The old man had expected an answer from Raphael but even he wasn't expecting an answer like that. It was clear that even Raphael wasn't as perceptive as he used to think. Amongst all the people that might need his help, Azekiel was the last person. 

When he was at his peak, the thought of someone wanting to help him was a fool's thoughts, but even now when he was weaker, it was clear that he didn't need much of help. If he did, he already had someone who could help him.
