Chapter 43

“Bing was missing, wasn’t he?” I replied. “But look where we found him.”

“Except you said that people were looking for Carl. The Feds you said, right?”

I nodded into my phone. “Doesn’t mean he was found, though. Easy enough to get lost in Big Sur. The O’Malleys had lots of land. Who’s to say the people looking for Carl looked in the right place.”

“And you think Carl killed his wife.”

Again I nodded, then shrugged. “No clue. Someone killed her, though. He just seems like the most likely suspect. Plus, he did disappear right around the time she was murdered.”

“Circumstantial evidence, Lacey.”

I grinned. “Still, if I had to lay bets, I’d say it was him.”

“Okay, say you’re right, say he’s living down in Big Sur, in hiding,” he said. “Wouldn’t Bing know that, too? Because if they’re both there, that’s not by coincidence. And if you think Carl killed Rosemary, then wouldn’t Bing think that as well?”
