1 Living in the Past

[A/N: MC will not know that this is the marvel world until chapter 5.]

"Marcel, it's time to wake up." The silvery voice of a woman came from downstairs.

"I am awake." Waking up groggily, I rubbed my eyes as a yawn escaped my lips.

Getting down from my bunk bed, I push open the windows taking in the fresh morning air.

"I am glad that our house is away from the polluted cities, especially from the pollution of this era."

When a 21st-century kid complains about pollution, you know that the pollution is 'bad.'

And yes, you didn't hear it wrong, I am from the 21s-century. I am not from this world… or at least not this time period.

I was just a simple thief who loved watching movies and anything related to action… before being pulled into this world.

I didn't have that so-called 'lucky transmigration' situation. All I remember was going to sleep and waking up in this world the next morning, which was a week ago.

I didn't die… or at least I think that I didn't. Never met any god, never got any overpowered gifts but I still ended up here.

"Breakfast is ready." The lovely woman who woke me up and was now calling me for breakfast was none other than my mother.

"Just a minute." I quickly put on a shirt before heading downstairs.

Our house is nothing special… But for someone who was a thief in his previous life and barely had a place which could be described as a house, this was pretty good.

Reaching down, I see my 'mother' in an apron, pouring orange juice.

"Good morning, Marcel." She walked towards me and gave a peck on my cheek. "Go and freshen up, we will have breakfast together."

"Alright." I pick up a towel from the basket before entering the bathroom.

After brushing my teeth and taking a quick morning shower, I proceed to comb my messy brown hair.

"Ah, I need to put on my glasses"

"Shouldn't you be on your way?" She raised an eyebrow at my nonchalant behavior.

"Yeah, but I don't have the first period today. So, I am in no rush." It's wartime, so barely any classes take place.

Especially since it's World War II and the school leaving age was quite low compared to the modern one.

Most of the schools were shut down and only a few were still functional, like mine.

"But, I need to meet up with Joel. So, I will be leaving now." I gave her a quick peck on the cheek before rushing out of the door.

Being reborn in the past, during a war… is not the best thing. Especially when you don't have a father and your mother has to shoulder all the burden.

Other than the house, we don't have much. Father died when I was a kid and since then, my mother has been taking care of all my needs.

And I am glad that the owner of this body appreciated her hard work and never asked for anything expensive.

I was an orphan and when I came into this world, the memories of the previous owner got implanted into my brain. Even if I don't have a father, I am grateful that I have a mother.

But being poor during the time of war sucks, especially when most of the prices are sky-high. I need to find a stable source of income.

I have knowledge about the future but absolutely zero money to invest in anything.

While I was thinking about my monetary problem a certain bulky guy gave me a slap on the back.

"What's with the serious look, Marc?" Turning around I find, Joel. Who 'apparently' is my best friend in this world.

"Nothing much. Just worried about my mother's health." Both of us sighed at that.

Both 'me' and Joel have been friends since we were 7 years old, So saying that we grew up together won't be a lie.

As kids, we used to play together in my house, since Joel's parents were never at home because of work. So my house was like a second home to him, and my mother treated him as her own son.

Him being worried about her was completely understandable.

"You know that you can always ask me for money." I instantly shook my head. He is rich, but also my friend. And rule number one of friendship is to never ask for money from your friends.

And I am not going to destroy this mask so early.

"You know me better than anyone else, Joel. I never like asking others for anything and neither do I like taking things for free." Which was true for the former host but not for me. But still, if I change my personality so early, it will be troublesome.

"*Sigh* In this world, being a good guy will lead you nowhere, my friend. If you want to become rich and strong, you have to get dirty." He was totally correct. The former Marcellus was an honorable guy, who never even lied to anyone. But I am not him, I am anything but honorable.

I stopped mid-track before looking straight into his eyes. "You are right. Maybe I should change."

A massive grin appeared on his face. "Finally getting onto the right track, eh? Well, we will think about it later. But now, we should go to school. This is the last week after all."

"Yeah."

[Evening]

Although our town was very far from the major cities, we still followed the rule of getting inside our houses before 8.

Currently, it was 6 so we had around an hour and a few minutes. During this time we were not even allowed to keep our lights turned on.

"Hey, Joel?" He looked towards me with a mouth full of cream buns.

"Yea?"

"Remember last week I asked you if you could help me open a bank account?" He nodded. "Do you think that you can help me open it this week?"

He raised an eyebrow. "I can but what's this about? I did tell you that you need to get dirty to become rich, but don't do anything stupid, pal."

I shook my head before a small laugh escaped my lips. "Don't worry, I won't. But for what I am planning, the account is necessary."

Quickly finishing his cream bun, he replied. "Alright. I should be able to help you set it up within this week. So, are you going to tell me your plan now?"

I smiled a little before saying. "Soon, my friend, soon."

I 'will' become powerful, and even this war won't stop me.
