4 Chapter one part 4/5

I stepped back slowly dry leaves crunching under my bare feet as I made my way backwards not taking my eyes from the spot where I heard the sound coming from. The creature, whatever it was hadn't shown itself yet and this terrified me. I could feel the blood pulsing behind my ears. It was silent now but I could feel the creature's presence still.

I stepped back again and fumbled falling on my butt hard.

I raised my hands covering my face, defending and bracing for the moment the creature would tackle me to the ground biting into my neck as easy as cheese.

I waited...

and waited...

nothing.

Slowly and cautiously I lowered my hands stood up. Not a rustle no sounds save the tree leaves brushing against each other in the wind, the sound didn't do much to calm be but I edged to the area where the sound came from picking up a stone and tossing it in the general direction I heard it fall a heavy -thud- on dry leaves...

Nothing moved.

Was I saved? I quickly moved back and made a wide arc avoiding the area where I heard the sound taking the longer way back to the clearing.

The moment I did I dropped the basket and ran to my tree.

In the safety of my nest I crouched low and peered to the only entrance waiting for whatever had undoubtedly followed me. I trembled uncontrollably regretting the fact that I hadn't made a door and that if the creature was smart enough it would find the small opening and easily make its way in.

I trembled in absolute fear making myself prone.

Among the large dry leaves I stayed as still as I could possibly be even through my uncontrollable trembling my breath frantic and louder than I would've liked, I clasped my hand over my mouth the moment I heard soft footfalls making its way around the perimeter of my makeshift fence.

I dared not move to look in the direction.

What if it heard me? The urge to look was just so strong that it really took all I had to stay still.

What if its a bear? A wolf? A bobcat?

It made its way around the fence stopping short of the entrance and turning the other way making its way around to the other end stopping behind me. Just behind my little tree where the fence was closest to it.

The creature sniffed the air and moved around sniffing the air some more before it snorted and growled a little before charging in the direction of the Forrest again. luckily the entrance was pointing away from the forest and so it hadn't found the way in upon making its way from the forest. Had it been the opposite I may not have been so lucky. However, the situation terrified me so much that I'd just laid there for what seemed like hours just to make sure that it wasn't lurking waiting for me to give up my position so it could attack.

I waited and waited, through my hunger pains, though my position was highly uncomfortable I stayed perfectly still not daring to move an inch.

The whole time thinking, what the hell was that?

And..

Why in gods name didn't I make a door or at least a way so that I could barricade my self for protection?

A few times I wanted to cry so bad that even though my hands were over my mouth I had to fight the urge because I still wasn't sure if the creature had really left.

My hair was a tangled mess my clothes were dirty and hunger stabbed at my stomach and to top it off I was in danger.

Thinking back I could never once think of another situation where I was just so distraught and fearful for my life.

Why was 'I' here?

I cursed mentally. Thousands of other girls and I just happened to be the one that was taken? What bullshit is that?

Surely.....

Surely there was someone else, someone that wasn't me?

What did 'I' ever do wrong? I've been nice to everyone, I've been kind and even helpful. so why me?

Why me damnit?!!

My attention was slowly pulled from thought by a familiar set of noises. The small white creatures were playing outside the makeshift fence seemingly oblivious to my presence.

Slowly I got up and made my away to the opening peeking out to make sure it really was only the little guys.

Nothing else was in sight.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

I knew that the creature was gone long before and that I'd only refrained from moving due to fear.

I also knew that it was mostly tanks to these guys that I could gather the courage to check and see for myself. Some of the creatures looked up at me as I timidly stuck to the entrance still hesitant to come out again. The ones that didn't notice me and continued playing made small squealing and chirping sounds as they rolled around in a play fight.

The sight made me smile and relax a bit.

"Thanks guys, for always helping me." I said out loud .

I'd not spoken for the last few days and now it dawned on me just how long it had been since i said anything out loud.

My voice sounded strange, not the way I had remembered it but I just chalked it up to not having spoken for such a long time.

The little white creatures seemed to agree as they darted off towards the tree-line one of them dropping something large and round as it ran away with the others.

'Wait!" you dropped your "thing.." I had picked it up, it was large, about two times the size of an orange and had a green and yellow color with a smooth and soft outer skin.

It smelled, heavenly, its strong sweet aroma wafted up to my nose and without realizing it I brought the thing closer to my nose.

It was a fruit!

It had a small opening where the little creature had nibbled on it. So I convinced myself that it was safe to eat and I was just so hungry not eating anything since I woke up here.

"Do I eat this?" I asked myself. "It cant be poisonous right?" Since the creature was eating it it must be ok.

I quickly made my way to the shallow river and washed it before attacking the poor fruit.

On my first bite I didn't do much chewing and I soon realized the whole thing was edible and tasted like sweet grapes except it wasn't.

Without realizing, a small teardrop rolled down my cheek and I sniffled a little. the same way you do tilting your head back cause you don't want anyone to see you cry.

So damn lucky.

I blinked a few times to push back the tears.

"Lalie, don't be stupid, there's no-one who can see you, if there was you probably wouldn't be in this mess." I sighed and continued eating.

The sun was now close to setting and I had so much more to do. So much more.
