“So one dead women, a missing husband, a missing son, a vacant plot of land, and a possible murder cover-up,” he reeled off. “That about cover it?”

“Yep.”

“Want some good news then?”

“Yep.”

“Okay then,” he said. “I have the pictures of Bing. We’re leaving tomorrow morning. You’re paying for the hotel in Big Sur. A nice one, too. Overlooking the Pacific. Scenic as shit, Jack.”

I sighed. “That’s the good news?”

“For me, I meant,” he said. “Good news for me.”

I should’ve guessed that. “Safe travels, Monroe,” I said.

“Did I mention the spa package?”

I clicked off before he could throw in room service.

I took a nap, dreaming of Bing―though strangely he looked a bit like Bradley Cooper. When I awoke, lunch was waiting for me. Ma made sandwiches. That was pretty much the extent of her cooking, but to be fair, she did sandwiches like she did tangents. That is to say, she did them well.
