There was anger in Thor's mind, a strong desire for revenge, however, there was more shock. 

Mavi was like a brother to Thor, the two had been together for centuries and Thor knew Mavi's temperament well. 

Mavi was not a man who could be baited into a fight against a stronger opponent or someone without the means to retreat. For him to fall in battle meant that he was utterly outclassed by his opponent. An outcome that was hard to digest for Thor.
