“I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon,” he greeted with a smile.

“Yeah, well, I wish it was for a better reason than what I’ve got.”

The somberness of Shea’s tone made Edmund’s smile fade. “What do you mean? Did you find out something else about Ilyin’s agenda with the Assembly?”

Mention of Ilyin drew Darby’s attention, and she swiveled in her seat to watch the conversation with dark eyes. Edmund held up his hand to keep her from speaking as he listened to Shea’s response.

“No, it’s not about that.” There was a pause, and the distant sound of a club came through the line. “Look, Edmund, I’m going to ask you one thing, and I need you to be straight with me. Friend to friend.”

“After what you did for me? Anything.”

“Did Tatiana really kill Mathias?”
