37 The Problems of Adamantium

[The Lab]

"Are you sure that there is no way to nullify this poison?" Essex shook his head at my question.

"This is an extremely toxic element. Without a healing factor, no one can survive it… And even with the healing factor, it will slowly start poisoning the blood circulation… Simply put, it's a slow poison and no matter what you do, it will kill you."

*Tsk* Adamantium is an element that is extremely important in the marvel universe. And its biggest flaw is the toxicity.

"So what's the solution… or the alternative? There has to be one…" The elements mixed in it are of toxic nature, so to remove the toxins… We will have to change the structure of the elements that constitute adamantium but… That is BS. Changing the properties of an element is near impossible. Because once we do that, the element won't be the same ever again.

"That will be difficult… extremely difficult." Essex sighed. "But why do you want to make a skeletal structure out of adamantium. I can see that it is extremely durable but your organs and skin will still be vulnerable."

True, Wolverine's healing factor made up for the muscles… but he was still weak.

"It is not for me. Once the serum is completed, this will be pretty much useless. No point in adding it to my body."

Essex didn't reply. He probably already knows that it's for James… or at least he knows that it is for some healing type mutant.

I am not worried about Essex… 'For now'... But I will have to deal with him in the future… just not now.

"Essex." He looked at me. "Why do you want to create a perfect mutant… yet you don't want to be one yourself."

Somehow his expression changed… to one that I never would have thought I would see in his face.

Regret… That's what I saw.

"You know very well that I am interested in killing the strongest Mutant." At least Apocalypse is the strongest… for now. "I have been fascinated by genetics, that's the reason I asked for immortality. I have no intention of becoming some sort of God. But what I want... is to see that peak of evolution."

*Sigh* Essex is an extremely complex character. A character who has always been portrayed as a villain… yet the cause of his evil nature... No one bothered to figure out.

He just wants his family… But his ways are evil… The methods he uses to get what he wants is exactly what makes him evil.

"Do you think that covering the metal with another one will prevent the toxins from leaking out… an element with extreme absorption properties should work."

He went deep into his thoughts. "Theoretically it sounds possible. But the problem arises when you search for such an element. There are a lot of metals that can absorb the toxins but… those metals are either non-malleable or they don't work together with adamantium."

This is a problem. I can think of a lot of elements that can help in removing… or at least covering the adamantium to prevent it from leaking the toxins. But none of them are within my reach.

Or we will have to come with an element of our own… Which will take ages.

"*Sigh* This again brings us back to square one. *Sigh*"

He shakes his head. "We will figure something out… eventually."

Very convincing Essex, very convincing.

[Later that day]

"Mom, more soup." She chuckled. "Alright, gimme a second."

Some things never change. No matter how rich you get, how many high-class restaurants you go to… No one can come even close to your mother's cooking.

It's not only about the taste… but also about the satisfaction. Eating something personally cooked by someone you love… brings a completely different joy, a feeling of satisfaction to oneself.

"I can't lie… You are one of the best when it comes to soup, auntie." Joel and I have dinner at our house sometimes… and today is one of those days.

"So how's your training going?" Joel grins at my question.

"Awesome. It was difficult at first… but now I have adapted to the training." He wants to join the military for some odd reason. And honestly, I cannot stop him. Everyone has something that they like and for him… it's this.

"I still cannot believe that you want to join the military." Mother comes with more soup as I requested. "Giving up millions of dollars to serve the country… that's admirable."

He simply chuckles.

Just don't let me down Joel… please don't let me down. I gave up on the surveillance. Might be an idiotic move… but I want to trust him. I don't want to be paranoid around everyone and Joel is the only friend that I have… Who I definitely don't want to lose.

Being suspicious is one thing… but being paranoid can be dangerous.

Maybe it's because of my past life… That I easily get attached to anyone that is 'family.' My past life is also the reason that I don't trust strangers easily.

The group that I was part of… taught us to never betray our family… yet never to trust anyone who is not family.

And that's exactly what I do. And Joel is like a brother to me… my family. So I do not want to be suspicious of him.

Do not break my trust Joel… do not.

"I heard that most of your projects that are under military supervision,  will soon be out for public use?" Mother asked and I nodded.

"Pretty soon… and once they are launched, it will be chaotic. I had to plan on handling the crowd since I started the project."

"I should be done with my training by then, so I will be there for you when you launch them for the public." Even if he goes to the military, I can trust that he won't favor them more than me.

"You are a major part of the Hanley Group of Industries… so without you. It will be quite difficult to handle the officials."

He chuckled. "Don't worry friend, I will be there for you."

Yeah… I can trust him.

[A/N: No it's not a flag... And btw, we are 'almost' halfway through before we reach the MCU timeline.

I wonder how many of you know that hulk had a massive harem in one of the timelines.
