He shook his head. “You’re too young, too good looking, too moderately successful to be this maudlin, Jack.”

“Tell me about it,” I replied. “So you don’t think I’m middle-aged?”

He laughed. “No, because that would make me middle-aged, and clearly I’m not.”

“Clearly.”

I sat there thinking about Monroe’s question. If I had the choice, who would I have chosen? In truth, I hadn’t a clue. Bing and Dave were apples and oranges. Bing was obviously the orange. Then again, like I said, the options weren’t there, so what was the point of pining for either of them. All I had now were sour grapes.

“So what are you going to do next?” he asked. “Are you coming home soon? I miss you. Paul is getting on my nerves. He wants us to go on a diet together. I promised to love, honor and cherish. There was no mention of a diet. I would’ve remembered such a thing.”

“Just let me know if I need to switch my supply of Coke to Coke Zero.”

He shuddered. “Zero chance. And you didn’t answer the question.”
