Midnight Hound

I stared at Laurent from across the room and my heart melted as I saw him smile while the kids in front of him played and danced hilariously. My mate's scent I realized, was emanating from him as he smiled and laughed. He turned and saw me. His beautiful smile vanished and the scent around him changed. Then I realized, he was masking his scent from me. He was my mate and he was hiding it from me. Why? was it because I was going to die if I didnt turn and hold my form stay a wolf whenever and however I want? Wasn't he supposed to love me unconditionally? Wasn't he supposed to take me as I am?

Laurent (2)

As he walked into the room, everyone fell silent and moved further back. He took off his baseball hat and brushed his hair back.

My stomach started dancing. The same way it did every time I smelt the scent of dark earth. But it wasn't there. Or there was only a minute sprinkle of it outside.

I don't know what I expected the most feared wolf here to look like but it definitely wasn't this.

He didn't look thirty. Let alone a day above twenty-five. He looked more like a teen. I knew I expected him to look masculine and threatening but he didn't even in the slightest. I think I know why the Greek said death was handsome.

He was handsome.

Incredibly handsome. With his laid-back jeans and folded long sleeves of his hood. He looked just perfect. The protruding veins on his arms, the hair that was just perfect. He did have a scar on his neck but it wasn't that big. But his face, his deep blue eyes weren't bloodshot but deep deep blue and full of light. They looked kind.

Though his face told his sad story it wasn't angry or menacing.

It was sad. A face long stretched with sadness.

Was this him? Was this the most feared wolf on the entire island of Arcadia?

"Laurent." Abigail started. but he gave her a menacing look and she stopped, bowed her head.

"Where is..." He looked at me and his face instantly darkened. All the warmth that once resided in his face vanished. My stomach sank. Was he going to kill me? Was he...

"... Where is it?" He asked, calmly standing in front of the door. Leaning on the door, like he wasn't in any dangerous situation. He looked at his watch calmly and added, "You have two minutes to tell me where it is, and don't bother trying to fight me. We got kids in the other room."

My body went cold. I looked at him wondering how he knew. Was it like I knew he was attacking the Alpha without having seen or met him my entire life?

He locked eyes with me and frowned, again.

I looked down fearing he was going to kill me. Everybody around me moved to expose me, except Abigail. She stepped in front of me. I took a look at him again and he was scribbling something on paper.

"Laurent, it's been over twenty years, we don't know where it is," Abigail said protecting me.

He ignored her and continued scribbling on his paper. When he was done, he put the paper in his pocket and made a fist with his right hand.

"Times up," He said opening his hand. Two fireflies shot out of it and flew straight to me. They circled around me and landed on my shoulders. I wanted to cry, to tell the earth to open and swallow me whole. Abigail brushed the flies off and they flew off.

I tried to move but my feet felt like they were cast on concrete.

I tried again. But they didn't in the least move.

Move! please! Move! I begged them. Then prayed to the Moon Goddess Selene. Then the guardian Moon Goddess Artemis. But whatever held my feet, didn't let go. But rather it made them even worse. My feet turned to butter. I held on to Abigail for support.

Mom! I wanted to scream, but my tongue just stuck to the roof of my mouth. Abigail squeezed my hand.

"Now, you all know what happens right?" He asked in his husky rough voice. Chills went up my spine knowing fully well what was going to happen. DEATH!

He was going to kill all of us.

"I get what I want, I don't hurt or kill, anyone. However I don't, A lot of people are going to get hurt. you attack me, everyone dies." He said coldly. Each word was as menacing as his presence was.

"In the end, I still get what I want," He added.

"Laurent, I don't know where it is. I'm sorry. And I would say as I have said twenty years ago. I'm really sorry..." He scorned as Abigail apologized.

"Oh, I'm not here for that. At least not yet." I took another peek at him and he locked eyes with me for a second. I felt my stomach run. "So where is it?"

He advanced towards us.

He is going to kill me. But what is it that he was looking for?

Did I have it?

Whatever he was looking for did I take it?

Was it the locket?

Was it my mom's locket?

Was it the ring ruby gave me and I lost it?

When? What was it?

Was it...

I looked around not knowing what I was to do. I felt like running. like hiding within the ground. The fireflies flew from behind him again and flew straight towards me again. They landed on my locket this time. Two more flew from him and landed on my nose.

"Laurent, I know you're mad but, I told you we don't know where it is," He smirked as he came face to face with Abigail.

"Fine then." He pushed Abigail to the side and I defended my head with my arms. He just brushed past me and walked to the Alpha. He ripped the alphas wound dressing and pressed the wounds.

The Alpha who had been motionless since he attacked him grimaced and groaned weakly.

"Stop!" The words ran out of my mouth and I embraced myself for any retaliation from him with my eyes shut.

"Please, stop, you are hurting him," I begged.

He stopped, looked at me, and slapped the wounds. The Alpha whimpered.

"Please!" The words ran out of my mouth again. "Please stop, you..."

"What?" He asked pinning his eyes on me. I looked away as my knees buckled. "Finish your sentence."

"You... you... you scare me."

"Well." He came close to me and lifted my chin up. "Since you asked nicely, I'm gonna take you and spare everyone here. But you all will have until the next full moon or you all..." He touched my temple and everything in front of me faded.

That's how I woke up here. how I got here, I didn't know how nor did I care. I looked up from the kitchen window and he was still working on his graves. the door in front of me was open. I crept to the door and opened it a bit wider. The forest cover looked far. he is going to catch me easily if I try to run that way.

I went to find the front door and found it leading not only to the road but the forest too. The front door wasn't far from the house too. It was less than a few hundred yards away.

I can make it.

I shot off to the forest without looking back.
