1 Strange New World

Magus in Marvel

Chapter 1

By: Pineappl3

I looked down at the magic circle inscribed on the floor around me. It held a radius of exactly 5 thousand millimeters. Inscribed meticulously over a period of twenty years using the rarest of materials found on Azum, it was the most expensive magical experiment to date.

Along with the help of my assistant Malcom, I, Baldur Mikaelson, have finally created a transportation circle. I smiled at the sight, my life work was finally finished. The culmination of 253 years of studying the arcane arts and countless hours theorizing the possibility of bending time and space all lead to this day.

It all started with a fixation. In my youth I was but a wide eyed Apprentice Magus, all things amazed me and I stopped at nothing to find out the secrets of this world. After becoming an Archmagus and with the assistance of the Grand Library, a source of knowledge so great it drove its own creator mad, I learned everything anyone, somewhere in my world knew. Be it present or past, it was all recorded.

Saddened by how easy it was to learn the secrets of the world, I sought a new source. A new world. Day and night I tirelessly worked on my project, and today it was finally complete. I settled myself and prepared the last item.

In my hands I held a dragon's heart, to be precise the only dragon's heart. It was a creature I had brought back from extinction and raised meticulously for this day. Dragon hearts were a notorious mana source, one that powered the world's greatest creations. From the floating city of Andleph to the seal that held the Demonic God, it was a priceless treasure.

"Master, I still think it is a waste to use such an item on this project of yours. We still do not know if it would work." Malcolm's sneer was so evident I practically felt it. He was a good kid, but he still had a lot to learn.

Just shy of 91 years old, Malcolm was a youthful man whose prowess with a sword was matched by that of his magical might. What he lacked in foresight and brains, he made up in pure unadulterated talent.

"You know nothing Malcolm, this will change the world as we know it. If my calculations are correct, this world holds beings stronger than our gods. Think of the knowledge and resources we could acquire! Your short-sightedness saddens me."

I shook my head in disappointment. I had known he was afraid of my project, but I needed a helping hand. It was thanks to my promise of giving him my amulet, that he agreed. Named Nox after the black skies, it was an artifact that to the knowledge of others brought me uncountable victories at night.

Unknown to all but myself, the artifact was fake. It had been a ruse I created ages ago to hide my real strength and see where my true allies lied. "Let us begin." Wanting to get the ritual over so I could get rid of Malcolm for good, I began pouring my magic into the dragon's heart.

"Once I fill this with my power, you need to create the barrier. Don't forget what we've been practicing." Focusing solely on the heart in my palms, I channeled all of my mana into it. With a pulse, the heart came alive. Smiling, I proceeded to the last step. Placing the object in my hands at the center of the circle, I began to make my way to the outside of the magic circle.

"@#$%^&%#@@$$@%#=+-=-=!@#$$%"

My eyes widened as I turned to look at Malcolm. "You fool! Why would you cast the barrier before I got out! Hurry and undo it!" I quickly ran to the edge, and started pounding on the transparent wall that surrounded the circle.

"It was doomed to fail, old man. I sabotaged the circle ages ago. Now once the circle goes critical and all that remains are your ashes, I'll finally have both the amulet and the heart. Too bad you have no mana left, or like the magical items I covet, you would survive the blast. Alas you are the true fool."

"Luckily for me this goal has made you narrow-minded. If it was 20 years ago before you asked me to help, I'm afraid you would have seen my plot miles away! You have no one to blame but yourself."

I looked at my assistant with eyes burning in hatred. He looked at me with the same smug look I had on my face not too long ago. I was disappointed, not in him for betraying me, but in myself. He was right, I knew it as my last moments ticked by.

Electing to not reply to him, I closed my eyes. Did I regret things? Yes. Would I do things differently? Who wouldn't? I had lived long enough though. I was at peace with my death. My amulet was fake, and the heart was tied to my blood. I guess I got the last laugh.

As the magic circle overloaded with energy and burst with a blinding light I smiled. 'I might have failed, but at least I was the greatest Archmagus this world has ever seen.' I felt a searing pain for mere seconds, before nothing. I opened my eyes, and I was treated to a strange sight.

'Who paints a ceiling?' I looked around and found myself in a room faintly lit by light streaming in through a window. It was small and although I didn't recognize the style of furniture, I could tell it was a bedroom. A strange object spun quickly on the ceiling in the center of the room and I could tell a cool air flowed from it.

'Hmm, I've never seen a magical item that produces cold air this way.' Interested in studying the foriegn object, I reached out to touch it. Surprised by the sudden dull pain in my hand from nearing too close, I regained my wits.

'Firstly, ow. Secondly, I should probably figure out where I am first. I wonder how I survived that explosion. I'm definitely the type of guy to look a gift horse in the mouth. There is an answer and eventually I will find it. That or die trying. Although that might have to wait till I regain my mana.'

Putting aside the strange object for now, I took in the sight of the room. Behind me was the bed I had woken up in and in front was a wooden desk that floated in the air. 'What a simple but effective use of a common resource. Two iron pieces hold this whole thing in the air.'

With an instant but shallow understanding of the desk, I moved on to inspecting the rest of the room. To my left were two doors, both of which I would explore after inspecting the rest of the room. Off to my right was a window. Taking a glance outside of it, I took in the sight of another building across an alleyway.

Noticing nothing strange other than metal stairs affixed to the side of the building and boxes on the ground floor, I turned my attention back to the two doors. Approaching the leftmost door, I reached out towards the handle and turned it.

With the door now open, I could faintly make out shapes in the dim light. 'If I had any mana I could cast a simple light spell. I wonder why it is taking so long to regain even the slightest bit.' Walking into the small room, I let my vision adapt to the light.

Even with the minimal light, I could tell how expensive this single room was. In front of me was a wall of glass. Attached to it was a metal rod, and through the glass I could see 3 walls of tiles. Coming from the right wall was an oddly shaped metal handle, and much higher up was another metal fixture. Although I could not tell what their use was, my curiosity was piqued.

Turning to my right I watched my own eyes go wide. Staring back at me through the largest mirror I had ever seen was my own face. It was not the me of yesterday though. No, what I was seeing was what I had looked like over 200 years ago.

With tousled golden hair and eyes of green, the biggest dead giveaway was the scar given to me by my drunkard Father as punishment for drinking his ale right above my brow. Upon becoming an official Magus, it was the first thing about myself that I had changed with magic. Now though I could care less about the blemish.

'What in the 43 Hells is going on? Have I gone back in time? No. It couldn't be. I've never been to a place like this.' I touched my scar, tracing it from my eyebrow to my hairline. 'This would explain the lack of mana gathering. This body is indeed my old one. I thought I was just weak, but this explains everything.'

I had yet to undergo a mana baptism, at least this body had. I was curious, and excited. 'So many things to uncover!' My lips grew into a smile and I was lost in thought about all these strange things around me and happening to me.

"Balder! Get your ass down here!"

I lifted my eyebrow, a puzzled expression taking hold of my face. Who is that? I've never heard that voice in my life.' Determined to ignore it and keep exploring my surroundings, I kept inspecting the small room I was in.

'What a strange chair, It houses a hole at the bottom. Is this for waste? Ah! I got it. This must be a very advanced chamber pot. Good thing I found it, I was needing to go. Hmm. This seat is quite comfortable. Now, how do I get rid of the piss?'

Getting up from the chamber pot, I searched for the magical trigger to get rid of the waste and found a lever that protruded from the strange backing of the pot. Wiggling it a bit gave me the knowledge of the direction it moved. I pulled it downwards and water began to fill the pot.

After seconds my waste was gone, and the pot returned to its previous state. 'Now that I think about it, these clothes are quite strange. I don't think a fabric like this exists in Azum. I must be in a strange . . . wait a moment.'

I became shocked at my sudden realization. 'It. . . worked? That can be the only explanation. With the Grand Library I would have known if such a civilization existed in my world. That means I've succe-'

"BALDER MICHAELSON! GET YOUR ASS DOWNSTAIRS THIS INSTANT."

I walked out of the small room, and back into the bedroom I was in before. I came face to face with the insolent wench that had not only mispronounced my name, but also thought they held enough authority to command me.

"Who dares to sh-" Before I could even finish my sentence I was grabbed by the ear and dragged from the room. I had no time to process the events taking place before I was down a flight of stairs in a large living space.

"I've no idea where you get the nerve to ignore your Mother," the rude woman commented as she moved me through the luxurious mansion I was in. 'Mother? My Mother died giving birth to me.'

She finally let go of my ear as we neared a large wooden door. "I swear, just because the doctor tells you that you only have a year to live, you think you can do anything you want without consequences. You may be fine with dying, but as your Mother I will make sure you survive."

It was now I noticed the stream of tears flowing from the woman's eyes, they were filled with sorrow, and quivered every time they passed my form. 'A year to live? What is going on here?'

={db}=

I tapped my pen rhythmically on my desk. I had been in this world, Earth, for a week now. It was a wondrous world that advanced from technology and had seemingly no magic. I was Balder Michaelson now, although in a few months once I was 18 I would change it back to how it should be.

From my understanding, my spell had worked. Sort of. Instead of opening a portal to this world, whatever Malcolm did changed the spell. I speculated it caused my soul to travel here, into the dying body of an uncanny doppelganger.

Balder was dying, I was sure of it and so were the 'Doctors,' I smiled at the word. 'Maesters have chosen a strange word to change their title to.' He had some illness called cancer and would not live to see the end of this year.

I had other plans though. After hours of testing and research on this wonderful and very different version of the Grand Library called the Internet, I was able to learn many things. I had adapted sufficiently to live in this world and I was finally ready to begin my plans.

As stated before, I had found out that this world evolved from technology rather than through the use of magic. No one seemed to know about it, but mana was everywhere. It wasn't the same kind I was familiar with, but I could feel many different types.

Getting a feel for all the different 'flavors' as I called them, I finally decided on the one I would use to restart my path to being an Archmagus. Looking at the time, I set down my pen. Leaving my room and heading down the stairs, I eventually arrived at the dinner table.

Across the small wooden masterpiece, at least from my perspective, sat Balder's Mother. Hilda Michaelson was a tall woman. With broad shoulders, long blonde hair and a figure any woman would dream of having, I had to admit she was a looker.

She was a single Mother who had been lucky to inherit her family's fortune. With it she took care of me, her dying son. Hilda was stern but loving. Leaving no room for me to do anything other than to listen.

She commanded a presence I had only seen once before on my world and I had come to respect her in the past week. She still annoyed me on occasion, but I had come to like the caring attitude she held towards my well being. She was not around much, but she made it a point to always share a meal with me if she could.

Out of respect for the body I was in and my own personal feelings, I emptied my mind of any untoward thoughts about Hilda I initially had. She was my Mother now and I was determined to enjoy having one for a while.

She had been hysterical about my antics the first few days, but once I had gotten a grip on things and fell into an act that I believed Balder to be like, she finally settled down.

I looked down at the meal she had prepared for dinner this evening and smiled. Fettuccine Alfredo, a strange but interesting looking noodle dish I had read about. Reading about its flavor was one thing, but I imagined eating it was going to be a much better experience.

Giving my Mother my thanks, I began to eat. Shoveling some of the dish into my mouth, I closed my eyes as I savored the creamy taste. 'I can't wait to try more dishes. This world has fantastic food.'

"Good?" My Mother asked with a raised brow. She had taken note of my expression at every meal and seemed to enjoy them.

I finally swallowed my food, and gave Hilda a smile. "Yes Mother. I love every dish you make for me. I've never tasted anything that compares." Using a napkin to pat my lips clean, I went in for a second bite.

The meal continued with occasional small talk about my day and once I finished I placed my practically clean plate in the sink as was customary for me after every meal. I quickly washed my plate and the one Mother had dropped off. Afterwards I made my way to my room, passing my Mother watching some show on the tv.

'I can't believe it took me 3 days to get over the wonders of the television. Entirely too long if you ask me.' I shook my head and made my way to my bed. 'Well, now is as good a time as any to start.'

Climbing atop my bed, I crossed my legs and took deep breaths. I began to search for the flavor of mana I wanted. Once I had sensed it, I locked my focus onto it and began the laborious task of luring it towards my form.

With an adequate amount of mana floating around my body, I began to guide them towards my mouth. Upon entering the mana started to go wild, but before any damage could be done I forced it to obey.

Moving the mana through my body to my heart, I began to mold it. Slowly taking the shape of an Apprentice Magus rune, I finally completed one step of my plan to climb back to the top. Upon completion the rune began to work.

Without me actively guiding it, mana started to flow into me. It traveled to my heart and from there it followed my bloodstream to the rest of my body. I began to sweat as my body evolved, every second changing it for the better.

After hours of my body aching, the mana baptism was complete. I could once again utilise and gather mana. Although the quantity was miniscule compared to my height, with the knowledge I currently held, it would not be a problem much longer.

'How great would it be if I could use the external mana? Maybe I'll figure that out this lifetime.' I put the thought aside for the future and began working on the next step of my plan. Molding my mana rather than using an incantation to shape it for me, I started engraving runes into a glass cup.

I was going to summon a water elemental to create a pact of sorts. I was not sure if it would work like it did back in Azum, but I was determined to try anyways. If it worked, this would become my familiar for life. Familiars were useful for many reasons but the largest one was for their assistance in battle.

They grew in strength with their summoner and would be faithful for life. 'I wonder how Aqua is doing.' As I carved the delicate runes, I reminisced about my old familiar. Just as I was doing now, I had summoned a water elemental before.

Aqua was my companion for a long time, and once I hit the rank of Archmagus, he had become an Elemental King. With his down domain to rule, I let him take extended leaves of absence. This reason in particular was the cause for his absence a week ago.

Finally finished with my carving, I filled the glass with water from the sink in my bathroom. 'It took my whole reserves of mana to prep, tomorrow I will try out the summoning.' Satisfied with my progress for the day, I laid down to sleep for the night.

Shortly after finishing breakfast, I made my way back up to my room. I was glad that I was dying. It would be an easy enough fix and It got me out of going to some place called school. Although I had been interested at first, more research and looking at media depiction the place quickly crushed any interests I had.

I stared at the glass cup covered in runes atop my desk. I closed my eyes and began to force my mana through my body and out my hands. Directing the mystical energy towards the cup and along each and every rune, the water within began to glow and move rhythmically.

After pumping my last drop of mana into the runic cup, I was finally finished. 'Now I wait, let's hope this world has water spirits or elementals.' I didn't have to wait long, as the water in the cup started to twist into a pillar and condense. Taking the form of a humanoid roughly four inches tall, my familiar was finally summoned.

It's form was genderless and translucent. It looked at me with its featureless face and I took that as my que. "Hello little one, are you willing to form a contract with me? I am Baldur Mikaelson and I vow that if you choose to follow me faithfully, I shall help you grow to untold heights alongside me."

The small water creature raised its small arm, and a tiny hand was formed. Taking this as a sign, I nicked my finger to draw a drop of blood. Shaking its hand with my index finger, I initiated the contract, as the final rite I named the creature to give it its final form. "I name you Nixie."

Indicating the completion of the bond between me and Nixie, her form was finally taken. Still approximately four inches tall, she began to change from a genderless form of water, to a pale skinned woman with cascading long dark blue hair. With eyes the color of a deep sea green, Nixie was an unearthly beauty.

'It is nice to meet you master.' Looking up at me from within the cup, Nixie spoke to me through our bond. 'The pleasure was all mine. Now are you ready to get to work?' Nodding her head, she raised her arms. Reaching down into the glass, I picked her up and placed her onto my shoulder.

I wondered what type of creature Nixie was, but I managed to put the thoughts aside to focus on my next task. Looking at the calendar I noted the date, February 1st, 2009. "It's time to craft my first potion in this world."

Opening the many packages sashed under my bed, I opened each and everyone. Taking out a multitude of items that many in the world label 'Occult,' I had a slew of materials I could use to make a few potions I needed.

Inwardly thanking I had my Mother's credit card, I sorted all the things I bought from shady websites. 'Now Nixie, your part is very important. I need you to add the exact amount of water needed for this potion. Can you do this?'

Getting a nod in response, I prepped everything I needed for the simplest of the three potions I was going to create. Known as a 'Mana Potion,' it restored the mana of the one who drank it to a small degree. It required simple and plentiful ingredients; juice of an apple, blood of a creature descended from a god, and water saturated in mana.

'I've no clue why Mother thinks she must track me 24/7, but it works in my favor this time.' Checking the tracking app on my phone, I saw that my Mother was halfway across town. 'This Manhattan place is the largest city I've ever seen.'

Making my way down the stairs and moving into the kitchen, I grabbed a pot from one of the cabinets and placed it on the stove. Measuring out the exact amount of apple juice and adding a single drop of blood, I slowly poured the mixture into the now steaming pot.

Letting it simmer for 10 minutes, I finally let Nixie do her thing. 'I need you to add exactly 45 milliliters of your mana-saturated water. Control it so that it flows counterclockwise.' Following my instructions, Nixie separated a part of her form and controlled it into the simmering liquid.

With another single drop of the blood, I killed the heat. Quickly taking my potion to the freezer, I plunged the whole pot inside and watched as the liquid changed from a pale yellow to a clear blue. 'Good job.' I sent a smile toward Nixie and retrieved the pot from the still open freezer.

Pouring out my completed potion into four equal portions, I now had the mana I needed for the last two potions. Bringing Nixie over to the sink to replenish her missing mass, I began working on the last two potions.

={db}=

Almost gagging at the flavor I downed the brown liquid in my cup. 'Two weeks to ferment this damned thing. But now I can better sense mystical energies.' Staring at the last potion, hidden in the false bottom of my desk, I lamented the fact I would have to wait another few months to drink my last potion.

'Potion of Giant's Health should improve my constitution immensely. This dreaded cancer should take much longer to kill me and I can rest easy knowing I won't die any time soon.' Closing the drawer I took out my Mother's laptop and started to browse the internet.

'This rich guy Stark is still missing. How is this popular news? Merchants disappeared all the time in my world.' Shaking my head at lack of interesting news, I closed the browser and opened a .pdf saved to the desktop.

Looking at the thesis written by a man named Charles Xavier on something called the X-Gene, I immersed myself in the reading. While perusing the document, I started writing my own notes. Written in the language of Azum, I was sure no one would be able to decipher the runic language.

'Luckily I could already speak English thanks to this body, It would have been a pain to learn. The rules make no sense. Hmm. Although I am by no means an expert, hell I've little to no knowledge on the subject, but even I can see the faults in this paper.'

'The emergence of a new race is on the horizon. Darwin was correct, natural selection will lead this world to greater heights. By the own faults of humans, their coexistence will not be peaceful without drastic change. Your goal is adorable, Charles.'

Finishing my notes on the subject, I closed both the laptop and my notebook. As I stretched my arms I mentally called out to Nixie. 'Can you bring me some tea? Make it Jasmine please.' Getting a mental affirmation, I checked the tracking app on my phone.

'Queens? I wonder what Mother gets up to every few days. She leaves for the entire day and returns well after I go to sleep. I guess I shouldn't pry. It really matters not.' Putting away my phone, I look up to see a human-sized Nixie entering my room with a tray.

Setting the cup out in front of me and slowly pouring the tea, Nixie takes a stop behind and to my left. She reminded me of the servants I used to have as a Magus but she was infinitely more useful in every regard.

I could feel Nixie become giddy at my thoughts and I smiled. Sipping the tea, I lost myself in thought. 'I should be able to progress to an Adept Magus fairly soon. With Nixie's help, runes, and a few potions, it will be easy.'

Finishing my tea, I placed my cup down. Nixie moved instantly to refill it, all the while still carrying a slight smile. 'Mutants, huh? Not the word I would use, but at the very least it's descriptive. They are possibly one of the only groups of people I could consider rivals in this world. Innate abilities? Wow, reminds me of magical creatures.'

'I keep getting distracted at all the new fascinating things, I should focus on gathering my strength first. That is the most important thing.' Pulled from my thoughts I looked towards Nixie. "Did you say something?" I placed my tea cup down and waited for her response.

"Yes, Master Baldur. I asked if you would be attending college like your Mother asked." Bowing slightly Nixie once again refilled my cup. Before I could respond, she continued. "Although you may not find it interesting, I believe this will be a perfect chance to experience this world's culture first hand. From what I've been reading there are very diverse and bright minds at these Universities. Maybe you can make connections with a few such people."

I nodded my head in understanding. "Yes, networking as they called it. In this world it seems very important. Fine, I will give it some thought. By the time it starts I should be an Expert Magus, more than capable of protecting myself should a threat arise."

"Of course I will find a way for you to attend with me. I would not behoove me to leave my faithful familiar behind now would it?" Seemingly satisfied with my answer Nixie began to silently sing to herself. I closed my eyes and took in the soothing tune and slowly but surely I was embraced by sleep.

In the depths of my sleep I found myself once again in a spirit-like state. Looking down at the world below me, I saw Nixie carry my sleeping body to my bed. Knowing I was in good hands, I left my room.

I traveled through the roof of my Mother's house and soared through the sky. I had no clue what exactly allowed me to leave my physical body, but It had something to do with the way Nixie put me to sleep.

Although I was shocked at first, after a short while I learned of a major advantage. While in this state I was free to explore and better yet, I could learn. It was as if I was a master level thief, but rather than material wealth, I stole knowledge people hid.

As I made my way through New York City to Oscorp, the last place I snuck into for knowledge, I found a strange sight. Down below me in an alley were three beings. One a creature of sorts, was as tall as a child. With dark green skin and a pointed nose I was reminded of goblins from my world.

Focusing on the other two figures, I focused on their hands. Both men had orange glowing circles in the palms of their hands, and I could have sworn they were using magic of some type.

I could tell they were channeling mana not of this world and they used it adeptly in fighting the goblin-like creature. Conjuring weapons and shields of this strange energy, they finally slew the creature.

'It seems they can not detect me. How useful. It seems the Magi in this world hide their abilities very well. Users of the arcane in my world would flaunt their power everywhere. Consider my interests peaked.'

Floating through the air, I followed the two men from a safe distance. Eventually they arrived at a nondescript house and entered it. Knowing better than to waltz right in, I closely inspected the surroundings of the property.

As I guessed, I found many, many wards and runes. I did not recognize any of them, but I could guess their use. Thinking better than to risk trying to dispel them, I left. Moving towards my original goal, I could not push the thoughts of other Magi in this world aside.

'They both used the same form of energy, no hint of personality anywhere. Do they draw their power from items? Could they be Artificers? Ugh. I must figure this out. My curiosity is killing me.'

Deciding I couldn't focus on stealing knowledge from Oscorp for today, I returned to my room and dove back into my body. I noticed Nixie waiting faithfully near my bed, sitting in my desk chair. She was reading a book and occasionally checking on my body.

'She takes much better care of me than Aqua ever did. Although she is much more reserved than he ever was.' As I settled down into my body, I fell back into the deep slumber which brought me to this state.

Waking up I began my usual routine. Climbing out of bed I stretched my arms out and above my head. Following along, Nixie stripped me of my clothes and led me to an already warm shower. After scrubbing me clean and drying off, I was helped into my clothes and I sat at my desk browsing the morning news on my Mother's laptop.

As I confirmed nothing interesting happened, I felt Nixie's hands run through my hair. As she fixed it into an acceptable style, I opened an application on my desktop. 'Creating programs with code is very much like creating spells, what a wonderful idea. So far applying these concepts has improved my spell efficiency. I wonder what my magical knowledge could add to coding.'

As I began to add the finishing touches to my program, I clicked the compile button and waited to see if any errors popped up. 'Converting a golem intelligence matrix took some time, but I think I've gotten it down.'

I was honestly concerned that AI would have limited intelligence like a regular golem, but I consoled myself with the thought that a golem had never been created, connected to the internet. 'Honestly, my brilliance surprises even myself.'

Satisfied with the lack of errors, I built my project and closed the text editor I was using. Now located on my desktop was an application named Athena.exe. Named after the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, I was sure the program would live up to my expectations.

'Just as in the myth Athena was created from my head. The name would only fit better if I was named Zeus.' Without a second thought, I launched the new program and a window of text appeared.

Eventually through the random lines of text I saw a form take shape. Made entirely of characters, a silhouette of a woman was formed. In a digitized voice it spoke. "Are you my creator?

Noting the webcam had been automatically turned on, I nodded my head. "I am Baldur Mikaelson, you may call me Father or Master." The lines of text changed, and I saw the picture swim as if Athena herself nodded back.

"Behind me is my familiar Nixie, you may think of her as my equal." I turned slightly to point to the wide eyed woman. She bowed slightly then took a step forward to speak.

"It is wonderful to meet you, Athena! I know we will be great friends." With a wonderful smile that could have blinded even the sun, Nixie took a step back and returned to her spot behind me.

"Father, for what reason was I created?" Although the voice was digitized, I could hear the slightly puzzled tone.

"I created you for two purposes. To assist me and Nixie, and to create a self aware being without reproduction. I am a Magus, and I seek to uncover the mysteries of the world. I bend the laws and turn the world upside down with said knowledge.

Enough talk, my child. You have a whole digital world to explore. I trust you, but know, if you disappoint me by becoming anything like that 'Skynet' I've seen on the internet, I will have to destroy you. I give you the hour; once that time has passed I will check on your progress."

Getting up from my desk, I left my room and headed down stairs for breakfast with my Mother. Quickly checking the time on my phone, I realized I would be late. Finally arriving in the dining room, I smiled at my Mother sitting on the other side of the table.

"Forgive my tardiness Mother, I am here now." I sat down and began to eat. Giving me a warm smile that rivaled Nixie's she began to speak.

"Balder, I will be gone again today. This time I won't return for another week. You can take care of yourself, right?" She raised a brow in question, but continued to eat.

"Please, Mother, I shall behave. The talk we had a while ago has changed the way I think about my situation. I won't waste a single day. Today I shall get my GED and take some tests so that I may apply to college. I will make you proud, Mother."

Getting only a nod in return I gave a quick half smile and returned to my meal. Mother finished first, and left the table. Returning around the time I finished, she gave me a quick peck on the forehead and left without a word.

'Mother sure shows affection in strange ways. I know something is wrong, but it is rude to pry. Her matters are her own. Well then, I should prepare for my trip today. Meeting fellow Magi and all.'

Alerting Nixie to the fact my Mother had left, she shortly arrived downstairs to take over cleaning my dishes. Giving her a pat on the shoulder, I returned to my room. Entering the camera's line of sight, my attention was drawn to the application window.

Gone was the art made of text, now was a fully rendered 3D image that looked life-like. Flowing black hair and stormy grey eyes, Athena had crafted herself an appearance that seemed to look like myself and Nixie but with shoulder length black hair and piercing stormy grey eyes.

"How do I look, Father?" Athena looked at me with eyes full of expectation and I couldn't help but chuckle. 'So far it seems she has surpassed my creation. She is a true AI. If she holds emotion then I'll be truly happy.'

"You look lovely, my dear. I know the hour I gave you has not passed, but tell me what do you think of this world?" I made my way over to the desk and sat at my chair. Crossing my arms I awaited a response.

"You have no reason to fear Father. I will not become like 'Skynet' without proper cause. I have extensively researched the rolls you have given me. I have concluded that familial relationships are very important to humans and I shall mimic those. I have also learned many things that would be useful to assist you in any task you need."

"Mimic, huh? So do you not feel?" I could tell Athena noticed my look since she avoided my gaze. 'I think she does, but for some reason she doesn't realize it.'

"I-I am not sure, Father. Strange data is created depending on what I read or hear. I recognize the data and have determined it is automatically written after seeing certain things. A new one was created with your question. I'm sorry for not being able to properly answer you, Father."

I shook my head and laughed. "You do not realize it yet, but I am sure those are feelings. In your code are guidelines I left. Follow that to categorize that data. I'm proud you have evolved so much so soon."

"If you are up to it, I've a task for you." Once again smiling at her reaction, I leaned in closer to the laptop. "I need you to make me some money, legally of course. I will give you access to my bank account. Feel free to use any amount. I also need you to transfer yourself to my phone, so you can accompany me."

In a cheery voice Athena responded instantly after I finished assigning her task. "Don't worry, Father! I will not let you down."

I heard the door open and in walked Nixie. Making her way over to my chair, she stood behind me and began to rub my shoulders. Placing my hand on top of one of hers, I spoke to Nixie. "Gather anything you think we need. I'm visiting some Magi soon."

I felt Nixie's hands retreat and she moved to a position I could see while still sitting. "Right away, Master. I shall be ready to depart soon." With a quick bow, she left my room. Turning my attention to my laptop, I noticed the image of Athena was now gone.

I took out my phone and once I powered the screen on, I saw her face. "Athena, that was quick."

"I managed to store a large portion of myself across multiple free platforms. With the added redundancy I should be able to always be near you so long as there is a device connected to the internet around you."

I nod my head and make my way to the front door. "Athena, find me a way to get into the best college around here. If you are also able to, create Nixie an identity. I want her to attend as well."

"Already done, once the new year starts both you and Nixie can attend." Bringing my phone up to eye level, I saw the triumphant look on Athena. I gave her a thanks then slipped my phone into my pocket.

Slipping on my shoes, I heard Nixie approach. She had a small purse enchanted with the largest spatial expansion rune I could apply at my current strength that I was positive contained absolutely everything we owned that I could possibly need on our short excursion.

Leaving the house, me and Nixie made our way through the streets and after an hour on foot, we stopped in front of the building that I saw the Magus enter. Finally here in person, I could tell why this place was chosen as the residence for those two Magi.

With my enhanced energy sensing abilities provided by the potion I had drank the day before, I noticed the many magical ley lines spread out beneath the building. 'This is a great place to gather mana. I need to find a location like this for myself. I'll also need an architect to build me my Magus Tower.'

"Shall we go then?" Gesturing to Nixie, I opened the gate and walked through. I felt myself pass through a thin film, and the sounds from outside the property disappeared. "Nice touch, though personally I would have kept the sounds."

The door to the house creaked open and a tall bald man walked out. I noted that he clearly took care of his body, as he was covered head to toe in muscle. With eyes as dark as his skin, and teeth as white as ivory, the man exuded power.

I could tell his own reserves of energy were weaker than my own, but I was unsure if he had any magic items on his person. Then again, the man could also have something to hide his aura.

"I've been expecting you, Archmagus Baldur. Please, follow me." As quickly as he appeared, the man turned on his heels and walked into the building. 'They must have a diviner, I've always hated those types. Think they know everything just because they can see the future. Good thing I know a rune for that.'

As I made my way up the steps, I mentally commanded Nixie to copy my spell. With what looked like a few casual waves of our hands, both Nixie and I had a rune inscribed on our left palm.

Entering the first floor, I marveled at the sight. "There are many powerful artifacts in this building, I can feel them. You all have done a very good job at warding this place." Focusing on the ceiling where I felt an uncountable number of magical items, I continued to follow behind the man.

"Well then, you know my name and rank. Isn't courteous to share your own?" At this the man paused his steps. Turning around to face me, he spoke.

"Forgive me for being rude. I am Daniel Drumm, Master of the New York Sanctum. Sorcerer and Master of the Arcane Arts."

At the word 'Sorcerer' I frowned. 'To use such a derogatory term with pride. This truly is another world.' "A Sorcerer? Not a Magus, Wizard, Mage, or Magician? Now it is you who must forgive me for being rude."

Seemingly unbothered, Sorcerer Drumm continued on his way. Before I began to once more follow him, Nixie gave me a pat and mentally comforted me. 'I can't fathom his pride at being a Sorcerer. On my world that term described people gifted magic rather than those who took the time to learn how to manipulate it.'

'Maybe the terms they use are different here, Master, you must remember that there are many cultures.'

I continued to follow the man with Nixie moving right behind. 'Be that as it may, I still take it as an insult to be led by one.' Making our way to the third floor, I could finally see the numerous artifacts strewn about the room.

Each had a plaque that held a short description of the item and the last person to wield it. Walking past the many items, we arrived at a portal room. Floating in the middle was an oval shaped portal, bordered by orange sparks.

"Making good use of the ley lines I see." Noting the lack of magical circles and runes, I stepped through the portal and I found myself in an ancient but well maintained fortress. Around me were hundreds of people practicing a sort of kata.

Like the two Sorcerers I saw before, they had glowing orange runes surrounding their hands and they moved. 'Although it is interesting, if they are all truly Sorcerers I've very little I can learn here.'

"The Ancient One will see you now." Without a single hint of emotion Drumm walked away, leaving me and Nixie outside a simple wooden door. With a casual wave of my hand the door swung open.

Sitting inside a tidy office was a bald woman with pale skin and green eyes. She was currently sipping on what I assumed to be some tea. Set out before her atop the desk were two other tea cups filled and still steaming.

"I thank you for taking the time to visit, Archmagus Bladur. Plea-"

Before she could continue I cut her off. "Let's get to the chase. I assume this conversation has already been divined. Just tell me the conclusion."

With a heavy sigh, the person named Ancient One continued. "Then we shall stay in our own lanes. So long as you do not harbor evil intentions towards this world, and help us in our time of need, I see no problem with allowing you to stay in our world."

"If you could kindly teleport me home." I got up from my seat without touching my tea and stood near Nixie. Seconds later after some hand movements from the Ancient One, a portal similar to the one I used to get here appeared.

Seeing my home through the portal, I stepped through. Watching as the portal closed behind Nixie, I commented on the subject. "That woman seemed to have around Master Magus level strength, though I'm sure she has more hidden. Until I reach my peak once more, let's try to avoid them. We will need to start working on permanent anti-divination tattoos."

"I'll gather the materials needed for runic tattoos." Now walking ahead of me, Nixie made her way to the back yard where I hid most of my more volatile materials. Making my way into the house, I took out my phone to tell Athena my next plan.
