26 Launching the Internet

[A few months later]

Currently, I am heading towards the military headquarters. Project I2 or the Internet is being launched and as the person in charge of creating it, I need to be there.

The project was delayed because Isenberg had to deal with some other things... But after that, it went smoothly.

Another good news is that the portable telephone or cellphone is finally completed but similar to the Internet, currently, the military is the only one who is allowed to access it.

After a year, portable phones will be made available for the public and the internet will be available for them in two years.

And now that the Hanley Industries have been established, my popularity has skyrocketed.

*Ring* *Ring*

"Yeah? Lester, I am almost there. Just keep them entertained till then." I said using the prototype phone that Lester gifted me.

It was more of a finished product but since he didn't launch it… he insisted on calling it a prototype.

His voice came from the other side. "Alright… But they are getting impatient."

"*Sigh* Tell them that I will be there in ten minutes."

Richard and  Maurice have become extremely popular because of their McDonald's… And also because I prevented other companies from starting a business within this time… Evil way.

But everything is fair in business.

[Military HQ]

"Is he here yet?" One of the military officials asked.

"He said that he will be here within ten minutes." Lester replied to the middle-aged man.

"Don't worry… He is always on time." Isenberg said. He has always favored Marcellus. "He said ten minutes… that means, he will definitely be here within ten minutes."

"You seem a bit too confident in him." He said but Isenberg shook his head.

"I am just stating the facts." He smiled.

And exactly ten minutes later… Marcellus entered the room.

"I told you that he is always on time."

[[Marcellus]]

"I told you that he is always on time."

Hmm? What's this about?

"I hope that I am not late, gentlemen." My question made Isenberg burst out laughing.

"No, you are perfectly on time." Isenberg laughed but the other official… who I believe is Tim Morgan, clicked his tongue.

"You would have been thrown out of this project if you were late." Tim's reply made me nearly burst out laughing.

Fire me? I am the one responsible for this project and if you throw me away… Good luck getting it to work, because the codes I installed cannot be solved by anyone other than me.

"That would have been very unfortunate. But anyways… we should start now." This statement made all three of them nod.

"So… who will go first. Lester or me?" Lester raised his hand at my question.

"I should be the one to go first." We all nodded at that.

Walking towards one of the tables he picked up a briefcase and slowly opened it. When it opened… it revealed a small brick-shaped gadget.

"Gentlemen, this is a mobile phone. A portable version of the telephone."

With my help, he was able to complete the mobile phone way before the actual time. And it was special because unlike the original one… which was supposed to be quite big and should have an antenna… This one was quite small and didn't have an antenna.

"Mr. Hanley, if you don't mind." He asked me.

"Of course, I don't." I said taking out the phone from my pocket.

Lester nodded. "That is the prototype that I gave Mr. Hanley." He smiled. "Now let me show you how this works."

He dialed a number on his phone. "Similar to the telephone… you need to dial a number assigned to each phone to reach them."

Both the Generals nodded.

"Now once you do that, you can easily call someone as long as they have a phone… doesn't matter if it is a telephone or mobile phone. It can connect to both ones."

He pressed the call button and after a few seconds, my phone started ringing.

"The best thing about this is that, you do not need to connect it with a cable to call someone. It uses frequencies to make the calls so as long as the phones can pick up that certain frequency, they will be able to receive the call."

Both the Generals looked extremely satisfied with the answer.

"The problem is that the range is quite short and we will need something to transmit the signals to long distances… probably towers."

Isenberg rubbed his chin but Tim immediately answered. "That will not be a problem. We can set up towers for that within our country… but when it comes to setting up those towers overseas… it won't be possible. No government would let another country build towers."

"That's where Mr. Hanley's idea comes into play." This made Tim raise an eyebrow. "Care to explain it, Mr. Hanley."

"Of course." I said with a smile. "That is through transmitting signals from space."

"Excuse me?" Tim looked at me as if I was an idiot.

"I know it sounds stupid… but it is plausible."

Isenberg remained silent but Tim frowned. "Explain."

I nodded. "We know that NASA is trying to launch a rocket into space… But without any success." All three of them nodded.

"But we all know that their advancements are going really well and they will succeed within a decade." Again they agreed.

"Now my idea was to build a signal station in space."

"That's ridiculous. Going to space and building something there are two completely different things." Tim said.

"Indeed… it will be extremely difficult but not impossible. As long as NASA succeeds in going to space… this idea is viable."

Isenberg and Tim looked at one another.

"We can launch an already built signal transmitter to do that… and once it succeeds… We will have access throughout the globe."

"How long will it take?" Isenberg asked.

"It all depends on NASA. As long as they can build a spacecraft… we will be able to make it work." I won't be interfering with space crafts. The rocket launch will take place normally without much interference.

"Very well. Now that this problem is out of the way… let's talk about your internet." Isenberg said which made me smile.

"Very well General, follow me." I walked toward the lab where I was previously working on my projects.

"This is the setup." I point towards the humongous computers that were built around the room. "This is where we can control things."

These computers were far more advanced than any other computer built so far. These were supercomputers.

"How does it work?" His question made my smile widen.

"It is very simple actually." I turned one of the computers on. "Similar to the phones, these computers are able to send and receive… but in this case it is data."

"Explain."

I nodded. "Computers, as we know, are great at storing data. But the problem arises when sending or receiving it. It is not possible normally… but with the help of the internet, we can easily solve that problem."

Saying this, I start typing a message on the computer. "Let me show you."

I turn on another computer. "Now, as you can see. On one computer I have typed a single message but I want to transfer it to another computer."

"Continue."

"Normally it shouldn't be possible. But with the help of the internet, it is." I pressed send and within a second the message appears on the other computer. "This is how helpful the internet is, gentlemen."

All of them looked shocked. "This is amazing."

"Indeed it is." I smiled. "But this is not the only thing that the internet is capable of doing." This piqued their curiosity.

"What do you mean?" Surprisingly, it was Lester who asked the question.

"Quite simple. Other than messaging, it can also request for data." I chuckled looking at the curious faces. "Let me show you."

I typed 'How old is Lester.' And after pressing the enter button, the answer appeared instantly, surprising all of them.

The answer was 54.

"H-How." Lester was shocked.

"It is very simple. I had already saved that data within the computer in the servers… and so when I asked the question… it showed us the already saved answer."

I looked at the Generals. "Also there will be multiple servers… so even if a few are destroyed by the enemies… there won't be much inconvenience and the process will continue like usual."

"This is brilliant! This is revolutionary!" Tim was beyond amazed. "I thought that Isenberg was overpraising you but it turns out that this wasn't the case. You are a genius!" He exclaimed.

"Thank you for the praise, General."
