next class. Daire headed to Tempultas class with the other 1st years.

Griffin paused for a second; had he walked too far down the corridor? "Left wing, second room," Griffin reminded himself from everything that Ms Blackthorne informed him before sending his luggage to his dorm.

To his left the entire wall was a window to the outside. He had passed a door and was at the second entrance. He entered the classroom to be stared at by an entire class that was already going on. "Uhm… is this Tempultas?" Griffin asked the teacher who stood there.

"No, Tempultas is the 1st room, this is Magic Theory," she answered. The room was full of second year students, who were whispering about 'the human' when Griffin entered.

Word travelled fast in the school; especially when even whispering is crystal clear to most creatures. "Sorry," Griffin left the class feeling humiliated.

He entered the class he walked by and saw 1st year students taking seats in an auditorium-like classroom extending all the way to the top back of the class.

There were no heaters or air conditioners; the school and the area were naturally cold. Witches burnt in fires, vampires hate sunlight, wendigoes essentially exude coldness, nymphs are either in mountains or live in water and werewolves probably are hot due to their increased metabolism; cold was just something Griffin was going to have to adjust to.

"I should probably sit at the front. The back is probably for the people who have super hearing," Griffin thought to himself. In the third row on the far left there was a boy sitting alone.

He seemed somewhat nervous twiddling his fingers. Griffin decided to sit next to him; he can't fear everything if he wished to stay here; besides, he looked human.

Griffin shuffled into the row and sat next to him. Daire turned to his right to notice the human from before was sitting next to him. "You're the human," Daire said in shock. "Yeah, I am… is that a problem?" Griffin asked uncomfortably getting up from his seat. "No! No, it's fine. I do not mind," Daire quickly uttered.

Griffin took out his notebook from his satchel and a pencil. Daire stared at the desk and tempted to break the awkward silence. "I'm… Daire by the way," he introduced himself. "Griffin," he replied. "You mean like the creature?" Daire enquired. "I guess so," Griffin kept giving answers that couldn't lead into a conversation.

Griffin thought to himself, "I can't be the same person I was. I'm in a school for the supernatural for Pete's sake. And this guy's trying to talk to me; I should talk back." "Although, I didn't think that I would be named after a creature that actually, exists," Griffin continued.

"Yeah, although I've never seen an actual Griffin; they're an endangered species," Daire replied. "Well now you've seen one," Griffin comically responded. Daire laughed and said, "That was a pretty bad joke." The both laughed in hushed tones.

A tall lanky man with an untucked shirt came into the room with a file. He set the file on the teacher's desk and took a good look at the class. "Hello class, I am Darius Blaidd but you can call me Mr Blaidd and welcome to Tempultas," Mr Blaidd spoke.

He opened up his file and held papers that were stapled. "409 students this year; I don't think that number's ever going to go down," he remarked.

"Now, everyone put your mind at ease. In this class no books are needed. Here, you will learn how to focus your power, your magic, your anger, so that you have better control over your abilities…" Mr Blaidd went on until he noticed Daire and Griffin talking.

Griffin and Daire were getting along pretty well. Both of them being out of their natural element helped to better understand each other. "So what creature are you?" Griffin asked. "Oh, I'm a beta wolf," Daire replied. "You mean a werewolf?" Griffin's eyes widened. "It's nothing compared to an alpha though," said Daire.

At the back, Callidora was sitting next to a girl she didn't know. She noticed down to her left, in the middle row sat the vampire who had his hands behind his head napping in the carriage she was in. She saw him writing in his book but she couldn't see exactly what he was writing. Maybe he was writing a poem?

Little did she know that he wrote down the word 'sly' and was consequently writing down how many words he knew that rhymed with it. He had stopped at the letter 'y' after writing down an entire page of words.

With the utterance of, "Put your mind at ease," he put his hands to the back of his head and leaned against the desk behind him. He put up his feet on the desk and the people sitting next to him looked at him eyes narrowed.

Mr Blaidd facing Daire and Griffin continued, "Putting your mind at ease, makes you think and use your powers and abilities better, even if you are human." Griffin and Daire quickly faced Mr Blaidd who stared back at them.

"Just because you do not have supernatural abilities does not excuse you from having to pass this class, let me see here, Mr Sceft… Mr Scept," he struggled to pronounce the spelling of Griffin's name. "It's Sef-ter, sir. Griffin Sef-ter," Griffin replied audibly. "Well Mr Schphetor, you will still have to master your human capabilities as well as Mr-" he paused. Daire replied, "Grayson, sir."

"Grayson? How is Alias?" Mr Blaidd questioned in recognition. "My grandfather? He's fine sir," Daire replied. "He's a good leader," Mr Blaidd replied. "Let's hope you can keep up with his footsteps Mr Grayson."

He then faced the vampire relaxing a little too much, "Looks like someone has gone to the advance lessons already, Mr Feet on my desk?" Mr Blaidd stared at him.

He quickly put his feet down as he opened his eyes and realized the entire class was looking at him. "Heston sir," he replied. Mr Blaidd replied going through his papers, "Well, Mr…Feldspar I do not expect you to sleep during my classes," he warned. "Well, you said relax your mind sir," Heston replied. There were some giggles in the class.

Mr Blaidd shook his head and continued briefing his new students on what Tempultas class is and how it worked. "You will attend this class from 8:30 to 9:00 from Mondays to Fridays no matter what electives you choose, for your 1st year this a compulsory class.

If you do not pass the 1st year, you will be required to take it in your second and I can still see some faces from the previous year here. You know who you are. I would love to pass all of you but you need to meet certain requirements and failing to do so; I can no longer help. There is no shame in failing as long as you learn from them…"

As Mr Blaidd continued to talk, Callidora opened her bag to grab an eraser to erase her part of the desk that had a bunch of curse words and bad drawings. As she opened her bag, Nora jumped out onto her desk. "Nora, get back in the bag!" she whispered.

As she reached for Nora, Nora jumped and glided down the desks towards Mr Blaidd. The students dodged the wings and antlers of the mammal. Griffin turned around to see a rabbit with fangs coming towards him and dodged quickly enough that Nora landed near Mr Blaidd.

"What's that!?" Griffin exclaimed eyes widened. "Wolpertinger," Daire replied. "It's a harmless creature to you and us. It feeds on leaves on trees and occasionally fruits," he continued. Mr Blaidd picked Nora up by the waist.

Callidora super speeded down and said, "I'm so sorry, Mr Blaidd!" Mr Blaidd gave Nora to Callidora and replied, "Well Ms…" "Arison," "Ms Arison, the briefing should have told you that all pets are to remain in the garden during school hours," Mr Blaidd stated.

"I was kind of late," she replied. "Now that you know, please take your seat and as your first assignment, control your pet in your seat for the rest of the class and you can let her out after." Callidora embarrassed, speeded up to her seat and ducked her head down avoiding any eye contact.

The class continued until the bell rang. They didn't study anything for the first day. Mr Blaidd explained on what they would do such as meditation and lucid dreaming. Before everyone left, he said, "Remember werewolves; make sure to be in this class on the day of a full moon. It doesn't matter if you've mastered your transformation or not.

For the safety of yourself and this school you are required to be here at least for your first year. I hope I see all the same seats filled tomorrow as well and nobody 'gets sick'. Good luck 1st years, choose your classes wisely and let this era of your school life be fun and useful," he ended.

"You want to come with me to get the subject forms?" Griffin asked Daire. "Sure, we can fill them up in the cafeteria while we eat. I heard the food is good" he replied. "Where'd you hear that?" "Optimism," Daire responded...
