4 Emergency

Davian Randell's grey eyes were focused on his reflection in the mirror with a dull expression as he buttoned up his long sleeve t-shirt. His hand adjusted a few of the stubborn strands of his coffee brown hair. Soon, he was done dressing up. He shut his door and walked towards the sitting room of the two bedroom apartment he shared with his mother.

"Mom?!, I'm off to work," he announced, a middle aged woman of about fifty years of age walked out of the kitchen.

"You won't have breakfast?" She asked.

"No mom. I'll eat at the office, I have to go now," he replied and kissed the woman on her forehead.

"Okay, bye," the woman responded looking a bit worried about her son.

"I'll be fine. See you later," Davian assured and left. He got into his car at the parking lot and drove off to work.

He arrived at a building and parked his car at the parking lot of the building. He walked inside and took the elevator going up floor where his office was, where the small advertising firm he owns and runs was.

"Hey guys," he greeted his employees who were also his friends. They were four in number, Sarah, Ray, Lucas and Rebecca.

"Hey Davian," they chorused.

"How are you guys doing?" he asked.

"We're good," Rebecca, Becca for short, answered for everyone.

"Sarah, please get me breakfast...the usuals. Have you guys eaten yet?, buy some for yourselves too," he added.

"Okay boss," Sarah got up to go.

"Here are the bills for the month, Davian," Becca gave a couple of letters to Davian. He only opened a few and sighed.

"The bank is threatening to close the firm down, if we don't pay them the loan," Ray informed. Sarah immediately walked out to get the food.

"Becca give me some good news already. How is the deal with Reyes Corp. going?" Davian said.

"I submitted our firm's resume for the application but nothing yet," she replied.

"Can you arrange a meeting for me and-"

"We'll have to talk to her secretary first, she's a friend of mine. Her boss is a really busy person," Becca interrupted him knowing what he wanted to say.

"Then let's do that, in the afternoon." He replied and walked into his office. He sat down on his chair, he leaned a little on it as he stared at the ceilings. His hands went to his coffee brown hair and he squeezed it, he shut his eyes as his brows creased.

Why was everything falling apart? Five years ago when he started this firm, things were blooming but now...

His firm was at the verge of going under, his mother was sick and in need of urgent surgery, these two things were all he's got-The only things he cherished. He needs a miracle, a deal that would change his situation for good.

In the afternoon, Becca and Davian went to Reyes Corp. together to see Emily, Silvia's secretary.

"I'm sorry, Becca. But Ms. Reyes didn't approve of your resume. There's really nothing I can do," Emily said.

"At least arrange a meeting with me and your boss. Let me talk to her," Davian pleaded.

"Davian..." Emily mumbled. She might get in really big trouble for this but how can she say no to these pleading faces.

"Okay. She really doesn't have time to attend insignificant meetings out of the blue especially since she's the one hiring. It will be better you just see her in her office, she's free but I can't promise anything. Excuse me," Emily said.

"Thank you so much, Emily," Becca said.

"Thank you, Emily," Davian added.

Emily went to inform her boss about them, to her surprise she agreed to see them. Emily escorted them to her office.

"Have your seats?" Silvia said to them and they both sat down.

"Hmm hmm, begin. What brought you here?" Silvia asked.

"Uhm Ms. Reyes. I'm Davian Randell and this is my secretary Rebecca Smith. We're from 3D advertisement firm. We submitted our resume for the job application but we never got a feedback," Silvia almost laughed. Desperate people were desperate people, she thought.

"And didn't it occur to you that you never got a feedback because your firm wasn't chosen for the job?" she said.

"Yes but-"

"Mr. Randell I have better things to do. You should take your leave now," she cuts him off. Davian felt dejected, she didn't even give him the chance to win her over.

"And Mr. Randell?" Silvia called when they were about to leave.

"Isn't your firm bankrupt?" she asked, but it sounded more like a statement for confirmation instead of a question.

How did she...He trailed off in his thoughts.

"I always do a background check on things that catches my eyes," she answered as if she read his mind.

"Your firm has a good resume but I only deal with big catches as my company is one. I would have given you the deal if you weren't bankrupt," she added.

"Ms. Reyes, it doesn't matter if my firm is bankrupt or not. We'll still do the job excellently," Davian tried to convince her.

"Yeah. But I'm sorry, the job is no longer available," she said to them. Not having any thing to say next they walked out of her office. They didn't stop by Emily's and Emily didn't call them when they passed by. She knew it didn't go well.

Davian kicked his car's tyre in frustration.

"Take it easy Davian," Becca tried to comfort him. He rested his head on the top of his car and Becca placed her hand on his back as she patted him.

"It's going to be alright," she added.

"No it's not. Both my mother and my firm are dying and there's nothing I can do about it," he responded.

"You've done all you can, it's not your fault," Becca said and Davian's phone rang. He picked it up.

"Hello..." He said and what he heard next made his face turn so pale as if he had just seen a ghost. His phone fell out of his hands and Becca caught it just in time.

"What's wrong Davian?" Becca asked.

***

Davian had been called up by a friend who was a doctor. She said his mother had just been rushed to her hospital.

Davian drove his car so fast that Becca who had accompanied him almost threw up. They rushed into the hospital when they got there. "Please, Elizabeth Randell has just been rushed to this hospital, where is she?" He asked the nurse in the reception.

"Davian..." His friend called.

"Cia, how's my mom?, Where's she?" He asked.

"Follow me. Her condition escalated at once, she's in the ICU because it's critical. She needs surgery urgently!" Cia said to her friend, who she has known since college.

They got to the room where his mom was but they didn't enter, they just watched her through the glass wall.

Davian felt himself shatter into a million pieces at the sight of his mother.

"Davian, you know I would have helped you if it was up to me, I'm just the head doctor here," Cia said.

"It's okay, Cia. You've done a lot by taking care of the hospital bills and all your support over the years has been enough," he responded.

"I will try to raise half of the money for the surgery," Cia continued.

"And I'll support in whatever way I can. You know I'm not rich," Becca added.

"I can't let you girls do all that. You guys have your own lives and problems to deal with. I don't want to burden you guys anymore," he objected.

"You're not burdening us, right Becca?" Cia said and Becca nodded.

"No Cia. Cia?, can I pay the surgery fee in installments?" He asked.

"I wish you could, but no. Maybe you can talk to the owner, I'm friends with her, so I can help to convince her as well," Cia suggested.

"Really?" Davian responded and Cia nodded. She collected her phone from her white coat.

"I'll call her now," she said.

"Thank you, Cia," both Becca and Davian responded at the same time.

Soon, Cia was back.

"Let's wait for her outside, she said she won't waste any time as she's in a hurry," Cia said. "Okay," Davian replied and they all went outside to wait for Cia's friend.

Few minutes later, a black SUV was seen in sight and it came to park in front of them. Silvia got out of the car, worry in her eyes.

"What was the emergency, Cia?!" Silvia asked. Davian and Becca were utterly flabbergasted.
