Chapter 48
Mrs Hugh hugged Laura and thanked her and Edward while Mrs Brook looks on unsatisfied, Laura saw her from the corner of her eyes and turned to her sharply visibly angry.
"Mrs Brook, I left my mother-in-law in your care and didn't except something like this to happen" she said and Mrs Brook smiled nervously.
Laura originally planned to introduce Mrs Hugh to people of the highest class and let them know that she is not in their class and even though she except something like this to happen but she trusts Mrs Brook to help her.
"I was shocked by everything the girl said and couldn't react quickly" she lied
"Mrs Brook isn't at fault" Mrs Hugh also speak up on her behalf. Laura knows she is lying but because of Edward she doesn't want to create any scene or accuse his mother so she let thing be and decide to stay with Mrs Hugh at the party for a little bit before leaving.
Edward noticed the change in her mood and followed after the both of them ignoring the shout from other girls to talk to them or give them his attention
"What are you doing following me? Your brides are waiting" Laura said sarcastically but he smiles instead not taking any offense.
Diana and her gang saw the scene and it is clear that since Laura entered, Edward hasn't given any girl attention except her and he is even gentle and smiles at her.
Diana whispered into Kayla's ears and she bought out her phone to take pictures cropping out Mrs Hugh from the pictures.
"If you are angry with my mom, are you also angry with me?" He asked gently but Laura didn't reply
"Can we talk then?" He asked again and Laura stops walking then tells Mrs Hugh to wait for her and took a few steps away with Edward.
"Am sorry about how my mom behaved, am sure she doesn't mean any harm" he apologized but at the same time defend his mother's action
"Whatever you say" Laura retorted. Edward laughed silently and reach out his hand to touch her hair then plays with it slowly.
"Are you going to continue sulking? It's my birthday and you didn't even get me a present" he said and Laura calmed down remembering that she actually forget to get a present for him
"Don't worry, I will sent you your present tomorrow morning" she replied
"No, that wouldn't be necessary. I want something else for my birthday present"
"What is it?"
"A date, go on a date with me tomorrow. It's Friday so you should be done with work earlier" he said and Laura took a few seconds to think about it
"Don't say no, this is the first time I will ask something of you" he said again and Laura nodded in agreement.
"I will call you when am done with work" the both of them keep silence for another few seconds before Edward break the silence again
"Do you know…" He started but Laura stops him before he completes his sentence
"I have to go" she told him and she could see a look of sadness in his face
"So soon?"
"Yes, I have to stop keeping you away from your possible wife and besides, my husband doesn't like for me to stay outside late" she explained
"Does he restrain you?" He asked raising his voice
"Yes, since I became pregnant he became overprotective" Laura said dropping the news about her pregnancy to him. Laura could see his countenance changed and his face looks gloomy and disappointed.
He move away from her a little bit and swallowed hard then tells her bye and offered to drop her but Laura told him it's okay since she came with a chauffeur.
She bade him bye and went to meet Mrs Hugh who is talking happily to some ladies and apologized before taking her away and leaving the party altogether.
Inside the car, Laura is feeling very tired and a bit uncomfortable. She didn't manage to grab anything to eat and feels really hungry. Mrs Hugh noticed her frowning face and brought out a well packed cake from her bag and gave it to her.
She had noticed that Laura didn't touch any food and only drank some water so she asked one of the waiter to wrap some cake for her.
Laura took the cake and thanked her before she start to eat but suddenly feels nauseous and shout at the drive to stop then she opened the door and vomits.
Mrs Hugh quickly rushed to her side and held her then gets some water from the bottle for her to rinse her mouth and pat her back gently
Laura finished vomiting and feels relieved but more hungry, Mrs Hugh slowly pull her back in to the car asking how she is feeling.
"I don't even understand" she answered and rest her head on the back of the seat.
"Are you pregnant?" Mrs Hugh voiced out the question she has been wanting to ask and Laura nodded her head in affirmation.
"How could you not eat then!" She snapped at her and instruct the driver to hurry to a close restaurant close by where they sell some steak.
The driver quickly got them there and Mrs Hugh held her as she comes out of the car despite Laura's protest that she can walk on her own. Mrs Hugh ordered some food and even wanted to feed her but Laura strongly refused and start to eat the food on her own.
Mrs Hugh is excited at the news of her pregnant and worried at the same time for her health, she has gone to the party tonight because of her and she feels bad that despite her stupid behavior Laura still took her as a mother.
She held Laura's hand across the table witha loving gaze and thanked her onec again, Laura stopped eating for a minute and held her also
"It's nothing" she replied
"No, am grateful because Chris didn't end up with Mira but you instead" she said and release her hand so she can continue to eat.
When she was thrown out of her family because she choose to marry Chris's father instead of the rich heir her parents as arranged for her, she wanted to go back multiple times for money but her pride won't let her then after sometimes, her brother took over everything and didn't give anything to her so she allowed Chris go to him when he insisted on leaving and get something out of everything her brother got.
Everyone around her as seemly forgotten that she was once a princess herself and always treat her like a plaque but no one did that to Laura's mother because her parents accepted her choice as she is the only child of her mother.
She feels it's unfair how life treat them differently even though they had the same story, she sighed and came out of her deep thoughts then noticed Laura is almost done with her food
"When did you discover you were pregnant" she queried suddenly and Laura looked at her surprised
"Last week, the baby is three weeks old" she answered
"Really!?" Mrs hugh exclaimed, her face lit up with joy
"Then you should have been more careful and take care of your health. I will send the nanny that took care of me during Chris's pregnancy over to the house to help you too" she would have loved to do that herself but Laura might not feel comfortable with her living with them and also staying with a young couple isn't ideal
"Okay mom, I will listen to you" Laura agreed immediately.
"You should also have the wedding soon before your tummy gets bigger" she added and Laura smiled happily, nodding her head in response.
"Am done" she told her after drinking some water and stood up to leave but she pulls her down to her seat
" You should let the food settle down in your stomach before riding in a car" she scold sweetly to Laura's surprise and she smiled feeling like a child again
The both of them soon set out back to their respective homes and Mrs Hugh insist on Laura dropping off first so she can rest early
"You should come visit us when you are free" she said before the driver drives away and Laura enters to meet with a restless Chris waiting for her…
