Mine at First Scent

"Please, His majesty awaits you," the butler stood at the side of the double doors, gesturing for her to go in. He wanted her to come in?!! Elaina gulped nervously. She had gotten a glimpse of the people in there when the butler entered and she could tell that they were all high class, she wouldn't even be surprised if members of the upper echelon were in there too. But, the problem wasn't the people but how she was dressed. Elaina slowly entered the large hall, her eyes trained on the ground. She could feel his intense gaze on her and many other curious gazes. She subtly pinched the sides of her joggers, to divert her attention from the looks she was receiving. She didn't like being the center of attention, it turned her into a nervous wreck! Mael sat at the head of the table his dark hawk-like gaze watched her like a predator watching his prey and when she came to stand beside him, Sit," he ordered. Elaina reached out to the chair on his side and a maid quickly came to help her pull it back when they heard Mael speak, "Who told you to sit there?" he demanded making both Elaina and the maid pause. Elaina turned to look at him, confusion evident in her black eyes. Did he want her to sit on the floor? A smirk curved up his lips then he moved his chair back a little and tapped his lap. "Sit right here," Elaina's and many others eyes widened and the sound of clattering cutlery echoed through the hall. He wanted her to do what?!

Elaina's eyes fluttered as her consciousness slowly returned to her. Her left eye opened before her right which tingled and she lifted her hand from under the sheets to rub it and the discomfort disappeared.

It was dark. The soft mattress behind her and the sheets covering her body ruffled as she tried to move. She had no idea of where she was and no recollection of how she got there. The last thing she remembered was talking off her shoes when they had returned from the midnight ball. How long has it been since then? She didn't know but she felt that it wasn't a normal night's sleep she just woke up from.

There were times when she would wake up exhausted and dehydrated with no recollection of the previous day or hour just like now. During those times, her father would be by her side, nursing her to full health.

Her head was aching and her throat was dry. She needed water but she could barely move. Gathering enough strength, she turned on her side. Her heart ached for her father.

Her eyes watered but then she felt a hand on her forehead,

"Your temperature is almost back to normal," her father's voice filled her ears. Her eyes widened and she turned on her back and met her father's warm filled eyes, the only things she could see in the dark room.

"Dad?" she sat up quickly, "How are you-"

"Don't sit up too fast," Sebastian placed his hand on her shoulder as he sat down on the bed.

"Drink," he gave her a cold bottle of water which she collected and drank. The bottles came one after the other until her thirst was quenched.

Elaina rested her head on the wooden headboard. Her eyelids suddenly became heavy and she found it hard to keep her eyes open.

"Go to sleep, Elaina, I am right here," her father's soothing voice led her into a deep slumber.

***

Elaina's eyes slowly opened again after a few hours. This time she felt better, her body felt lighter and she felt more energetic.

She stared at the ceiling which she recognized as the guest room while her brain replayed her memories. It was hazy but she remembered eating a late dinner after returning from the midnight ball. She also remembered feeling heat after waking up and leaving her room.

Images of her being in the kitchen flashed in her head. A blurry vision, a shattered mug, her rising temperature, a steaming bottle, it was all a jumbled mess.

Her right eye throbbed a bit and when she tried to rub it, an image of a raging wide darkness flashed and the feeling of excruciating pain in that eye swallowed her senses. It was too vivid and not something her mind could conjure. She tried remembering anything before or after that but there was nothing.

It was odd, Elaina raised her hand to her vision, it felt like her memories tried to erase themselves but failed.

"Just what happened to me?" she mumbled. An image of warmth-filled green eyes suddenly popped up and her eyes widened.

Her father was here!! He had given her water to drink!! Elaina realized as she sat up quickly though her head spun with the speed, She paid no attention as she hurriedly placed her feet on the floor.

But her legs gave up on her the moment she put her weight on them and she would have fallen if not for Alexander who entered the room at the right time.

"You shouldn't move too much, Laina. You just woke up," he scolded as he placed her on the bed.

"Alex," Elaina placed her hand on her head as the dizziness slowly cleared, and when she looked at her brother, an outline of darkness formed around him but was gone the moment she blinked.

She paused while staring at her brother. What was that? Her vision just cleared so it could have been her imagination but was it?

Alex noticed her staring so he asked, "Is something wrong?" but she didn't get to answer because the door burst open, and in came Mya, who ran and wrapped her hands around her daughter.

"Thank goodness," she said with her eyes closed and Elaina hugged her back.

Mya pulled back and placed her hands on her daughter's face, "How are you feeling?" She had been unconscious for almost two days.

"I am fine," Elaina managed to reply as her mother was squeezing her cheeks.

Mya used her fingers to open her eyelids. She saw that Elaina's right eye was glowing just like her brother's. Dread filled her heart, she had awakened a part of her sight.

Elaina watched the spiraling emotions in her mother's blue eyes, "I really am fine," she assured her with a smile but it didn't soothe her mother's worries.

"I wish I could take the blood from you," Mya mumbled which Elaina heard faintly. She wanted to ask about it but her attention was drawn when the door opened and her eyes found her father. His green eyes were gentle and filled with love and he carried a warm smile on his lips.

Mya gave her space to stand and Elaina ran to her father. Her legs wobbled but she didn't stop until she entered her father's embrace.

"You shouldn't move too much, Elaina. You're still weak," he told her gently while running his hand through her hair. How he had missed his family.

"I'm fine. Thank you for taking care of me, Dad," she thanked with teary eyes.

"Will you be staying for long?" she unwrapped her arms around him and asked.

"My arrival was rather sudden, I would have to return and complete some work before I can be home fully," he answered.

"Okay," Elaina nodded. She was a bit disappointed but half bread was better than none.

"You must have questions. Come I will answer them for you," he led her to the bed where she sat in the middle of Alex and Mya while he sat on a chair opposite them. A complete family at last, albeit for a little while.

"What happened to me?" Elaina broke the silence. She noticed that her father's hair was now black, it was a sharp contrast from what she remembered but she decided to leave the question for later.

"Can you tell me what you remember?" Sebastian inquired.

"I remember feeling immense heat and there was a steaming bottle," Elaina frowned as she tried to remember more but the harder she tried to remember the more her memories disappeared.

"No, there wasn't a bottle rather a mug. My right eye was, no.... Alex was, no...." Now she didn't remember anything at all not even her previous words. "I don't remember," she stated.

"Hmmm," Sebastian thought. Her memories were broken and was still trying to erase the parts of the awakening, an abnormal one indeed.

He could give a plausible reason to take her mind off it, but the curiosity of the mind was limitless. His brother-in-law also seemed to have noticed the long-awaited change, so it wouldn't be good if he got to her first, not to mention the other parties.

"You know about the night creatures, right, Elaina?" he asked. He decided to go with part of the truth.

"Yes, the vampires and werewolves," she answered.

"Precisely and you know about their curse too," he inquired and she nodded.

"The vampires would disintegrate if they walk under the sun while the werewolves would turn into monsters under the full moon,"

"Yes, that is correct. Among the vampires and werewolves, there are creatures greater than their kind. The pure-blooded vampires and the wolves,"

"What makes them different?" asked Elaina.

"Their untainted blood is what makes them different. The original vampire created the pure-bloods different from the other vampires and the wolves are those that did not mix their blood with the humans," he explained but when he saw the confusion written on his daughter's face he explained further,

"Wolves are creatures loved by nature. They were blessed with many gifts, setting them above the other creatures and in the same league as the pure-bloods. But a significant part of the wolves separated from their pack and mixed with the humans, losing their favor with nature and most of their powers, hence the addition of 'were' to their name. Werewolves are wolves with human blood running through their veins."

Elaina understood their history. She had heard about the pure-bloods who were more powerful than the vampires but this was her first time hearing about the wolves. It was an interesting history but how did this relate to her?

Sebastian continued, "Among the creatures roaming the earth, there is a group called the special creatures. They are called special because they are beings blessed by nature or as some would say, blessed by the gods,"

They are special because they hold powers that no ordinary human or night creature could ever hope to have. Some even go as far as calling them abominations, creatures that shouldn't exist because of the powers they possess yet there is a blood-soaked battle for those powers. An example of a special creature is a wolf,"

"Because they are blessed by nature," Elaina completed.

"Exactly, now to my main point. You are a hybrid born of two special creatures, Elaina,"
