24 Chapter 24: Oaks's Attitude

"The bald guy sent someone."

After finishing the snacks and licking its mouth, Goose was reporting its work to Oaks.

"Two people, this is what the man left behind."

Oaks communicated more on a spiritual level with Goose, so the ball-shaped listening device only recorded a series of meowing sounds.

"This is the flaw of not personally inspecting."

Oaks sighed. Such an unprofessional thing could only be done by those agents.

But it was easy to guess. Since the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were coming for Goose, it meant that at least one agent had noticed Goose's existence.

And this agent was of a high rank, capable of directly meeting Nick Fury, which would raise the other party's alertness.

With the vigilance of Nick Fury even just saying "orange cat named Goose" would be enough to arouse his desire to investigate.

And all his information was not a secret in the presence of an organization like S.H.I.E.L.D.

Then it followed naturally—sending two senior agents directly. The director of S.H.I.E.L.D. probably had already thoroughly investigated him.

However, Oaks was now prepared to face S.H.I.E.L.D.

That day would eventually come. Even if Goose hadn't attracted their attention, they would surely take action when the scale and effectiveness of the restorative potion became known to the public.

So, was it Sharon Carter, or someone else?

"For planting this little device in the home of a law-abiding, honest citizen like me, I reserve the right to hold you accountable through legal means."

Oaks's speech wasn't fast, but anyone could hear the underlying dissatisfaction.

"If you can't provide me with a reasonable explanation, I believe many top lawyers would be interested in this lawsuit. After all, what I have here would interest the entire world."

He held the ball-shaped listening device in his hand, and a cluster of catnip seedlings grew from the cracks. Goose licked its mouth in delight.

"Have fun with it."

Oaks returned the catnip ball to Goose, who happily began to nibble on it.

Not making Oaks wait for long, the next morning, just as Antonio had driven away, a man with a trustworthy smile walked straight into the store.

"Oaks Woods, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Coulson's mouth twitched as he approached the counter, but Oaks completely ignored him.

"I'm Phil Coulson, a Level 7 agent from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. Dr. Woods, it's our first meeting, and what happened before was a misunderstanding."

Coulson regretted it a bit. Initially, he had planned to take the opportunity of Oaks's return to visit him again and discreetly retrieve the listening device to collect as much information as possible.

But who knew that most of the time, the device actually recorded rolling sounds, cat meows, cat eating noises, cat purring, and the sounds of hitting various walls and furniture.

Realizing that Goose had discovered the listening device, Coulson didn't dare to go to the door again to find an opportunity to retrieve it.

When Oaks's voice reached Coulson the day before, he was somewhat relieved. Because Oaks seemed very rational and didn't seem to know who had planted the listening device.

"A misunderstanding?"

Behind the counter, Oaks looked at the newspaper. The New York Times had published Tony's New York Environmental Protection Foundation a week ago, and Antonio had subscribed to the newspaper for a month.

This matter had been brewing for a week, and Oaks, the mysterious "partner," had been exposed by major media outlets.

He had made a bet with Tony Stark and won, gaining the other's recognition. As a result, he piggybacked on Stark's top-level influence and became a renowned environmentalist in New York and even across the United States.

Moreover, he had a particularly high reputation, both in terms of technology and economic impact.

Although he didn't expect Tony to directly provide assistance, the current situation undoubtedly shifted S.H.I.E.L.D.'s focus from a low-key scientist to a high-profile public figure.

"Are you saying that as a senior employee of a high-ranking government department, you accidentally left a listening device in a shop where you were being well taken care of, and then spent a week without realizing it or retrieving it while listening to everyday life?"

Oaks narrowed his eyes and mocked, "Although I'm not a legal professional, I am a doctor after all. I don't think I look like a fool."

"Of course not."

Coulson's gentle smile had always boosted his success rate on missions, but he found that it seemed to have little effect on Oaks.

"Dr. Woods, we are not an ordinary government agency. In terms of jurisdiction, the level of cases we handle is higher than that of the FBI, CIA, and even the U.S. military."

"Well, the name is quite long, but I'll remember it."

Oaks raised an eyebrow. The other party had directly revealed his identity, indicating that he was in big trouble.

"Regarding the name, many people say the same thing, and we are considering improvements."

Coulson extended his right hand and handed over a business card.

"Dr. Woods, can we talk inside?"

"Forget about coffee for now."

Oaks stared at Coulson until the latter's expression became somewhat unnatural. Then he accepted the business card, stood up, hung the "Closed" sign on the store door, and walked towards the lounge.

"I hope you can give me a satisfactory answer, Agent."

"After all, in a country that claims to be the loudest advocate for human rights in the world, a little necessary facade still needs to be done."

Human rights? The war in Afghanistan hasn't even ended yet.

Coulson silently thought to himself as he followed Oaks into the lounge.

When he saw Goose jump into Oaks's arms and ask for pets, he almost couldn't control his expression.

Well, human rights must be protected in the face of a devourer, the only difference is that it's one's own human rights.

"Dr. Woods, once again, I apologize for the previous misunderstanding. Since you've made your position clear, let's get straight to the point."

After considering for a moment, Coulson spoke seriously, "Dr. Woods, both personally and on behalf of our Director, we greatly admire your professional achievements and sense of social responsibility."

"Due to some coincidental circumstances, we have learned that you recently adopted this orange cat—and from certain signs, this orange cat is a highly dangerous creature."

"Not in my presence."

Oaks scratched Goose's chin and smirked, "In my opinion, even a drug addict is more threatening than Goose. Instead of wasting time, why don't you go after a few drug cartels?"

"It seems that you are well aware that it is not an ordinary cat."

Coulson was mentally prepared. He took out a document and handed it to Oaks.

"While we are unsure how you discovered Goose's uniqueness, the information on this document contains the truth we have gathered. Please read it carefully."
