7 Chapter 7

- Commander, we can't! - my deputy shouted.

— We can if you go away and leave me here alone, " I retorted.

— But this is suicide! - he still did not give up.

— Not for me.

— I'm with you, Commander!

- Argh! Do what you want, but make sure that our fighters survive! - I waved my hand at him.

- There is!

Soon most of the soldiers were able to retreat, but some particularly intelligent individuals who want to fulfill their duty decided to stay with me. I have already had many fights with many of them, and now they did not want to leave me alone, and they know that it is almost impossible to kill me. Too much for me, the heroes were found. After this mission, I will give them a beating and send them as guards to my company.

- So, fighters! I don't know why you stayed with me, but after this task you will be remembered as heroes and it doesn't matter whether posthumously or alive, the main thing is that you will be remembered! But if you want there to be a second option, then stay behind me — I will take all the damage on myself! And now... — here enemy fighters burst into our improvised shelter — - Into battle!

There were twenty of us. Against their... large number. I don't even know how many there were, but I personally destroyed more than three thousand in that massacre. In the end, the explosion even managed to completely destroy my arm and two legs. If it hadn't been for this explosion, none of our people would have died, and so... what happened happened.

Even though my regeneration was working at full capacity, I still couldn't save anyone. While I was lying in the pit after the explosion, the others were driven into one of the buildings, which was filled with flammable gas. I almost managed to get a soldier who decided to blow up everything there, but I didn't have enough for a fraction of a second. There was an explosion and I was thrown ten meters away.

It seems to me that this was the first time I released my inner beast and began, literally, tearing enemies apart. He stopped only when help came, and the enemy soldiers began to retreat. When I ran into that very building, I found only one living person, and even then, he was already with one foot in the grave.

- Commander... kha... - the survivor croaked.

- Shut up, Joseph — I sat down next to him, — it's contraindicated for you to talk right now.

The entire body of my deputy was burned, only one half of his face remained intact, as it was able to protect the helmet that fell on it. He has only a couple of minutes left to live.

- Komkh... andir... I have ... ha... there is a request... for you... ha... — I was silent, - You can... kha ... tell my... pha ... wife that I loved her... let her ... not grieve ... kha-kha-kha... - his condition was deteriorating faster and faster — I was glad... to fight next to you... in a hundred and seventh ... mom ... coma... - here he paused, not saying the last words, but I already understood what he was talking about.

- All right, Rogers, I'll give this to your wife…

I knew that my subordinate was supposed to become a father, and this made the situation doubly complicated, since I would have to report the death of my husband to his pregnant woman. I could send letters of regret to other families of the victims, but that's when a dying soldier personally asked me… I'll just do it out of principle and respect.

The event itself took place on the eighth of May of the eighteenth year, which was soon called "The Day of Twenty Heroes". Only nineteen of them died, and I simply refused to talk about what happened, and then I died altogether. That's what they wrote in the report, but in fact I left myself, having previously found the creature that arranged all this. Naturally, I killed him. That was the end of my revenge, and I faked my death-I was listed under a different name.

I was only able to tell his wife personally about the death of Joseph Rogers in July. At the same time, he returned to Brooklyn, as it turned out that she lives there. She was not at home, but after asking the neighbors, I learned that… Sarah Rogers is in the hospital right now. She has gone into labor and is due to give birth soon. It turned out strange, but there was a girl in my hospital, and I went there.

When I arrived, I found out that Sarah Rogers had already given birth to a boy, whom she named Steve. Having decided not to disturb her at this time, I thought I would come tomorrow so that she could rest. On the way out, I ran into Victoria, who immediately attacked me with kisses. Well, yes, we haven't seen each other for a year.

I couldn't come tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow. In general, I was freed from my sister's tenacious hands only after a week. Leaving her to rest after another stormy night, I still went to fulfill my promise to Joseph Rogers. It seems to me that the girl was very surprised when an unknown man came to her room, and even without asking. Well, I'm already used to the fact that I don't need to ask something before entering.

- Hello, Mrs. Rogers, - I said.

- Hello, um... - the girl with the child in her arms hesitated.

- James, James Howlett, - he introduced himself, - I own this hospital, or rather, I founded it.

- Huh? - she said, surprised.

— Do not be surprised, — I smiled kindly,-I came to you to convey the words of your husband and express my sincere condolences on his account.

- You…

- Let me tell you everything from the very beginning... - I sat down on a chair and began the story, omitting some details.

At the end of the story, the girl could not stand it anymore and tears flowed down her face. When I finished my story, I decided to leave the room so that she could be alone. There was a nurse outside the door.

— How long have you been standing here? - I'm asking.

- From the beginning, - she said.

- Oh, - I sighed.

— It's not your fault, and you did everything you could then, - she put her hand on my cheek.

— I know, but it doesn't make me feel any better, - I looked into her eyes.

- Let's relax, go to a cafe, a cinema, and whatever you want! - my sister dragged me.

On this day, I decided that I would look after Sarah Rogers and her son. I will offer her a job at my hospital, and she will always be in my sight. Only after that, the feeling of guilt left me a little, and the sixth sense said that I had done the right thing. Sometimes I even visited them. Sometimes even my sister came to them with me. We just talked about insignificant topics and drank tea, which Sarah turned out to be delicious.

After a while, Vika began to visit Rogers more often than I did. After all, they became friends on one interesting ground for both of them — children. Yes, the two of them took care of little Steve. I even felt somehow ashamed that my sister was wasting all her maternal instinct not on her own child, but I remembered what threatens this world in the future and about my goal — to become strong enough so that no one dares to touch my family.
