123 Markus the TVA Agent?

[Null-Time Zone]

As the lights shimmered down, Markus was left baffled by the view of the mesmerising aurora flickering before his eyes.

The enthralling scenery nearly made him forget his problems… nearly.

"Quite majestic, isn't it?"

He kept staring at the aurora without flinching, spending his time in the Order had taught him a thing or two about people appearing without prior notice.

"It is."

It was far more beautiful than anything that he had seen on earth. But that did make him worry about his location.

"The aurora is the manifestation of the multiversal time stream." The voice explained. "Ever-changing…"

Markus nodded while keeping a smile on his face.

"But that does make me wonder… What gave me the authority to view such a magnificent thing?"

The man was impressed by Markus' ability to keep calm despite the situation.

But while Markus asked the man, the man decided to ignore his question.

"The time stream has no given shape or form, it merely takes the form of something that the viewer might be pleased to look at. Some see it as a waterfall, for some it's an ever-flowing river… and for some it's a spiral." He smiled. "In your case, it's an aurora."

"That does make me wonder." Markus frowned slightly. "Do you also see it as an aurora?"

The man chuckled. "Maybe? Or I might be viewing the time stream through your eyes."

"Fair."

Towards the aurora, a white light appeared which revealed a pathway.

"Follow me." The man said and walked towards the light.

Markus, who was sitting on the ground nodded before following behind him. As the two entered the light, the way to return vanished and multiple branching pathways opened from that single path.

"Each path leads to a certain timeline. And once you take a path, those will further deviate into even more pathways which lead to certain events." The man explained without stopping or slowing his pace. "Many get lost within the infinite pathways, so be careful."

Markus nodded as the two kept walking straight. With the passage of time, they came in front of many doors and the man looked at Markus.

"You can open them if you want."

Markus looked at the multicoloured doors and decided to choose the green one. As he pushed his hand against the door, it opened to reveal countless fairies playing in a flower garden.

"The fae, quite a rare species in your world. But in some other worlds or timelines, not so much." He looked at another door. "You can open the others if you want."

Markus nodded and pushed a blue door. This time it showed him a bunch of mermaids and mermen swimming within the depths of the oceans.

"The Mer-species." The man nodded. "They are present in your world but they stay hidden from human civilisation."

Markus went ahead and opened a purple door. And this time it shocked him.

"Ah, the punishment." The man laughed a little. "They are the ones that burned Joan of Arc alive and now they are being tortured with the eternal flames."

Markus was surprised by the cruelty shown by the beasts that burnt those humans alive… only for them to suffer without dying.

The door led to hell.

Calming himself down, he pushed a yellow door and this time, he saw a woman being prepared to be beheaded.

"That's Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's wife who is being punished on the charges of treason, adultery and incest." The man shrugged. "Whether she was truly guilty or not, history shall never find out."

Markus saw the woman getting beheaded before his eyes and all he could do was... stare. He noticed that while the woman was not beautiful by the sophisticated ancient beauty standards,  she was definitely gorgeous by today's standards.

"A secret between you and me." The man whispered. "She was innocent."

Taking a deep breath, Markus opened another door.

"Does each door get weirder than the other?" He asked which made the man laugh.

Behind the door were two men— one looked like Mobius and the other looked like Deadpool, waving at them.

"Sometimes, you can find exact replicas of certain timelines. And this happens to be one of them."

"You don't say…"

Sighing, Markus closed the door. "All of this is pretty interesting but I still haven't been told the reason that I was brought here."

The man nodded. "Forgive me for that. But first, let me introduce myself." Giving Markus a slight bow, the man said. "My name is Mobius M. Mobius, a senior executive at the Time Variance Authority."

Markus raised an eyebrow. "While I have a lot of questions, the one that interests me the most is your name. What exactly does the M in Mobius M. Mobius stand for? And please don't say it's Mobius."

The man seemed a bit embarrassed at the question. "I am afraid that it does stand for Mobius."

Markus deadpanned. "So your name is… Mobius Mobius Mobius?"

"Yes."

The two stared at each other for an entire minute. Seeing that Mobius was being serious, Markus sighed.

"So, what is the Time Variance Authority?"

Now this made Mobius grin. "Excellent question."

He pointed at the doors. "As you must have seen, there are countless timelines and each timeline moves according to a predestined sequence. And us beings at the TVA… which is short for the Time Variance Authority, are responsible for maintaining that sequence."

"So… anything that goes against that predestined sequence requires correction?"

Mobius shook his head at Markus' question. "No. Those sequences are quite complex and a single misstep can open an entirely new branch for that timeline." He pointed towards a door which opened to reveal Anne Boleyn escaping on horseback. "We do not interfere with those."

Markus seemed confused at his explanation. "Then what exactly do you fix?"

"Imagine if I took out Anne Boleyn from that timeline." He pointed at the door behind which she was beheaded. "And put her there." He pointed at the one where she escaped.

Markus instantly picked up. "So, you don't mess with things that happen within a fixed timeline but if they affect other timelines… then you step in."

"Precisely."

Markus took a minute to process the information. He seemed amazed by the things he saw within the TVA and it made sense as no human would have ever thought of some time police monitoring their actions.

"This is certainly a lot to process." He took a deep breath and looked at Mobius. "But my biggest question is… where exactly do I fit in all this?"

Mobius gave him a full-blown smile at the question. "On behalf of the TVA, I Mobius M. Mobius want you, Marcellus 'Markus' Hanley… to work for us."

Markus stared at Mobius with a weird face. "Come again?"
