1 You?!

Gwen's POV

"You can't give me a child. So why would I stay married to you?" He asked me, cruelly. Alright, Ethan and I were not best friends or a couple in love, but I thought that after those years… he would at least be a bit sympathetic with me! I could feel my eyes filling with tears as my vision blurred. I just couldn't say if it was sadness, rage or both.

"But, I can..." I tried to say I could have children, but, of course, he cut me off.

"No! If you could have, we would already have one, after three years of marriage!" He yelled at me and the tears were running down my face now. I was naive for thinking that he could have feelings for me, despite our marriage not being our own choice.

"Ethan, I... the doctor said there is nothing wrong with m-"

"So is there something wrong with me? Is that what you're trying to say?" He asked me with contempt. I hated it. Not only contempt, but disgust and mockery.

"No! That's n-"

"Nevermind. Of course there is a problem with you. But don't worry, I have solved that problem. Darla is pregnant, so I don't need you to keep trying anymore."

The way he said it was what made me snap out of my self-pitying state and start to see things clearly.

"You're telling me that you cheated on me?" I asked, still trying to absorb what he just told me.

"I never liked you in the first place. It was just business." The last stab in my heart.

We married because our grandparents had a deal. They made a promise to each other. My grandfather lent a great amount of money to Ethan's family in exchange for a marriage between the two families, within no more than two generations. If the deal was broken, his grandfather would have to give back a great amount of money and that would destroy the company at the time.

Of course, the deal was not legal. No one can make you marry someone else like this. But it was all about honor. Since Ethan's grandfather was very sick and everyone thought he would die, Ethan accepted it. He had plans on divorcing me as soon as his grandfather passed away. But the old man grew stronger and was alive until that very day.

"But… even so. We are married and you impregnated another woman!" I shouted. I could take no more. "You know what? I want a divorce."

That was when my heart started to push Ethan Lennox away from my heart.

*

"You?" I asked in astonishment.

I was finally back after two years abroad, studying, working and constructing myself, for I always lived for others, the way everyone said I should, but never for myself.

Being married for three years made me wonder: why on earth did I need to stay in that life, in that way, just serving and never receiving one smile or even a 'thank you'? Well, I didn't and one day, it just snapped.

Driving through that road that was so familiar to me, bringing me back some memories I wanted to forget. But my mind could not think so much about the past, for in the present, I saw a car on the side of the road. It had hit a tree and, without thinking twice, I stopped my car and went to aid whoever was inside. My phone in my shaking hand was ready to call 911.

The thing is, I didn't expect it would be him. I had to chuckle. Life was so funny, sometimes.

"Gwen?" he asked in confusion. His forehead was bleeding.

"Yeah, me. Well, I'm calling the ambulance." I answered and I could hear my voice was a bit harsh. Whatever. I was already helping him, I didn't need to be lovely, either.

"No... call Brandon." I noticed he didn't say 'please', which meant he was giving me orders, as always. Well, I was letting this one pass just because he was hurt. Not dying, though. I thought.

"I don't have his number." I was trying to keep my tone calm, and not urge the idiot. We were wasting time. He hurt his head! May not die, but get retarded. MORE retarded.

He, then, slowly, searched for his phone in his blazer. After finding it. he gave the phone to me, already unlocked. I went to look into his agenda and found Brandon's contact.

'Hey, Ethan! I was about to call you, man! Guess wha-'

"No time for that! Your friend is hurt. He asked me to call you."

'Who the hell?' Brandon asked, sounding confused.

I just gave the phone to Ethan, holding it to his ear.

"Hospital… but d-discretion." He said and moved his hand, motioning for me to talk on the phone.

"So, how are we going to do that?" I asked Brandon, already annoyed.

'Where exactly are you? I'm going there to fetch him.' He said in a clumsy tone and I gave the instructions. After that, I hung up the phone and recorded Brandon's number on my own device, in case Ethan's phone died. His battery was almost over, after all.

We waited like forever. I couldn't believe how unlucky I was. So many people lived in that city, but it was him I had to encounter first. I shook my head. He was ruthless with me the last time we saw each other and now, here was I, worried about his well-being. Damn! And no, not because I loved him. But because he was someone in need, hurt and, no matter who it was, I could never ignore someone in need like that. Even the person being Ethan.

After a while, a car came so fast I thought it might crush me, but fortunately, it stopped in front of me, inches away only.

A tall, blond man got out. Brandon. I knew that one. He was the womanizer doctor who was one of Ethan's best friends. Actually, there were four of them. One more reserved, one being Ethan himself, and the other two both womanizers, party boys. I never understood how they got together and were such good friends.

Brandon walked to us very fast, his eyes almost jumping out.

"What happened?" he asked, already going for Ethan's seatbelt. He knew very well it was not good to move someone who suffered an accident without the proper help, but, since he was a doctor, I had to trust him, right? And, anyways, it was his friend who needed help, not me. If Ethan was okay with that, who was I to question?

"I know as much as you do. There is a tree, there is a car." I said, emotionless, pointing at the scene.

Brandon finally looked at me and raised his eyebrows, in surprise.

"Wait… Gwen?"

"Yours truly." I said. "Now, your friend. May I help with anything?" I asked and he nodded.

I helped him to move Ethan from one car to another. By that time, I could see that Ethan was not very well. He was almost unconscious.

"Can you come along?" Brandon asked, frowning. "I think someone needs to hold him, so he won't fall."

"Sure." What else could I say? Refuse to help? If I were to refuse, I would have already done that and let the heartless bastard die. Not that I thought he would die, really, but anyway. Details.
