1 Meeting the new boss

It was past midnight when it happened.

The night was quiet and slightly cold. The light coming through the window was more than enough for Mika to see what was happening.

In one moment he was peacefully sleeping, just like any other person at city A, and in the other he was being pushed away from his dream by a heavy weight in his legs.

He slowly opened his eyes, too tired to move.

Right in front of his face was... a bear ?

No, it was more like one of those cute shopping mascots costumes.

"What the hell...?" he mumbled slowly.

That was when the costume did something that finally made Ian realize in what kind of situation he was now. It spoke.

"So you're finally awake, I'm so happy !" the thing said.

It's voice was weird and vaguely masculine, as if it was coming from a machine instead of a human being and the bear spoke as if he was talking to a children in some very weird kids show.

"How the hell did you got into my house ?" Mika screamed.

He looked around, trying to see something that could be used as a weapon but there was nothing.

He was starting to regret not playing baseball, or tennis, or doing any sports at all because at least he would be strong enough to beat this creepy guy-bear-thing.

"I just got through the window," the bear answered. "And please speak more quietly, we don't want your parents to wake up."

"What did you do to my parents ?" at this point Mika was almost crying.

"Nothing, don't worry."

"Then why you-"

"My name is Ezra Heilig," the be-Ezra said. "Are you... Mika Niemi ?"

"Yes."

"Great," by this point Ezra's voice was start to make Mike jump through the window. "Because I'm here to offer you a job !"

Mika just couldn't believe in his own ears

"Isn't that cool ?" was like if Ezra didn't even noticed the other man having breakdown right in front of him. "We will be best friends, It must be destiny for sure !"

For a moment the two of them just sat there, staring at each other.

"So what do you say ?" Ezra finally broke the silence.

Mika was tired, he just want go back to sleep. In fact, he wasn't even sure if he was asleep at that very moment.

Because there was absolutely no way someone he had never seen before, had broke into his house in the middle of the night, just to offer him a job he had never searched for.

Mika could feel his head starting to hurt.

He raised his hand, pinched his nose and closed his eyes.

"If you came here to offer me a job," he said very slowly. "Then why didn't you came during the day? Why did you broke into my house?"

Even with the costume on Mika could say the other man was genuinely surprised by the question.

"Well, I just thought that the costume would call to much attention during the day." so he did realize that thing was weird after all. "And I was scared that if you saw me dressing like this during the night you would just call the police or something before we got to talk..."

Is not like Mika could denial any of those things.

But still... why the costume anyway ?

"And why shouldn't I just push you through the window right now, since this is how you got in ?" now Mika was starting to believe this was indeed a dream. There was no way a real person would be this stupid.

"Because I could fall to my death ?" for the first time that night, Mika's uninvited guest sounded apprehensive. "And then you would go to jail ?"

That was right. Mika read once that a thousand years ago people used to live in small houses near the ground. But now was 3068, and most cities looked like giant mazes of connected skyscrapers.

Mika lived at the 290th floor.

Even with the hallway being right under the window there was still a chance of that guy tripping over the railing.

And if someone found out Mika was the one who pushed him things would get messy.

"Ok," he said, finally deciding to get up. "Just wait here while I call the police then."

"Wait, wait, wait !" Ezra just threw himself at Mika, making the two of them fall to the ground. "Aren't you even going to listen first ? Aren't you at least curious ?"

"Not at all," Mika answered trying to get up. "Work someone like you... will probably land me in jail quicker than if I just pushed you over the window !"

"That's what you think of me ?!"

"Yes !"

"That hurts you know," Ezra was starting to get tired, Mika used that chance to kick him off. "Ouch, how many employees can say they were personally invited by the boss ? And you treat me like this ?"

"I don't want a boss like you !"

"We pay well !"

Mika stoped.

"How well ?"

"15.000$ a month."

"Ok, I agree."

"Wait, but you don't even know what the job is yet..." now that things had calm down both of them were able to get off the ground and sit back in the bed.

"I don't care." Mika answered. "For 15.000$ a month ? I would kill someone if you asked me to."

"Well that is good then." Ezra said with a happy voice. "Because I might need you to... Ah, we better discuss it tomorrow. Or would it be today ?"

"Anyway here is the address." Ezra handed him a small piece of paper. "Just go there around... 16:00 pm, is that good ? You don't have classes after 13:00 pm on Thursdays right ?"

What ? How did this guy-

"Oops, hehe. Looks like I have spoke too much..."

"Wait why you-"

"See you later ~!

And with that Ezra jumped off the window before Mika could do anything else.

But well, he wanted a job anyway, he could at least take a look right ?
